A gaming platform is the hardware and software environment a game runs on or is accessed through. Depending on context, the term can mean the device itself (a PC, console, phone, or handheld), or the wider system around it, including the operating system, the storefront where games are bought, the online account and social services, and in some cases a cloud service that streams games to you. Most confusion comes from mixing those senses together, so this guide separates them before comparing options.

Two meanings of “gaming platform”

The term is used in two related ways, and it helps to know which one a article or product page means.

  • The hardware category. This is the kind of device you play on: PC, console, mobile, or handheld. Epic Games’ Fortnite glossary defines a platform as “a system that runs software on different kinds of hardware,” and gives examples such as desktops and laptops running Windows or macOS, phones and tablets, and handheld devices or consoles.
  • The wider ecosystem. This includes the storefront, account, library, friends list, subscription, and sometimes a streaming service tied to that device. A PC, for example, can be used with several different storefronts, so the “platform” for a given game is not always just the machine.

When someone asks whether a game is available on a platform, they usually mean the first sense. When they ask which platform to buy into, they are often really asking about the second.

The main device categories

Everyday explanations typically sort gaming devices into four groups. The European Commission, in a merger decision document, describes PC, console, and mobile as the three main gaming devices; handhelds are often treated as a fourth category because they combine console-style hardware with portable use.

Category What it is Typical examples named in the sources Points to check
PC Desktop or laptop running Windows or macOS Windows and macOS machines, per Epic’s glossary Hardware requirements, operating system, and which storefronts you use
Console A dedicated device for playing games Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo, per Epic’s documentation Console generation and store ecosystem, since games are usually bought within one brand
Mobile Phones and tablets Traditional mobile devices, per Epic’s glossary Operating system and whether a title is offered on your app store
Handheld Portable device with built-in screen and controls Named alongside consoles in Epic’s glossary Whether a game supports handheld resolution and controls

A console is a device category, not a brand. Epic’s documentation states that “a console is a type of device you can play games on.” Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo are the brands that make consoles, and each has its own store and account system.

Storefronts and services around the device

A storefront is where games are purchased and downloaded. Storefronts are part of the platform ecosystem, and they often determine which version of a game you can get and how your library is organized.

PC storefronts

The European Commission document names Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store as PC storefront examples. Microsoft’s Windows overview, dated May 20, 2026, describes accessing PC games through Xbox/Game Pass, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, and presents its PC app as a hub for installed games and libraries. Microsoft also notes that catalog, feature, plan, platform, and regional availability can vary, so a title in one store may not be in another.

Console stores

The same European Commission document lists the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo eShop as console stores. On a console, the store, the account, and the online service are usually linked, so switching brands generally means buying games again.

Subscriptions and libraries

Subscription services and launcher apps can organize installed games and offer access to catalogs, but they do not change what a game physically requires to run. Check whether a subscription grants ongoing access or only temporary access to a title.

Cloud gaming: a different delivery method

Cloud gaming is a delivery method, not a device. A supported game runs on remote servers and is streamed to your screen, so it does not need to be downloaded and run entirely on your local hardware. That changes what matters: the strength of your internet connection and whether your device and region are supported become as important as your hardware.

PlayStation’s cloud-streaming page, as it stood when this guide was prepared, describes a selection of supported games that can be played without downloading them. It states a minimum upload and download connection of 5 Mbps and requires PlayStation Plus Premium for the PS5 service it describes. These figures belong to that one service. Other cloud platforms set their own requirements, and PlayStation’s figures can change, so confirm them on the service’s current page before relying on them.

How to confirm a game runs on a given platform

Platform support is set per title, not per platform. A game available on PC may not be available on your console, and a console version may differ from the PC version. Before buying or setting up, check the game’s own store page:

  1. Open the game’s page in the store you plan to buy from (for example, the Steam, Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, or Nintendo eShop listing).
  2. Find the platform field on the store page. It lists the systems the specific game supports.
  3. Read the system requirements for PC titles, or the stated hardware and connection requirements for cloud titles.
  4. If you use cloud streaming, confirm the game appears in that service’s supported list for your device and region.
  5. Check whether the game requires a paid membership for online play or for the particular service you are using.

Epic’s support documentation says that the platform field and system requirements on a game’s store page indicate what that specific game supports, which makes this the most reliable first check.

Choosing a platform

No source establishes a single best platform, because the right choice depends on what you want to play. A practical comparison runs in this order:

  • The specific games you want, and which platforms those games support.
  • Devices you already own, since a PC you use for other work may cost nothing extra to game on.
  • Storefront and subscription access, including whether a title you want is in a catalog you can reach.
  • Multiplayer and social features that matter to the people you play with.
  • Whether cloud streaming suits you, which depends on your connection speed, the supported game list, and your region.

If the platform you want depends on a particular title, that title’s store page should settle the question before any hardware is bought.
