Zote the Mighty is a boastful, often inept knight in Hollow Knight who works as both a non-player character and a boss. He claims great renown, but the game repeatedly shows him trapped, rescued, or taking credit he has not earned. Whether he reappears, and in what form, depends largely on what the Knight does when they first meet him.
Who Zote is
Zote is introduced in the game’s Hunter’s Journal as “A self-proclaimed Knight, of no renown.” The entry is the most direct way the game tells you that his self-image is not shared by anyone else. He fights with a nail carved from shellwood, which he calls “Life Ender,” and he talks about it as if it were a legendary weapon.
The joke of the character is the gap between that boast and what happens on screen. He announces his strength and fame, then ends up in situations that undercut the claim. Players who expect a hero find a knight who needs rescuing more often than he rescues anyone. His shellwood nail also does no damage in his boss encounter, which turns his signature weapon into part of the gag.
Where to find Zote and what your choices change
Zote’s storyline branches around a single decision: the Knight can save him or leave him behind. Rescuing him at key points opens further encounters in Dirtmouth and the Colosseum of Fools. Greenpath: the first meeting
Greenpath is where most players first meet him. Zote introduces himself with a challenge, and the choice to save or abandon him is the first point at which the game tracks what kind of Knight you are being. If you leave him, the story does not simply end; his later appearances are tied to that path.
Deepnest and the Colosseum of Fools
Saving Zote in Deepnest sends his story toward the Colosseum of Fools. There he is the final boss of the arena’s first trial, so the character who could not win a fight in one place becomes the test at the end of another.

Dirtmouth and Bretta’s storyline
After the Colosseum and Bretta’s rescue, Zote returns to Dirtmouth. His dialogue there changes tone, and he recites the Fifty Seven Precepts, a set of rules for his own conduct. The Grey Prince Zote encounter is a dream-boss version of the character reached through Bretta’s storyline, and it is a separate fight from the Colosseum.

These are Zote’s in-game lines as transcribed by the Hollow Knight Wiki. They are dialogue from a fictional character, not statements by a real person, so attribute them to Zote and cite the scene in which they appear.

Is Zote in Silksong?
Team Cherry’s announcement, Hollow Knight: Silksong Revealed!, describes Hollow Knight: Silksong as the full-scale sequel to Hollow Knight, following Hornet’s adventure in a new land. That announcement does not say whether Zote appears in the game. Until a direct official source confirms a character appearance, treat any claim about Zote in Silksong as unconfirmed. Fan questions on the topic, such as “Who would you like to see in Silksong?”, reflect community interest and say nothing about canon.
Zote merchandise: what to check first
A Zote T-shirt is listed in the Hollow Knight Store’s Shop By Characters section. Before buying or linking to any Zote product, check three things:
- Whether it is official or permitted. Team Cherry’s official FAQ says the company does not license private businesses to sell merchandise based on its properties, and it sets restrictions on fan merchandise. It also says official partnered merchandise uses the trademarked names to distinguish it as official.
- Current stock and seller identity. A listing can change or disappear, and the seller behind a marketplace page may not be the store that Team Cherry partners with.
- What the item depicts. Confirm that the product actually shows Zote before assuming it is a licensed character item.
The official game and soundtrack listings for Team Cherry titles are on Steam’s Team Cherry developer catalog. Those listings cover the games themselves, not character apparel.
