For a flexible general-purpose party, prioritize Sage for magic, Martial Artist for physical offense, Thief for utility, and Monster Wrangler for monster-linked abilities. This is a role-based ranking for recruitable party members—not an official or measured tier list—and the right choice depends on the gaps in your party and where you are in the campaign. The Hero is the protagonist’s fixed vocation, so the ranking below focuses on companions.

Best vocations in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, ranked

The remake lets you choose companions’ vocations, including familiar roles and the new Monster Wrangler. These four are useful priorities for a broad playthrough, but they are not interchangeable: choose according to whether your party needs magic, physical damage, utility, or monster-linked abilities. Game8 offers a similar tier-list perspective, while the order here is an editorial synthesis rather than an official ranking.

  1. Sage: strongest all-purpose spell role

Choose Sage when your party needs broad magical coverage. It is a flexible investment, not an automatic pick for every companion or every stage. Decide whether the party can afford to build around this role rather than treating Sage as a universal upgrade.

  2. Martial Artist: physical offense and critical-hit utility

Martial Artist is a clear option when you need a physical damage dealer. Its balance is version-sensitive: Square Enix’s update notice records an increase to critical hit rates for both Hero and Martial Artist. That change is a reason to avoid relying on launch-era assumptions when comparing the vocation.

    #1 Best Overall
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake (NSW)
    • DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake is a stunning reimagining of the beloved masterpiece and narrative beginning to The Erdrick Trilogy – the first three games of the mainline DRAGON QUEST series. Featuring vibrant HD-2D graphics, new and modernized features, and a refined narrative, players are invited to set out on an epic fantasy adventure to save the world from a dark evil.
    • A fully modernized remake of the original: Stunning HD-2D visuals fuse pixel art with 3D graphics, bringing players into the world of DRAGON QUEST III like never before, along with an improved and modernized UI, and other quality of life improvements.
    • Traditional DRAGON QUEST style battles: A refined take on the classic turn-based battle system, featuring new animations, additional improvements such as an adjustable battle speed, an auto-battle setting, and more.
    • Immersive world: Deep exploration of a vast world map with an abundance of rich and captivating locations to discover, challenging players to overcome many unexpected encounters during the journey.
    • Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the DRAGON QUEST universe.
  3. Thief: utility-oriented choice

Thief offers a distinct utility-focused option. It belongs on the shortlist if you value that role, but the available evidence does not establish it as a universal damage leader. Nintendo confirms Thief is among the game’s vocations.

  4. Monster Wrangler: monster-linked abilities

Monster Wrangler is new to the remake, and Nintendo describes its battle abilities as monstrous abilities. It is a distinctive alternative when its role fits your party plan. Square Enix’s update changed Monster Pile-On, so assess the vocation using the current balance rather than launch impressions.

Square Enix DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake (Xbox Series X)
    • Turn-based combat system and characters with multiple vocations
    • Stunning HD 2D graphics that bring the world to life like never before
    • Explore a big world full of exciting places and unexpected encounters
    • Experience a timeless soundtrack and immerse yourself in the magic of the Dragon Quest universe

How to choose the best class for each party member

Start with what the party lacks, then choose the companion who can fill that role without leaving another essential need uncovered. The available sources do not establish precise endgame damage rankings or exact skill-unlock timing, so the practical comparison is about role coverage rather than a guaranteed strongest character.

Vocation Best fit What to weigh
Sage Broad magical coverage Whether your party needs this flexible spell role
Martial Artist Physical offense Square Enix records an increased critical hit rate in an update
Thief Utility Choose it for its distinct role, not an assumed damage advantage
Monster Wrangler Monster-linked battle abilities Monster Pile-On was changed in an official update

For an easier-to-build team, consider whether you have coverage for healing and offensive magic, a physical damage role, and useful utility. A “best” lineup for convenience may differ from one intended to maximize later damage; the sources here do not support a precise postgame optimization order.

When should you change vocation?

Reclassing is a progression decision, not a rule that applies at one universal level. Game8 recommends level 20 as a general reclass point, but that is guide advice rather than an official requirement or a guarantee that the timing suits every character.

  • Consider the companion’s current vocation and level before changing roles.
  • Make sure the party can cover the role the character will leave behind.
  • Weigh the opportunity cost: changing now may delay the role you need during the current part of the campaign.
  • Choose the new vocation for the job you want the character to do, rather than following a level threshold automatically.

What changed in the current balance?

Official update notes matter when using older vocation advice. Square Enix records an increased critical hit rate for Hero and Martial Artist, and a change to Monster Wrangler’s Monster Pile-On. Those are specific balance changes; they do not, by themselves, establish a complete ranking of every vocation’s damage or performance.

Sources and scope

Nintendo’s official Switch listing identifies the vocation selection system and includes vocations such as Martial Artist and Monster Wrangler. Its release announcement identifies Monster Wrangler and Monster Arena as new remake content. Square Enix’s update notice records the balance changes discussed above. Game8’s class tier list and guide is an editorial comparison and source for the general level-20 reclass recommendation, not official game documentation.
