You usually do not need to download DirectX 11 separately. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the DirectX components they support, and Microsoft delivers updates for the core runtime through Windows Update. If a game reports a missing file such as d3dx11_43.dll or xinput1_3.dll, install Microsoft’s separate DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer instead. It supplies older, side-by-side libraries; it is not a DirectX 11 upgrade.
Do Windows 11 and Windows 10 already have DirectX 11?
DirectX is a collection of Windows technologies for graphics, audio, input, and multimedia—not a normal application that you install once. Modern Windows versions can contain multiple DirectX technologies at the same time.
Microsoft lists Windows 10 as including DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12, with updates delivered through Windows Update. Microsoft’s current guidance likewise says Windows 10 and Windows 11 receive the latest DirectX version available for that Windows release through Windows Update. See Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance.
Therefore, seeing DirectX 12 in dxdiag does not mean Direct3D 11 is missing. Games can use different DirectX APIs on the same Windows installation.

Check your DirectX version with DxDiag
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - If Windows asks whether to check digitally signed drivers, select Yes.
- On the System tab, find DirectX Version under System Information.
- Open the Display or Render tab to inspect Feature Levels, Driver Model, and graphics-device information.
- Select Save All Information… if a support team or game developer requests a diagnostic report.
Microsoft specifically recommends dxdiag for checking the installed DirectX version. Its instructions are available in Microsoft Support’s DxDiag guide.
Update DirectX through Windows Update
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available quality and cumulative updates. Review optional driver updates when appropriate.
- Restart the PC.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Labels can vary slightly by Windows edition and build, but Windows Update is the supported route for the core DirectX runtime. Do not search for a third-party “latest DirectX 11” installer.
When to download the DirectX End-User Runtime
Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer when a specific older game or application needs legacy libraries that are not included in the normal modern Windows installation.
Typical errors name files such as:
d3dx9_43.dlld3dx10_43.dlld3dx11_43.dllxinput1_3.dllxaudio2_7.dllxactengine*.dll
Microsoft’s package supplies older side-by-side SDK components including D3DX9, D3DX10, D3DX11, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1. It does not replace Windows’ Direct3D runtime or change the DirectX version shown in DxDiag.

The Download Center currently identifies the web installer as dxwebsetup.exe, version 9.29.1974.1, with a listed publication date of July 15, 2024. That is the installer package’s metadata—not the version of DirectX 11.
Install the legacy runtime
- Open Microsoft’s official Download Center page.
- Select Download.
- Save or run
dxwebsetup.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- Allow the installer to download and install the required components.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the game again.
The web installer needs an internet connection during setup. Microsoft also provides an offline DirectX End-User Runtimes package through the same Download Center ecosystem for computers that cannot use the web installer; check the current Microsoft page for the available offline download and filename.

DirectX versions versus GPU feature levels
“DirectX 11” and a GPU’s feature level are not interchangeable. A feature level describes a defined set of hardware functionality. Microsoft documents that hardware supporting DirectX 12 can also expose lower feature levels, including 11_0, but the exact levels depend on the GPU and driver.
Feature-level support indicates functionality, not performance. A system may support a required feature level but still deliver poor frame rates, or fail because its driver, rendering mode, or hardware does not meet the game’s requirements. See Microsoft Learn’s explanation of Direct3D hardware feature levels.

Fix DirectX 11 errors that remain
If DxDiag reports the expected DirectX version but the game still fails, work through these steps:
- Install Windows updates: complete pending updates and restart.
- Update the graphics driver: obtain the correct driver from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the computer manufacturer. DirectX updates do not necessarily update the GPU driver.
- Check requirements: compare the game’s minimum GPU, feature-level, operating-system, and driver requirements with your system.
- Repair game files: use the launcher’s verify, repair, or file-validation function.
- Install legacy components: use the Microsoft runtime if the error names a D3DX, XInput, XAudio, or XACT file.
- Use the game’s prerequisites: if the installation folder includes an official redistributable installer, run that instead of copying individual DLLs.
- Try the correct rendering mode: some games provide Direct3D 11 or Direct3D 12 launch options or configuration settings.
- Repair the game installation: reinstall if its prerequisite files or game files are damaged.
If Windows Update does not help, investigate whether Device Manager reports a problem with the display adapter, whether the game is using integrated graphics instead of a discrete GPU, or whether it is running through Remote Desktop, a virtual machine, or compatibility software. Security software may also have blocked a prerequisite installer. These are possible causes, not universal diagnoses.
Do not download individual DLL files
Avoid third-party “DirectX 11 latest version” sites, individual DLL repositories, unofficial driver-updater utilities, registry cleaners, and products claiming to repair DirectX automatically. A manually downloaded DLL can be mismatched, modified, incomplete, or unsafe.
Install the complete prerequisite package from the game publisher or Microsoft instead. Do not manually replace Windows DirectX files.

Can you downgrade from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11?
Generally, no—and you should not try to uninstall DirectX 12 or overwrite Windows system files. Core DirectX components are integrated into Windows, and Microsoft does not provide a conventional uninstall-and-reinstall path for the core runtime.
If a game requires Direct3D 11, determine whether the GPU exposes the necessary feature level, update the driver, repair the game, and install the legacy runtime only if the error identifies missing legacy libraries.

Is DirectX 11 free?
Yes. DirectX components are included with Windows, and Microsoft’s legacy End-User Runtime is available free from the Microsoft Download Center.
Do I need DirectX 11 if I have DirectX 12?
Usually not as a separate download. Windows can contain multiple DirectX technologies, and a DirectX 12 entry in DxDiag does not automatically exclude Direct3D 11 support.

How do I fix d3dx11_43.dll?
Install pending Windows Updates, then install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime or the game’s official prerequisite package. Do not download the DLL by itself from a third-party site.
What does the June 2010 DirectX runtime do?
It refers to the legacy DirectX End-User Runtimes package used by some older games. It adds side-by-side libraries and does not upgrade the DirectX version built into Windows.
Can I uninstall DirectX 12?
Do not try to uninstall or manually replace the core DirectX runtime. It is integrated into Windows. Troubleshoot the game, driver, feature level, and legacy prerequisites instead.
Why does a game say DirectX is missing when DxDiag shows it?
The game may need a legacy D3DX, XInput, XAudio, or XACT library, or the problem may involve the GPU driver, feature level, rendering mode, or damaged game files.

The Bottom Line
For Windows 10 and 11, update DirectX through Windows Update. Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime only for older games that specifically need legacy files such as d3dx11_43.dll or xinput1_3.dll; it is not a separate DirectX 11 upgrade.
