Qualcomm’s early reference-platform tests showed strong CPU, browser, compilation and AI results against an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H system at roughly 23 watts of total system power. Those results demonstrated potential—not a universal guarantee for every retail laptop.
For buyers in 2026, the decision is straightforward: X Elite is attractive for native Arm64 Windows applications, quiet productivity and supported local-AI features. It is a riskier choice for anti-cheat-heavy games, legacy drivers, specialist peripherals, CUDA workloads and any software stack that has not been tested on Windows 11 on Arm.
What this Snapdragon X Elite hands-on actually tested
The original report was published on April 7, 2024, after testing at Qualcomm’s San Diego headquarters. The systems were Qualcomm reference platforms rather than named retail laptops, and the tests were pre-selected demonstrations conducted before widespread commercial availability.
The Snapdragon system was identified as a 23-watt model. That figure referred to approximately total system power, not CPU package power, TDP or a directly comparable processor-only measurement. The comparison system used an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H. There was no independent battery-runtime test, thermal measurement, fan-noise test or long-duration sustained-performance test.

Benchmark results
The following figures reproduce the original event report. They are reference-platform results, not a head-to-head review of retail laptops.
| Benchmark | Snapdragon X Elite, 23 W system | Intel Core Ultra 7 155H |
|---|---|---|
| 7-Zip file compression | 18.98 seconds | 21.09 seconds |
| Visual Studio Code compilation | 30.56 seconds | 68.14 seconds |
| 3DMark GPU benchmark | 39.11 FPS | 33.98 FPS |
| Speedometer 2.0, Edge native Arm | 438 | 376 |
| Speedometer 2.0, Chrome native Arm | 457 | 413 |
| JetStream 2, Chrome native Arm | 316.765 | 295.098 |
| Geekbench 6 CPU single-core | 2,774 | 2,401 |
| Geekbench 6 CPU multi-core | 14,027 | 13,001 |
| Procyon AI inference | 1,716, Qualcomm SNPE | 514, Intel OpenVINO |
The strongest showing came in the selected Visual Studio Code compilation test, where the Snapdragon system completed the workload in less than half the Intel system’s reported time. The native Arm browser tests also favored Snapdragon, while Geekbench showed a smaller advantage.
These numbers do not prove that every X Elite laptop beats every Core Ultra or Ryzen laptop. They also do not establish a universal AI performance ratio: the Procyon systems used different acceleration stacks—Qualcomm SNPE and Intel OpenVINO—so the result is not a generic claim that one NPU is simply “three times faster.”
Likewise, the 3DMark result indicates integrated-GPU potential in that reference system. It is not evidence of parity with a laptop containing a discrete Nvidia or AMD GPU.

Native Arm software is the key to the experience
Windows on Arm performs best when software has a native Arm64 build. Browsers such as Edge and Chrome, Microsoft 365, Teams, Slack, Zoom, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, VLC and many other mainstream applications are available natively or are broadly usable on current Windows-on-Arm systems. In these workloads, X Elite can feel fast and responsive while using less power than many comparable x86 laptops.
The situation changes when an application runs through emulation. Microsoft’s Prism translation layer allows many x86 and x64 Windows programs to run, but compatibility and performance depend on what the program does underneath the interface.
Before buying, check the exact application, plug-ins and hardware rather than only the application’s name. Higher-risk categories include:
- Legacy business utilities and older installers.
- Kernel-level security software and hardware-monitoring tools.
- Printer, scanner and specialist USB-device drivers.
- VPN clients with low-level networking components.
- USB capture devices.
- Audio plug-ins, DAWs and other music-production workflows.
- Engineering, scientific and workstation applications.
- Shell extensions and utilities that integrate deeply with Windows.
A program may fail before launch because its installer adds an unsupported driver or service, even when the main application could theoretically run under emulation. Look for an Arm64 release, a Microsoft Store version, a web version or an explicit vendor compatibility statement. For work or school, test the exact setup before committing to a laptop.
Gaming tests: playable does not mean gaming-laptop capable
Qualcomm’s demonstrations included several games:
- Baldur’s Gate 3: shown at 1080p at approximately 30 FPS, with no obvious stuttering during the demonstration. The settings were not clearly documented.
- Redout 2: shown at 1080p above 30 FPS. Exact settings and detailed frame-rate data were not provided.
- Control: demonstrated, but the source did not provide sufficiently precise, reproducible performance data.
These demonstrations show that an X Elite laptop can run some modern games. They do not make the platform a dependable replacement for a gaming laptop.
Casual, indie, older and less demanding games are the safer category. Later hands-on coverage has identified titles such as Rocket League, Minecraft, Hades and Stardew Valley as generally more suitable, while modern AAA games may require low settings, reduced resolution and upscaling. Those are later reports, not measurements from the original Qualcomm event.
Steam may install normally, yet an individual game can still fail because of emulation, graphics drivers, missing dependencies, launchers or anti-cheat. Kernel-level anti-cheat is especially important: a game can be blocked before rendering begins, regardless of the X Elite GPU’s frame rate. That is a platform-support problem, not something users can fix by lowering texture quality.

