Rockstar calls this a free upgrade for eligible digital owners. An Xbox One physical disc does not grant the digital upgrade path, so check your copy’s format first.
Install the Series X|S version if you own the digital Xbox One game
- On your Xbox, open My Games & Apps.
- Select Full Library, then Owned Games.
- Find Grand Theft Auto Online (Xbox Series X|S) and select Install. Rockstar also lists a web option: search for Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox.com, open the Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S listing, select Install To, and choose your console. Rockstar’s upgrade instructions, last updated June 18, 2026, describe this as a free upgrade for Xbox One digital owners.
- Launch the Series X|S version. If you own the full game, you should be offered a choice between GTA Online and GTA V, which includes Story Mode and GTA Online.
If you own the Xbox One disc
Rockstar explicitly says an Xbox One physical-disc owner cannot upgrade that disc to a digital version. The digital installation steps above do not convert a disc entitlement into a digital copy. Rockstar’s upgrade instructions do not provide a disc-based digital upgrade route.
Transfer your Story Mode save
Installing the new version does not by itself move your Story Mode save. Upload it from the Xbox One game, then download it in the Series X|S game using the same Rockstar Games account. Rockstar’s migration instructions were last updated May 1, 2024.
- On Xbox One, launch GTA V, pause the game, and select Game > Upload Save Game.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account you intend to use, select the save, and wait for the upload confirmation.
- On Xbox Series X|S, launch the game and download the save from the landing page, or use Pause Menu > Game > Download Save Game.
- Only one save per console can be uploaded.
- The uploaded save remains available to download for 90 days. Rockstar says you can update an uploaded save until you download it.
- After downloading, Story Mode progress is saved separately on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Progress made on the old console afterward will not sync to the new one.
Migrate your GTA Online character
Rockstar allows Xbox One players to migrate GTA Online progress to Xbox Series X|S. Migration is limited to the same console family: Xbox progress cannot be transferred to PlayStation, or vice versa. Your console Story Mode and Online character progress is linked to your Xbox Gamertag. Rockstar warns that linking a new account can result in losing that progress, so verify your account connections and use the Gamertag associated with the progress you want to keep before changing linked accounts.

Why the tile says GTA Online
The Series X|S tile may be labelled GTA Online even if you purchased GTA V. Rockstar says that launching the full game should offer a choice between GTA Online and GTA V, which includes Story Mode and GTA Online. If you see only the Online tile, check whether you own the full game or GTA Online standalone; the tile name alone does not establish which entitlement you have.

Rockstar’s support article, last updated November 11, 2025, says GTA Online is required to play GTA V Story Mode on Xbox Series X|S. It also says that if you gained Story Mode access while playing GTA Online during a free-trial campaign or through a subscription such as GTA+ or Game Pass, you may need to purchase GTA Online to resume access to your Story Mode progress.
