Vax’ildan Vessar—usually called Vax—was an Assassin rogue in Critical Role’s first campaign. He was a half-elf played by Liam O’Brien and a member of Vox Machina. “Assassin” is his rogue subclass; it does not describe every class he later took in the tabletop campaign.
What does “Assassin rogue” mean for Vax?
Critical Role’s official Campaign 1 character listing identifies Vax’s class as Assassin and his race as half-elf. In the story, his thief abilities made him a natural choice to check for traps and neutralize threats before they became a problem.
That gives Vax a scout-like, trap-aware role in the party, but “scout” is a plain-language description, not his subclass name. Critical Role’s character descriptions also emphasize his loyalty and willingness to put himself in danger to protect his friends, especially his twin sister, Vex’ahlia.
Was Vax only a rogue?
No. Assassin is the answer to what kind of rogue he was, but it is not a complete description of his later tabletop character build. The official character material also frames him as a divine warrior of the Matron of Ravens. A secondary reference, the Critical Role Wiki entry for Vax’ildan Vessar, details his later paladin and druid levels, including a druid level taken before his death. Those multiclass levels supplement his rogue identity rather than changing his Assassin subclass.

Does this answer apply to the animated series too?
The answer here is about Vax’s tabletop campaign class label. Critical Role’s streamed campaign and its animated adaptation are distinct versions of the story, so the tabletop character sheet should not be assumed to map directly onto every screen portrayal.
Where can you read about the rogue rules?
For a fifth-edition rules introduction, Critical Role’s Rogue quick-build is part of its Player’s Handbook tutorial series. It provides general class context; it is not a substitute for Vax’s specific campaign history.
