No—Minecraft pumpkins can grow without water. Water is optional, but it hydrates nearby farmland and helps pumpkin stems grow and produce fruit more quickly. For pumpkins to appear, a stem must mature and have a suitable open block beside it.
What water does for pumpkin farming
Pumpkin seeds grow into stems, and pumpkins grow from mature stems into neighboring blocks—not directly on the farmland or on the stem. Water is not a growth requirement; its benefit is that hydrated farmland improves stem growth and fruit production rates, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s pumpkin and melon farming tutorial.
That makes water useful when you want a more productive farm, but it will not make an immature stem bear fruit or compensate for a lack of space or light.
How to place water near a pumpkin farm
For a compact layout, the Minecraft crop-farming tutorial describes a 9×9 farmland plot with a water block in the center. This is a convenient way to hydrate farmland, not a requirement for pumpkin growth. Mojang’s general farmland guidance is to keep planting beds no more than four blocks from water; its article recommends supplying farmland with water as general crop advice, not as a pumpkin-specific rule: Taking Inventory: Farmland.

If your pumpkin stem is not producing fruit
Check the conditions around the stem rather than assuming it needs water:
- Is the stem mature? Only mature stems can grow pumpkins.
- Is there a suitable open block beside it? The pumpkin appears in a neighboring space, so blocked spaces can prevent fruit from appearing.
- Is there enough light? Light is also relevant to growth.
Water may improve production when farmland is hydrated, but it does not replace these other conditions.

Does this differ between Java and Bedrock?
The available sources do not establish a precise Java-versus-Bedrock comparison for pumpkin hydration or growth rates. Microsoft’s Bedrock Editor Farm Tool documentation lists pumpkin as a crop but does not explain its water or growth mechanics, so it does not support a separate edition-specific claim.
