Rockstar’s “Unknown error FFFFFFFF” guidance is specifically for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC: it points to possible audio-device, graphics-driver, or graphics-setting causes—not a server outage. Rockstar’s status page listed Red Dead Online as operational on PC, PS4, and Xbox One at 8:24 PM UTC on October 8, 2026; that is a dated snapshot, not a live guarantee.
Is Red Dead Online down, or is your game crashing?
Check Rockstar’s Service Status page first if you suspect server issues. In its October 8, 2026 snapshot at 8:24 PM UTC, Red Dead Online was marked operational on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The snapshot does not establish the current status at another time or cover platforms not listed there.

If the game closes and shows “Unknown error FFFFFFFF,” Rockstar’s troubleshooting article treats that as a PC issue with possible local causes. If the game stays open but loses its session, reports a timeout, or says Rockstar services are unavailable, use the separate connection troubleshooting steps below. A service marked Up does not rule out a player-specific network problem.
Fixing the FFFFFFFF error on PC
Rockstar Games Customer Support says, “Error Code FFFFFFFF can be caused by some external audio devices, out-of-date graphics drivers, or a misconfigured Advanced Graphics setting.” The article was last updated July 26, 2024, and covers Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. Treat these as recommended checks, not guaranteed fixes for every report described as “FFFFF.”
#1 Best Overall
- Get exclusive access to a bank robbery mission
- A collection of exclusive story mode boosts, bonuses and discounts
- Get three weapons Free at gunsmiths
- Try launching without external audio devices connected. Start the game first, then plug in headphones or speakers. This is a reversible check for the audio-device possibility Rockstar identifies.
- Update the graphics driver already installed. Check the official NVIDIA or AMD support/download page for your GPU and install the current driver intended for it. Avoid third-party driver-updater downloads.
- Switch the graphics API. Close the game and open
Documents/Rockstar Games/Red Dead Redemption 2/Settings/system.xml. Change the API from Vulkan to DirectX 12 or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan, save the file, and close it. - Clear the relevant cache after changing API. In that same Settings folder, delete files whose names begin with
sga_, if any are present, then launch the game again.
Rockstar’s full steps and driver links are in its Red Dead Redemption 2 Error Code FFFFFFFF support article. These instructions are PC-specific; they do not provide console troubleshooting for this error.
Connection errors and Red Dead Online server issues on PC
For “Saving failed,” “Connection to the session lost due to an unknown network error,” “Timed out locating session,” or “Rockstar Games Services are unavailable,” follow Rockstar’s Red Dead Online PC Connection Troubleshooting guide, last updated July 1, 2025. Rockstar recommends checking both your internet connection and the live service status. If status is Up, the guide says conflicting connection types with other players or another network configuration issue may still be involved.

Check the connection and network setup
- Test your internet connection and, if Wi-Fi is unreliable, try a wired connection.
- Rockstar’s published targets are 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload, and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. These are the support guide’s connection guidance, not a guarantee that meeting them resolves every session error.
- Rockstar lists UDP ports 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458. Router or firewall port changes affect your network setup; only make them if you are comfortable doing so.
- The guide suggests trying a DNS change, with Google Public DNS as its example, and unplugging the router for about 10 minutes before reconnecting. These are general connection troubleshooting options, not specific fixes for FFFFFFFF.
When to contact Rockstar Support
If the relevant steps do not resolve the issue, contact Rockstar Support. Include your platform, the exact error text, and whether the game closes or only disconnects; those details distinguish the PC FFFFFFFF crash guidance from the connection-error path. Rockstar’s feedback page directs crash and technical issue reports to support.
