The hero’s personal name is chosen by the player, so any name you see in fan material or promotional art is not part of the official story.
Why the protagonist has no fixed personal name
Bethesda Softworks treats the Dragonborn as the player’s own character. Its official Skyrim description frames the protagonist this way: the player takes up the mantle of the Dragonborn and creates a hero whose journey belongs to them. The page covers choosing a race and tailoring the character, but it does not supply a personal name for the protagonist. (Bethesda Softworks, “Welcome to Skyrim,” July 7, 2025)
In that announcement, Bethesda puts it directly: “Your hero’s story is yours to tell, and you can build your character to suit your playstyle.”
What “Dovahkiin” and “Dragonborn” mean
The two names people use for the hero are both designations, not names. “Dragonborn” describes the character’s role: a person with the dragon soul who can absorb the power of defeated dragons. “Dovahkiin” is the same idea in the Dragon language.

Bethesda’s 2021 article on the game’s Dragon language describes the role this way: “The player takes on the role as the Dovahkiin, a legendary warrior whose name means ‘Dragonborn’ in the language of Skyrim’s ancient, powerful race of Dragons.” (Bethesda Softworks, “How Bethesda Game Studios made Skyrim’s Dragon language,” August 19, 2021) The article gives a translation of the word, not a first name.
Where the name comes from
Skyrim’s character creation lets the player set the hero’s race, appearance and build, and the character’s name is entered by the player as well. Whatever name you choose is your character’s name in your playthrough. Other characters in the game address the hero by the title Dragonborn or Dovahkiin rather than by a set personal name.

What to do if you see a “real name” claim
- Check whether the source is an official Bethesda page. Official material as of the sources reviewed (2021 and 2025) describes the role and does not give a personal name.
- Treat fan-created names, community nicknames and promotional depictions as interpretations, not canon.
- If a site claims a specific name appears in the game’s text, look for the line in the game itself before accepting it.
