If S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl crashes on Windows PC, start with the reversible fixes: update the game, disable every mod and overlay, restart Windows, update the GPU driver, verify the installation, and temporarily lower graphics settings. The right fix depends on whether the crash happens before the menu, during shader compilation, while loading a save, or after extended gameplay.
This guide follows GSC’s official PC troubleshooting recommendations and the current requirements page checked in August 2026.
Before troubleshooting: protect your saves
Back up important local saves before reinstalling the game or changing configuration files. Confirm that cloud synchronization has completed, but do not assume cloud saves are a complete backup. Avoid deleting save folders unless GSC support specifically instructs you to do so.
Update 1.6 added a Local Save Backup Restoration option. It may help when a usable local backup exists, but it cannot recover every corrupted or missing save. If only one save or location crashes, test another manual or autosave first.

Identify the crash pattern
| Symptom | Most likely areas to test first |
|---|---|
| Crash before the main menu | Mods, corrupted files, GPU drivers, overlays, permissions, unsupported hardware |
| Freeze during shader compilation | Allow the first compilation to finish; then test updated drivers and disabled overlays |
| Crash while loading a save | Another save, local backup restoration, mods, or a save-specific bug |
| Random crash after playing for a while | VRAM/RAM pressure, overheating, background software, overclocking, driver timeout |
| Crash after an update or mod install | Disable or remove mods and return to a clean installation |
A long shader-compilation screen is not automatically a desktop crash. Do not repeatedly force-close the game while it is compiling. For shader-specific problems, use the relevant official PC technical-support guides.
1. Update the game and restart Windows
Exit the game and allow Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, or the Xbox PC app to finish pending updates. Restart the PC, then reproduce the same action that previously caused the crash.
GSC’s support hub listed Patch 1.7.1, dated December 10, 2025, as its latest listed patch when checked on August 18, 2026. That patch included unspecified crash fixes and a fail-safe for mods that prevent launch. Check your own launcher for a newer platform build; the support-archive date does not guarantee that every platform shows the same version.
Updates can fix known crashes, but they can also expose incompatibilities in old mods or modified configuration files. See the official patch archive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Disable every mod and overlay
Disable all mods before doing more invasive troubleshooting. GSC warned that updates can make modifications incompatible and recommended disabling mods when stability problems appear after an update.
- Disable or remove every mod.
- Launch the unmodified game.
- Test a new game and, separately, a save created before the mod was installed.
- If stability returns, re-enable mods one at a time.
Remove outdated mods rather than merely toggling them off if they changed game assets, shaders, or configuration files. A crash immediately after a patch is not proof that the patch is defective; an old mod or stale modified file may be the trigger.
Also disable Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner overlays, RGB utilities, screen recorders, performance monitors, and third-party antivirus overlays. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If legitimate security software is involved, use a narrowly scoped exclusion only if you understand the risk.
3. Check the current PC requirements
Use GSC’s requirements page updated August 3, 2026, rather than treating the older launch-era table as current. The listed results use TSR and, at higher settings where applicable, DLSS, FSR, or XeSS.

All listed tiers specify Windows 10/11 and an SSD. Minimum hardware is an entry-level 1080p/30 target, not a guarantee of stable performance in every scene or background workload.
Read the current official system requirements.
4. Update or clean-install the GPU driver
- Identify whether your GPU is NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Install the current driver from the manufacturer’s official website or companion application.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again with mods and overlays still disabled.
If the crash began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver is reasonable. If a normal update does not help, use the driver installer’s clean-install option where available. GSC also documents a more advanced Device Manager removal-and-reinstall process; use that carefully because mishandling driver removal can temporarily affect display output.
Never download individual DLL files or unofficial “driver fixer” utilities from random websites.
5. Verify or repair the game files
Steam
Library > right-click S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish and redownload damaged or missing files if required. See GSC’s Steam instructions.
Epic Games Store
Library > three dots beside the game > Manage > Verify. See the Epic instructions.
GOG Galaxy
Installed > right-click the game > Manage Installation > Verify / Repair. See the GOG instructions.
Xbox PC app
GSC lists the Xbox PC app as a supported platform but does not provide a detailed current repair path in its crash article. Update or reinstall through the Xbox app, and contact Microsoft or GSC support if the available repair controls do not resolve the issue.
Verification repairs the installation; it does not fix overheating, unstable hardware, incompatible mods, or a reproducible game bug.
6. Lower graphics settings strategically
Use low settings as a diagnostic load test, not as a guaranteed cure. GSC specifically recommends lowering Texture Quality, temporarily disabling DLSS or FSR, and testing with V-Sync disabled. Its performance guidance also identifies shadows, anti-aliasing, and effects as useful settings to reduce.
- Set the overall preset to Low or Medium.
- Lower textures first if VRAM is limited.
- Reduce shadows and effects.
- Temporarily disable frame generation if enabled.
- Test with upscaling disabled, then restore it later.
- Cap the frame rate below the monitor’s maximum if GPU load or heat is high.
Restore settings gradually after stability returns. If lowering settings changes nothing, the cause is more likely files, drivers, mods, hardware stability, or a game-specific defect.
7. Close background applications
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Close nonessential applications, then check whether RAM, GPU, CPU, or disk usage is unusually high before launching the game again. Pay special attention to recorders, browser-heavy workloads, RGB or motherboard utilities, monitoring tools, and overlays.

