Does Everyone Rage at Video Games?

Many players report anger while gaming, especially around losses or connection problems, but available studies do not show that everyone experiences rage or establish a rate for all gamers.

No. Many players report getting angry while gaming, but the available evidence does not show that everyone does—or establish what share of all gamers experiences rage. Losing, connection problems, perceived unfairness and friction with other players are commonly described triggers, but people react differently.

What does “rage” mean in gaming?

“Rage” is used inconsistently in gaming communities and research, and it is not a clinical diagnosis. A 2025 scale-development paper defines it as “an escalating, aversive emotional reaction, often associated with feelings of anger and irritation,” in response to failures such as losing, malfunctions or other participants’ behavior. That is the study authors’ working definition, not a universal standard. Players also use terms such as “tilt” and “rage quit,” sometimes to describe different experiences.

Anger can be an internal reaction, a change in concentration or decision-making, or an outward behavior. A frustrated player may become irritated, lose focus, snap at someone, or leave a match. Some people describe physical expressions such as hitting a desk or throwing an object, but that is one possible expression—not an inevitable result of being angry.

Why do players get angry at games?

Studies and survey responses point to several situations, rather than one cause. They do not show that every player responds to these events in the same way.

  • Losing or repeated failure: A loss, a difficult challenge or a run of setbacks can be frustrating.
  • Connection problems and malfunctions: Lag or a poor internet connection can make a game feel unpredictable, especially when it affects the outcome.
  • Perceived unfairness or lack of control: Players may become angry when a situation feels unfair or when they cannot influence what happens.
  • Other players: Team conflict, hostile behavior or frustration with another participant can contribute. Research also describes anger as potentially contagious in multiplayer settings.

A 2024 qualitative study based on interviews with 24 gamers aged 18–30 explored how participants described losing control and rage. Its accounts help illustrate what those experiences can look like; they do not measure how common rage is among gamers generally.

How common is gaming anger?

There is no established population-wide figure in the sources reviewed that answers what fraction of all gamers rage. The most readily attributable numbers come from Opera GX’s company-sponsored 2022 survey announcement, covering respondents in the UK and US. They are survey responses, not representative estimates for all gamers in those countries or worldwide.

Survey response UK respondents US respondents
Said they get angry when they lose 65% 69%
Said lag or a poor internet connection makes them irate 85% 83%

These figures describe what respondents said about particular triggers; they do not mean that the same proportion experiences severe rage, acts aggressively or gets angry every time they play. Opera GX’s announcement does not establish that the sample represents all players. Opera GX’s 2022 survey announcement provides the figures and their company-sponsored context.

A separate 2025 study analyzed 267 adult gamers recruited internationally through gaming-related online groups to develop a rage-measurement scale. Its sample is useful for studying how rage might be measured, not for estimating its prevalence among all gamers. The 24-person interview study likewise offers detailed descriptions, not a population rate. The 2025 scale-development paper and the qualitative study record describe those research approaches.

Does getting mad mean a player has a problem?

No. An angry episode, frustration after a loss or quitting a match does not by itself diagnose an anger problem or gaming disorder. The 2025 scale paper explores relationships between gaming rage, emotional dysregulation and problematic gaming, but relationships measured in research do not establish that one causes another or diagnose an individual.

It is also important to distinguish feeling angry from acting aggressively. Some research participants describe verbal outbursts, abruptly quitting or physical expressions of anger; those examples do not mean that ordinary frustration is violence, or that everyone who feels rage will act on it.

What can someone do when a game is making them angry?

Taking a break is one response reported by participants in a 2026 CHI study of frustration in online games. That qualitative work describes experiences and explores tangible interactive devices; it does not establish a universally effective remedy. A 2024 CHI study examines toxicity and coping strategies in online games, including reactions to other players, but does not prove a single best treatment for gaming rage.

If anger is disrupting play or spilling into interactions with other people, stepping away from the match is a practical option to consider. That is not a clinical prescription, and the cited studies do not show it works for everyone. The research on toxicity and participant experiences is available in the 2024 CHI study and the 2026 CHI paper.
