It offers both a graphical interface and a command-line interface, with features for move evaluation, rollouts, match review, and Tutor Mode.
What is GNU Backgammon?
GNU Backgammon is a backgammon opponent and analysis program that can work with individual positions, money-game sessions, and tournament matches. It can evaluate positions and run rollouts, making it useful for studying decisions after a game as well as for playing.
You can use its GTK graphical interface to view a graphical board, or use the command-line interface, which can display a text board. The GNU Project describes it as a “world class opponent” and says it is rated “over 2000 on FIBS.” That is the project’s own undated rating claim on a page marked updated April 29, 2024, not a current independent benchmark.
What can you do with it?
Play against the program
GNU Backgammon supports graphical and command-line play. Its functions cover money games and tournament matches as well as position-level play.

Review moves and cube decisions
For post-game study, the manual describes automatic and manual annotation, evaluation of checker moves and doubling-cube decisions, and position rollouts. Tutor Mode can analyze moves and/or cube decisions and compare your choices with GNU Backgammon’s recommendations. Treat those recommendations as engine analysis, not a guarantee of the best practical choice in every real-world situation.
Work with saved games and matches
The manual describes importing and exporting several established game and match formats, so you can use the program to review records as well as play new games. The available formats and exact controls may depend on the installed version.

Where do you get GNU Backgammon?
The GNU Project page, whose update marker is April 29, 2024, lists the 1.08.003 source archive, gnubg-release-1.08.003-sources.tar.gz, and a Windows installer named gnubg-1_08_003-20240428-setup.exe. It also says the program is usually available as a Linux distribution package and is included in BSD and macOS ports repositories. See the GNU Backgammon project page for its download and platform information. The cited page documents artifacts from 2024; it does not establish whether a newer release has appeared elsewhere since then.
The project page also offers anonymous Git access. It describes the head of the master branch as “generally stable, but less tested than the tagged released versions.” For most users, a tagged release or a package from their platform’s repository is the more conservative choice.

How do you install it?
Installation depends on your operating system and whether you are using a packaged build or compiling from source.
- Windows: The project page lists the 1.08.003 installer. The manual says Windows installations include the necessary software, but that manual is older and may not describe every current build.
- GNU/Linux: Check your distribution’s package manager. The manual says package managers handle prerequisites; confirm details for your distribution and package.
- macOS: The project page points to macOS ports repositories. The older manual says XQuartz is required, so check the instructions for the specific port or build you install.
- Build from source on POSIX: The project page says a reasonably recent POSIX environment should work and names GLib 2.8 or later as mandatory. Optional features may require additional dependencies.
How much does GNU Backgammon cost?
GNU Backgammon is free software and is downloadable without charge. The manual explains that “free software” refers to freedoms to inspect, change, and distribute the software under its license; it does not mean the program is in the public domain. Read the GNU Backgammon Manual V1.00.0 for the manual’s explanation of the project’s free-software status.

Use the manual to understand the program’s features, but verify menu names and steps against the interface you have installed.
