A brief post-credits glimpse resembles him, but it is a hint rather than proof. The developers deliberately leave his fate open to interpretation.
What happens to Akechi in Persona 5 Royal?
During Royal’s third semester, Akechi is present in the reality shaped by Takuto Maruki. Maruki discusses Akechi’s fate with Joker, but the translated developer interview says Maruki has no concrete proof that Akechi died; his conclusion is based on what he inferred about other people’s cognitions.
In the standard ending where Joker rejects Maruki’s altered reality and returns to the ordinary world, the post-credits sequence briefly shows someone who resembles Akechi outside a train. That image allows a survival interpretation, but it does not establish that the person is Akechi or explain how he might have survived.
What does the post-credits scene mean?
The glimpse is suggestive, not conclusive. The translated interview says the variation with the figure appears when the player meets Akechi confidant requirements. Its conditional presence makes it a deliberate hint for some players, but it still does not settle his fate.

The interview is an English translation of an interview associated with the Japanese Persona 5 Royal Official Complete Guide, hosted on Scribd rather than an official Atlus site. Its wording should be understood as translated remarks, not an official English transcript. Producer Kazuhisa Wada is quoted in that translation as saying, “But in reality no one knows what really happened.”

Not in a way that resolves Akechi’s fate. “True ending” is often used as shorthand for Royal’s ending, but director Daiki Ito’s translated remarks reject the idea that there is one universally correct ending: “There’s no real answer to ‘which is the true ending’ The ending that you as the player reach after the game is the right answer.” Ito also describes a choice between remaining in Maruki’s distorted reality and returning to the ordinary world.

- New characters and confidants
- new story elements with a new semester at shujin Academy
- new story Arc, cutscenes and alternate endings
- new locations to explore
- new gameplay mechanics like the grappling hooknew personasexplore and customize your own personal Thieves Den
That framing fits the ambiguity around Akechi: the ending offers clues, not a definitive yes-or-no answer. Atlus’s Persona 5 Royal product page and launch FAQ provide game and third-semester context, but do not resolve his fate.
