For a budget-friendly Switch game, start with the kind of play you want—not a single “best” pick. Stuff’s August 24, 2025 list defines cheap as $20 or less in the US and £17 or less in the UK; its choices span narrative adventures, platformers, strategy, and relaxed exploration. Those are editorial price thresholds, not a guarantee that a game is still listed at that price today. Check the current price and edition in your region before buying.
Here are 27 candidates, with the likely appeal and any access caveats the cited guides identify. The list combines Stuff’s recommendations with games named in Nintendo Life’s and Siliconera’s 2025 budget guides.

How to shop for cheap Switch games
Compare the regular price with a temporary sale price: a low list price and a sale bargain are different kinds of value. Nintendo’s US Store has categories for Games $19.99 and under and Games $4.99 and under, as well as a separate sales and deals page. These are dynamic listings, not promises that a particular game is available at a particular price.
The thresholds in budget guides also vary by market. Stuff’s 2025 selection uses $20/£17 or less, while Nintendo Life’s separate guide uses under $20 in the US and under £20 in the UK. Don’t convert one threshold into the other or assume a game’s price is identical across storefronts.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Digital storefront prices and physical copies are not interchangeable. Nintendo’s budget categories are for digital games; Siliconera points to Amazon and other US retailers as places to look for physical Switch titles. Check that the listing matches the game and edition you want, and confirm current stock and price.
Best cheap Switch games by what you want to play
Narrative adventure: Oxenfree
A supernatural story set on a mysterious island, Oxenfree centers on dialogue, a radio, and time loops. It’s a natural pick if you want a story-led outing rather than a reflex-heavy challenge.
Classic-style platforming: Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania takes its visual style, gameplay, and level design from classic 16-bit Sonic. Choose it for fast, familiar platforming rather than a new direction for the series.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Arcade sports: Rocket League
Rocket League turns soccer into car-based arcade action and includes online modes. Stuff notes that the Switch version’s visuals are reduced compared with other platforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBoss-fight challenge: Cuphead
Cuphead pairs a 1930s-cartoon-inspired look with boss-focused action. Its high difficulty is central to the appeal, but it can be a poor fit for casual players or families looking for an easygoing game.
Farming and relationships: Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a slower farming simulation with relationships, treasure hunting, and activities beyond the farm. It suits players who want a longer-running routine instead of a game built around constant action.
Rank #3
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
Battle royale puzzling: Tetris 99
Tetris 99 pits 99 players against one another in a battle-style take on Tetris. Stuff describes the core game as included with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and offline modes as paid DLC; verify the current access terms before counting it as a free game.
Turn-based tactics: Into the Breach
In Into the Breach, you respond to enemy moves that are visible before they happen. That makes it a strong match for players who prefer planning and tactical decisions over quick reactions.
Exploration and action: Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight is a challenging action platformer built around exploring interconnected underground areas. Expect exploration and demanding play, not a low-pressure stroll.
Rank #4
- Journey through space in two Super Mario adventures, now improved for the Nintendo Switch system!
- Travel the stars with enhanced resolution, improved UI, and additional content
- Learn more about the Lumas from additional Storybook chapters, groove to a bit of additional music
- Get additional Health and fall recovery in Assist Mode
- Join Rosalina and the Lumas to restore the Comet Observatory and rescue Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy.
Relaxed exploration: A Short Hike
A Short Hike is a compact, relaxed exploration game. Optional diversions can make the outing last longer than its main journey, so “short” describes the central trip rather than every possible activity.
Compact, demanding action: Downwell
Downwell is a concise action pick highlighted in Nintendo Life’s March 2025 guide, which gave it a 9/10 review score. That guide listed a $2.99 US eShop price and a $0.99 lowest-ever price at the time; these are historical reference points, not verified current prices.
Local co-op survival: Vampire Survivors
Nintendo Life’s March 2025 guide describes Vampire Survivors as offering local co-op. It listed a $4.99 US eShop price and a $3.99 lowest-ever price at publication, neither of which should be treated as current without checking the store.
Best Value
- Become the Hero of Time and save Hyrule from darkness
- Venture into dungeons, solve puzzles, and travel across time in two different eras to restore balance to the land
- A classic tale, reborn for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, featuring voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, visuals built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2, and more
- Play Link’s in-game ocarina by humming or singing into the Nintendo Switch 2 system microphone
More games to look for under $10
Siliconera’s February 24, 2025 guide named these as under-$10 candidates. Those are publication-date examples, not current price confirmations; check the exact regional listing and edition.
- Starlink: Battle for Atlas (game only)
- Among Us
- Cris Tales
- Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
- Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
- Shovel Knight Showdown
- House Mansion Flipper
- Human: Fall Flat
- Arcade Archives: Vs. Super Mario Bros.
- Poppy Playtime
Free-to-start can still have conditions
Stuff describes Fortnite’s core game as free, with optional cosmetic purchases. “Free” does not mean every related item or purchase is included, so check the game’s current listing and in-game terms. Tetris 99 has a different condition: the cited guide describes access as tied to Nintendo Switch Online, with offline modes sold as paid DLC.
Quick Recap
Check these details before you buy
- Price and region: Confirm the price in your country’s storefront. A US dollar figure or UK pound threshold does not establish the price elsewhere.
- Sale versus regular price: Nintendo Life records lowest-ever sale prices in its guide, but a historical low does not mean the game is on sale now.
- Edition and format: Match the digital or physical listing to the version you intend to buy; availability and price can differ.
- Access requirements: For games described as subscription-dependent or offering paid DLC, check the official current listing for the terms that apply to you.
- Play style: Use the descriptions above to narrow by challenge and genre. The cited guides do not establish a complete, current account of play modes, age ratings, or subscription requirements for every game.
