Kingdom Hearts is one connected story, not a trilogy confined to its numbered games. Sora’s adventures are the entry point, but games released between the main installments fill in important events and perspectives. For a first playthrough, follow release order; the in-universe chronology is different, and starting with prequels can reveal information the series originally held back.
Spoiler note: This guide explains the series’ structure and starting order without revealing major character identities, reversals, or endings.

What is the Kingdom Hearts story about?
Square Enix describes the series as a collaboration between Square Enix and Disney, directed by Tetsuya Nomura. Its central adventure follows Sora, a young Keyblade wielder, who travels with Donald and Goofy through Disney worlds and fights the Heartless. The official overview frames the conflict as stopping the Heartless and sealing the worlds’ keyholes. Its concise description is: “KINGDOM HEARTS is the story of Light overcoming Darkness with the power of Friendship.” Square Enix’s official series overview gives the basic premise.
That premise expands into an ongoing conflict involving Sora and other Keyblade wielders, with entries that move away from Sora’s immediate journey to show other characters and events. Those stories are not disposable extras: they supply context for later installments. That is why playing only Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Kingdom Hearts III leaves gaps.

What order should I play the Kingdom Hearts games in?
For a first playthrough, use release order. This is an editorial recommendation rather than a play-order rule from Square Enix: it lets you encounter the mysteries and story connections in the sequence players originally did. The order below names the principal releases and groups, rather than claiming to list every regional edition or short-form release.
- Kingdom Hearts (often encountered in the collection as Kingdom Hearts Final Mix)
- Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (included as Re:Chain of Memories)
- Kingdom Hearts II (included as Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix)
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
- Kingdom Hearts coded, followed by Kingdom Hearts Re:coded if you are following the versions represented in the collection
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep (included as Birth by Sleep Final Mix)
- Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (included in HD form in 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue)
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage, also grouped in 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind
The collection’s presentation order is a useful way to navigate its contents, but it is not identical to release order: for example, its 1.5+2.5 grouping presents Re:coded after Birth by Sleep. If your priority is reproducing the original release sequence, keep that distinction in mind. The collection’s contents are listed on Square Enix’s collection page.

How does the in-universe chronology differ?
Chronological order places earlier-era stories before the original Kingdom Hearts, and some entries cover events that happen alongside or between the central Sora games. Release order instead follows when players first received each story. The difference matters because a prequel can explain background that the original sequence deliberately left uncertain.
| Approach | What it means | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | Play stories in the order they were released, preserving the intended sequence of reveals. | Most first-time players. |
| In-universe chronology | Play stories according to when their events occur, which brings prequels and earlier-era material forward. | Returning players who already know the major mysteries. |
There is no single official, text-based complete timeline in the sources cited here that establishes the exact placement of every story segment. Rather than present a supposedly definitive scene-by-scene chronology, use the release route above for a first run and treat the chronological route as a different way to revisit known material.

How do the collections fit the story together?
Square Enix groups the Dark Seeker Saga across three collection components. These bundles are a practical inventory of the story, not a strict chronology or a guarantee that every included entry is presented as a playable remake.
| Collection component | Story coverage | Format detail |
|---|---|---|
| Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX | Six stories, including the first Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, and Re:coded. | 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations, not playable remakes. |
| Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue | Three adventures leading to Kingdom Hearts III: Dream Drop Distance, χ Back Cover, and 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage. | The collection page groups these three stories; consult the edition listing for platform and format details. |
| Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind | The third numbered Sora adventure and its Re Mind addition. | Square Enix describes this installment as bringing one chapter of the series to a close. |
Square Enix calls the arc from the original game through Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind the Dark Seeker Saga. That name refers to this completed story arc, not to every future Kingdom Hearts story. The company’s June 13, 2024 announcement also describes Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind as the culmination of the saga.

Where can you start if you want the connected story in one collection?
The KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] combines HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. It is a convenient way to access the grouped saga, but remember that two stories in the first bundle are cutscene compilations rather than playable remakes.
As listed on Square Enix’s US collection page, physical editions are for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, with October 8, 2026 given as the release date. The page also lists digital collection availability for Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store on Windows. Because that date is one day after this article’s current date, check the official US collection listing for launch status and the edition available for your platform.

How does the series’ release history help explain its structure?
The first Kingdom Hearts released in Japan on March 28, 2002, and made its US debut on September 17, 2002, according to D23’s series entry. Kingdom Hearts III arrived in January 2019. Between and around the numbered games, Square Enix released stories that broadened the cast and filled in earlier or parallel events. The gap between numbered installments is one reason the series’ important story cannot be understood by numbering alone.
