This is a practical ranking—not a universal build or an objective power tier list. Choose according to how you explore and fight, and note that Heavy Lift belongs to a separate progression branch that is not equally available at the start.
How this ranking works
The order weighs how often a skill can help, how useful it is for its intended playstyle, and whether it adds a distinct option. GamesRadar recommends the first seven picks below; Epic Games documents Power Shot as another combat option. Neither source establishes an objective ranking, so treat the list as a starting point and reorder it for your own approach.

Dying Light: The Beast has four skill branches: Power, Agility, Survival, and Beast. Regular progression provides skill points for Agility, Power, and Survival, while Beast Points come from Chimera progression. That separate gate matters when deciding what to unlock early. Epic Games’ survival guide outlines the branches and progression.
The 8 best skills to consider
1. Active Landing
Best for: exploration and safer drops. Active Landing reduces fall damage, making it a dependable choice for players who use elevated routes or need to descend quickly. GamesRadar calls it essential for getting around, and Epic Games also describes its fall-damage benefit. It is the strongest all-purpose pick in this ranking because it supports movement rather than a narrow combat situation.

- VAST OPEN WORLD: Participate in the life of a city engulfed in a new dark era. Discover different paths and hidden passages, as you explore its multiple levels and locations.
- CREATIVE & BRUTAL COMBAT: Take advantage of your parkour skills to tip the scales of even the most brutal encounter. Clever thinking, traps and creative weapons will be your best friends.
- 2-4 PLAYER CO-OP GAMEPLAY: Play in up to four-player co-op. Host your own games or join others and see how their choices have played out differently than yours.
2. Stealth Expert
Best for: avoiding direct fights and setting up takedowns. Stealth Expert helps with sneaking and delays enemy detection, according to Epic Games and GamesRadar. It suits a cautious approach, especially when slipping past enemies is preferable to spending health and resources on a fight.
3. Flamethrower
Best for: managing groups. This Survival-branch unlock gives access to a craftable weapon that GamesRadar describes as useful for crowd control; Epic lists it among Survival-tree armament unlocks. It offers a different way to handle several enemies than relying only on melee attacks.
4. Dash
Best for: movement and escape. Dash lets you sprint as long as your stamina lasts, making it a natural choice if your priority is moving quickly through danger. It is less valuable if stamina management or a slower, stealthier approach defines your play.
5. Bash
Best for: breaking through a crowd. GamesRadar says Bash lets you charge through enemies without stopping. Its value is most apparent when you are surrounded and need a way through rather than a tool for avoiding the encounter altogether.

6. Heavy Lift
Best for: Beast Mode utility and a ranged attack option. Heavy Lift lets you pick up and throw certain environmental objects, extending Beast Mode beyond close-range attacks. Because it belongs to the Beast branch, unlocking it depends on Beast progression: Chimera defeats award Beast Points.
7. Efficient Fighting
Best for: players who rely on melee weapons. Efficient Fighting improves weapon durability, which makes it a practical maintenance pick for a melee-heavy style. Techland’s combat guide also emphasizes weapon upgrades, mods, and stamina management as parts of combat preparation.
8. Power Shot
Best for: ranged combat. Epic Games describes Power Shot as dealing piercing and bonus damage. It rounds out this shortlist for players who want a combat-focused ranged option; its placement here does not mean the available sources establish it as weaker than the other picks.
Choose by playstyle
| Priority | Skills to consider | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|
| Traversal and safety | Active Landing, Dash | Active Landing helps reduce fall damage; Dash supports sprinting while stamina lasts. |
| Avoiding or managing encounters | Stealth Expert, Flamethrower, Bash | Stealth Expert supports sneaking; Flamethrower and Bash provide different ways to handle groups. |
| Beast Mode options | Heavy Lift | It adds an environmental-object attack, but requires Beast-branch progression. |
| Melee weapon upkeep | Efficient Fighting | It improves weapon durability. |
| Ranged damage | Power Shot | Epic Games says it deals piercing and bonus damage. |
How skill points and later progression work
Epic Games says XP progression increases maximum health and stamina and awards skill points for Agility, Power, and Survival. Beast Mode fills through melee fighting, perfect dodges and parries, and taking damage; defeating Chimeras awards Beast Points for the separate Beast branch. As a result, Beast skills should not be treated as if they were immediately interchangeable with regular skill-tree picks.

The four branches are not the whole progression system. Techland’s Legend Levels support article, modified November 27, 2025, says that once you reach Level 15, earned XP converts into Legend XP. Each Legend Level grants Legend Points for passive upgrades, and the system also adds weapons, outfits, and vehicle skins. Those later rewards are distinct from unlocking the skills ranked above.
Why the skill list is focused
In a GamesRadar interview, Techland designer Nathan Lemaire said the team chose not to reuse Kyle’s abilities from Dying Light simply to make the skill tree larger. He described the goal as an individual experience that felt “very connected and dense.” That gives useful context for approaching the choices: focus on skills that support the way you want to play rather than expecting a huge list of interchangeable upgrades. Read the GamesRadar interview.
Game context
Dying Light: The Beast takes place in Castor Woods, where Kyle Crane scavenges and faces greater danger as night falls. Techland describes a mix of parkour, off-road vehicles, combat, and co-op for up to three other players in its game overview. The game launched on September 18, 2025, according to Techland’s release announcement.
