Nikoderiko: The Magical World is a colorful mascot platformer built around familiar genre pleasures: varied levels, bosses, collectibles, animal mounts, minecart rides, and local co-op. Reviews generally find it an enjoyable, well-made homage, though some critics say it leans heavily on its inspirations. The most specific platform warning in the reviews covered here concerns the 2024 Nintendo Switch version, where Nintendo Life reported inconsistent performance, long loads, and bugs.
What kind of game is Nikoderiko: The Magical World?
It is a 2.5D platform adventure starring Niko and Luna, with some classic 3D sections. The official descriptions outline eight worlds containing boss fights, minecart and underwater stages, collectibles, and animal mounts. It can be played alone or in local couch co-op.
The Director’s Cut adds new levels, more treasures, and Hard Mode. Nintendo says progress from the original game carries over. Nintendo and Steam also describe Easy, Normal, and Hard options and challenge modifiers; check the current platform listing for the exact options available in a particular edition.
What did critics think?
Nintendo Life’s Switch review
Mitch Vogel’s review of the North American Nintendo Switch version, published October 21, 2024, scored the game 7.1/10. Vogel called it an enjoyable and challenging adventure, while noting how clearly it draws from established platformers. The review’s verdict was that it does not surpass those inspirations, but remains worth considering for fans of the genre. Read the Nintendo Life review.

Nintendo Life also reported inconsistent performance around 30fps, some level loads lasting as long as 40 seconds, and bugs, including a softlock, in the version it reviewed. These are observations from that 2024 review, not a current test of every platform or proof that the issues persist in later builds.
Other critical perspectives
PS5 review excerpts collected by Metacritic similarly praise the level design and fun while noting the game’s obvious influences and occasional sense of derivativeness. GameSpew’s excerpt describes the levels as joyful and recommends the game to platformer fans; Gamingbible’s points of distinction include the mount system and boss fights. These are the outlets’ opinions, not independently measured qualities. See the Metacritic critic-review collection.

Steam player reviews
On October 8, 2026, Steam labeled the Director’s Cut reviews “Very Positive” and showed 82% positive from 346 user reviews. That is a dated, changing snapshot of PC user reviews, not a critic score or a cross-platform consensus. Check the Steam listing for the current review snapshot.
What does the Director’s Cut include?
Nintendo’s US listing and Steam’s PC listing describe eight worlds, added levels, more treasures, and Hard Mode. Nintendo’s listing also says players can carry over progress from the original game. Is Nikoderiko: The Magical World worth playing?
It is a stronger fit for players who enjoy classic mascot-platformer conventions than for those looking for a radically original take on the genre. The reviews covered here praise its level design, fun, and challenge, while the recurring reservation is how plainly it wears its influences. Local co-op, mounts, and varied stage types give the adventure additional points of interest, but they do not erase that familiar feel.