- Qualcomm Adreno GPU | Two USB4 40 Gbps USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort and Power Delivery
- Windows 11 PRO | Fingerprint Reader
Even when a game launches, average FPS is not the whole story. Shader compilation stutter, inconsistent frame pacing, driver bugs and translation overhead can make a game feel poor despite an acceptable headline number. Battery drain also rises sharply during gaming.
Gaming verdict: X Elite is reasonable for light gaming and a limited library of compatible titles. Choose a discrete-GPU laptop for competitive multiplayer, modern AAA releases, mod-heavy games or predictable gaming performance.
What the 45-TOPS NPU does
The Hexagon NPU is a specialized accelerator for supported neural-network workloads. It is designed to handle certain AI tasks efficiently, particularly features that may run continuously while minimizing CPU and GPU power use. Qualcomm rates X Elite’s NPU at up to 45 TOPS.
The original demonstration included on-device Stable Diffusion image generation and Qualcomm’s AI inference stack. Qualcomm’s broader positioning includes local generative AI, video-conferencing effects, security features and productivity tasks.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePractical examples can include:
- Background blur and replacement.
- Automatic webcam framing.
- Eye-contact correction.
- Live captions and translation.
- Image generation or enhancement in supported applications.
- Local small-language-model inference.
- Webcam and microphone effects.
- Battery-sensitive, always-on AI features.
However, 45 TOPS is a peak hardware capability figure, not a universal application-speed guarantee. Actual results depend on whether software supports Arm64, whether it can access the Hexagon NPU directly, which runtime or SDK it uses, model size, quantization, driver support and whether processing falls back to the CPU, GPU or cloud.
Qualcomm says X Elite can run generative AI models larger than 13 billion parameters on-device. That is a platform capability claim; it does not mean every model of that size runs quickly on every X Elite laptop or interface.
An application can advertise AI features while still using the CPU, GPU or a remote server. If local AI is a buying requirement, confirm the application’s supported runtime and hardware acceleration path rather than shopping by TOPS alone.
Battery life, thermals and noise
The original hands-on did not measure battery runtime, temperatures, fan noise or sustained performance. No defensible battery-hour, surface-temperature or acoustic figure can be extracted from it.

The narrower conclusion is that Qualcomm designed X Elite around strong performance per watt. Native Arm productivity, web use, media playback and light office workloads are the most favorable scenarios. Sustained CPU work, gaming, emulated applications and prolonged AI processing can reduce the efficiency advantage.
The laptop matters as much as the chip. Fan curves, firmware, screen resolution, OLED power use, memory capacity, Windows build, battery mode and chassis thickness all affect real-world behavior. Qualcomm itself warns that battery life varies by device, settings and usage, so claims such as “multi-day battery life” should be treated as vendor positioning rather than a universal result.
Snapdragon X Elite versus Intel, AMD and Apple silicon
| Workload | Likely strength | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Native Windows productivity | Snapdragon X Elite | Best results require native Arm64 software. |
| Legacy Windows applications | Intel or AMD | x86 compatibility and driver support are more mature. |
| Casual gaming | Depends on the title | Compatibility, frame pacing and anti-cheat matter as much as FPS. |
| Modern AAA gaming | Discrete-GPU laptop | Integrated Adreno graphics are not a substitute for a serious gaming GPU. |
| Local AI | Snapdragon X Elite can be strong | Only supported workloads reliably use the NPU. |
| macOS-native creative work | Apple silicon | Apple benefits from a mature Arm software ecosystem and integrated media engines. |
| Broad Windows compatibility | Intel or AMD | Safer for specialist peripherals, enterprise tools and older utilities. |
Intel and AMD remain the safer choices when a buyer needs established x86 compatibility, dependable peripheral support or a broader range of integrated and discrete graphics options. AMD can be particularly attractive for x86 laptop gaming with strong integrated graphics, while Nvidia- or AMD-GPU systems are better suited to modern games, 3D rendering, CUDA-dependent software and GPU-heavy AI.
Apple silicon offers a more mature Arm software ecosystem and strong platform-wide optimization, but it is a macOS alternative rather than a drop-in Windows replacement. Comparisons should always identify the exact chip, laptop, power mode, cooling system, memory configuration, software architecture and benchmark version.

Buying context in 2026
Snapdragon X Elite is now a first-generation Snapdragon X flagship, not Qualcomm’s newest premium PC platform. As of August 16, 2026, Qualcomm’s product lineup also lists newer Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Plus platforms. That makes the exact price and configuration especially important: an X Elite laptop may be worthwhile when discounted or when its chassis, display, keyboard, battery behavior and support are compelling, but buyers should compare it against newer X2 systems rather than assuming the original X Elite is automatically the best value.
Microsoft’s surfaced Surface Laptop buying page showed a $949.99 sale price against a $1,199.99 full price, but the displayed configuration was identified as Snapdragon X Plus—not X Elite. That price must not be presented as an X Elite price. Check the exact Microsoft configuration before comparing prices.
Dell promotes Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus Copilot+ PCs, including the Latitude 5455, for business users. Dell’s official Snapdragon PC page is a starting point, but model-specific price and configuration should be verified before purchase.
The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 Snapdragon is another business-oriented option with X Elite or X Plus configurations and a 45-TOPS Hexagon NPU. Its official specification sheet is useful for checking ports, memory and processor options, but it is not a current retail-price listing.

Does 45 TOPS mean every AI app will be faster?
No. TOPS is a peak capability figure. The application must support the NPU, its runtime and the relevant model; otherwise work may run on the CPU, GPU or cloud.
What did the 23-watt Snapdragon result measure?
The original demonstration reported approximately 23 watts of total system power on a Qualcomm reference system. It was not a CPU-only TDP or package-power comparison.
Can Windows on Arm run normal Windows applications?
Many mainstream applications run natively or through emulation, but driver-dependent utilities, specialist peripherals, older installers and some enterprise software can fail. Check the exact application and hardware stack.
Should I buy Snapdragon X Elite in 2026?
Buy one when native Windows productivity, efficiency and supported local AI are your priorities and the specific laptop is attractively priced. Compare newer Snapdragon X2 systems and avoid X Elite if you need guaranteed legacy compatibility or serious gaming.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Snapdragon X Elite was a major step forward for Windows on Arm. Its reference-platform results showed impressive CPU and efficiency potential, and its NPU enabled credible local-AI demonstrations.