8. Check overheating and hardware stability
GSC identifies overheating as a possible crash cause and suggests monitoring CPU and GPU temperatures with tools such as MSI Afterburner or Ryzen Master. Do not rely on one universal “safe” temperature number: thermal limits vary by processor and graphics card.
- Clean dust from filters, fans, and heatsinks.
- Confirm CPU and GPU fans operate correctly.
- Keep laptops plugged in and use an appropriate performance mode.
- Remove temporary overclocks and undervolts.
- Test without aggressive memory profiles if crashes affect multiple games.
- Use Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer to look for recurring display-driver or hardware errors.
If the PC reboots, blue-screens, or loses display output, investigate system stability rather than treating it as an ordinary game crash.
Check the graphics connection
On a desktop with integrated and dedicated graphics, connect the monitor directly to the graphics card, not the motherboard video output. On a laptop, check Windows Graphics settings and the manufacturer’s GPU mode instead of physically reconnecting anything.
9. Test administrator privileges
For a permission-related crash, right-click the game executable or shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If that helps, open Properties > Compatibility and test Run this program as an administrator.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This is a diagnostic step, not a default requirement. Administrator mode can affect mod managers, overlays, and file permissions, so do not enable it permanently without a reason.
10. Reinstall only after protecting saves
GSC lists reinstallation as a final step. Before uninstalling:
- Back up important local saves.
- Confirm cloud synchronization has completed.
- Disable or remove mods.
- Note your platform and game version.
- Leave local save folders intact unless support says otherwise.
- Reinstall to an SSD with adequate free space.
Reinstallation can repair persistent installation corruption, but it cannot fix defective hardware or every game bug. Follow the platform-specific uninstall and reinstall guidance in GSC’s crash and freeze guide.

Only one save crashes
Try another manual or autosave and test a new game. If a new save works but one location or quest consistently crashes, preserve the affected save and report the reproducible trigger to GSC. Try local save-backup restoration only if the game offers a usable backup.
The crash started after a mod
Remove the mod, restore a clean installation, and test a new save. Re-enable compatible mods individually only after the base game is stable.

The crash started after a graphics-driver update
Test the current driver with overlays disabled. If the timing is clear, try the previous stable driver from the GPU manufacturer, then report the game version and driver version if the issue persists.
What not to do
- Do not download missing DLLs from DLL websites.
- Do not use registry cleaners, automatic driver updaters, or “PC optimizer” subscriptions.
- Do not delete save folders or configuration files without a backup.
- Do not apply random launch commands copied from unverified sources.
- Do not permanently run the game as administrator without diagnosing a permissions problem.
- Do not disable security software indiscriminately.
When to contact GSC support
Escalate when the game still crashes on a clean, unmodded installation after updates, driver testing, file verification, and reduced settings—especially if the PC meets the current requirements, the crash reproduces in the same save or location, or the failure causes save corruption, blue screens, system restarts, or display-driver resets.
Include:
- Store and platform: Steam, Epic, GOG, or Xbox PC app
- Windows version
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage type
- GPU driver and game version
- Whether mods or overlays were installed
- Exact location, quest, save, or action that triggers the crash
- Whether a new save also crashes
- Crash logs, screenshots, video, and DxDiag information where requested
Use GSC’s PC technical-support hub for the current DxDiag and bug-report instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 crash even when my PC meets the minimum requirements?
The minimum tier targets 1080p at 30 FPS and does not guarantee stability in every scene. Crashes can still come from drivers, mods, corrupted files, overheating, RAM or VRAM pressure, overlays, or a game defect.
Can mods cause crashes after an update?
Yes. GSC warns that updates can make mods incompatible. Disable every mod, test the clean game, and re-enable compatible mods individually.
Should I disable DLSS or FSR?
Temporarily, yes, as a diagnostic test. GSC recommends testing with DLSS or FSR disabled, but this is not a universal fix.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDoes verifying files delete saves?
File verification repairs installation files and normally does not delete saves. Back up important saves before any broader reinstall or folder cleanup.
Is shader compilation supposed to take a long time?
A lengthy first-run compilation can resemble a freeze. Allow it to finish once, avoid repeated force-closes, and use GSC’s shader troubleshooting guide if it never completes.
Should I download a missing DLL manually?
No. Use the official game, Windows, and GSC repair guidance. Third-party DLL sites are unsafe and can provide incorrect or malicious files.
When should I reinstall the game?
Only after updates, mod removal, driver testing, file verification, reduced settings, background-app testing, and save backup. Reinstalling cannot fix hardware instability or every game bug.
The Bottom Line
For most PC crashes, follow this order: update and restart, disable mods and overlays, verify your files, update the GPU driver, reduce texture and effects settings, check temperatures and hardware stability, then reinstall only after backing up saves. If a clean installation still fails in a reproducible way, send GSC your system details, game and driver versions, logs, and DxDiag report.
