mapobj90.dll is a Microsoft MapPoint-era application DLL, not a Windows system file. When mapobj90.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the MapPoint installation that owns it instead of copying the file into a Windows folder.
The file is associated with the Microsoft Geography Map Object component. Installation records for MapPoint 2002 North America and MapPoint Europe 2002 place it with MapPoint executables and related geography components. Some older AutoRoute releases may also refer to MapPoint components, but the exact release must be identified before assuming it uses the same DLL.
Fix 1: Identify the program that is requesting mapobj90.dll
Time needed: 5 minutes
Do this before downloading anything or changing Windows system folders.
- Read the complete error message and note the application named in its title bar.
- Open Start, type Installed apps, and open it.
- Search for MapPoint, Microsoft MapPoint, or AutoRoute.
- If you do not see the program, check:
- Desktop shortcuts
- The Start menu
- Startup apps
- Scheduled tasks
- Older Office integrations or business software that may use mapping features
- Right-click the shortcut that launches the failure and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in. These paths can identify an old MapPoint installation even when the program is no longer listed in Installed apps.
A message such as “mapobj90.dll was not found,” “cannot find mapobj90.dll,” or “the program cannot start because mapobj90.dll is missing” usually means the parent application cannot find one of its own files. “Error loading mapobj90.dll” or “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of the DLL is missing.

Fix 2: Repair MapPoint from its installer
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the safest and most likely solution.
- Close MapPoint and any program that uses it.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft MapPoint or the relevant mapping application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Let the installer complete, then restart Windows.
- Launch the same shortcut that produced the error.
If the repair option is not available, run the original MapPoint installer from its legitimate disc, backed-up installer, or licensed installation source. Choose Repair when offered.
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select MapPoint and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Install the same product edition and release as before.
- Restart Windows again and test the application.
Do not mix files from MapPoint 2002, MapPoint 2010, MapPoint 2011, and MapPoint 2013. The name mapobj90.dll is associated with the MapPoint 2002-era component set, but that does not prove that every later MapPoint release contains the same binary.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A security product may remove or quarantine an old application DLL. Do not restore a file solely because its name is mapobj90.dll.
Windows Security
- Open Start, type Windows Security, and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving MapPoint or
mapobj90.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its original file path.
- Restore it only if the path is the expected MapPoint application folder and the file came from your original installation.
- Run another scan after restoring it.
- Repair MapPoint using its installer even if the file is restored.
Do not add a blanket exclusion for C:Windows, the entire drive, or a random DLL download. If the file was found in a temporary directory, a user profile folder, or an unrelated program folder, leave it quarantined and run a full malware scan.

- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the folder shown in the MapPoint shortcut’s Target or Start in field.
- Look for
mapobj90.dll. - If it is present, right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Location, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
- Compare the location with the program’s executable folder.
If the file is missing, return to Fix 2. If it exists but MapPoint still fails, the file may be corrupted, the program may be loading another copy, or one of its dependencies may be missing.
Do not copy the file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:Windows- A different application’s folder
mapobj90.dll is identified in public records as a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application normally uses its own application directory and the 32-bit Windows loader environment. Copying arbitrary files into both system folders can create conflicts rather than solve the problem.
Fix 5: Reinstall a prerequisite only when the installer requests it
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Some MapPoint installation reports mention the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable. That does not prove that mapobj90.dll itself is part of Visual C++ or that installing the runtime will restore the DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this step only when:
- The MapPoint installer explicitly requests a Visual C++ package.
- The error identifies a missing runtime dependency.
- A dependency-analysis tool identifies the runtime as missing.
If the installer names a 32-bit prerequisite, use the x86 package that Microsoft provides for that runtime. Do not remove other Visual C++ packages merely because several versions appear in Installed apps. Side-by-side runtime installations can be required by different programs.
After installing the requested prerequisite, restart Windows and run MapPoint’s repair again.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They usually will not restore mapobj90.dll because this is an application file, not a protected Windows system DLL. They are appropriate when multiple Windows programs fail or Windows reports broader corruption.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test MapPoint again.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC procedure in its System File Checker guidance.

Do not expect SFC to recreate a missing application DLL.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling MapPoint remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Fix 7: Check drivers only if the failure is part of a wider hardware problem
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A graphics or device driver is not the normal cause of a missing mapobj90.dll. Check drivers only if MapPoint also crashes with display errors, several graphics programs fail, or Device Manager reports a device problem.
Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install only the driver appropriate for your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the category containing the affected device.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers across many devices; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling MapPoint when mapobj90.dll itself is absent.

Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a known recent change
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
System Restore is reasonable when MapPoint worked previously and the DLL disappeared immediately after a software change, cleanup, or update.

- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.

- Continue only if you understand what will be removed or restored.
- Restart Windows and test MapPoint.
System Restore may not restore an application file if no restore point contains it. If it does not help, use the original MapPoint installer instead.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.
mapobj90.dll is documented as a MapPoint application component, not as a self-registering ActiveX control or COM server. Do not run:

or:

A “module failed to load” or “entry point not found” result from regsvr32 does not repair MapPoint. The correct installer restores the application files and any required registration data together.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download mapobj90.dll from a generic DLL archive or copy a version supplied by another user. Those files may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another MapPoint release, or omit the dependency that caused the failure.

The safe sources are:
- The original MapPoint installation disc
- A verified backup of your own installer
- A legitimate licensed Microsoft installation source
- The MapPoint application’s built-in repair process
There is no reason to place this file in a Windows system folder. Restoring one DLL also does not repair missing registry entries, licensing data, map data, shared runtimes, or installer dependencies.
What the error wording means
- “mapobj90.dll was not found”: Windows could not find the file in the application’s expected search locations.
- “mapobj90.dll is missing”: The parent application believes one of its installed components is absent.
- “Error loading mapobj90.dll”: The file may be damaged, incompatible, blocked, or dependent on another missing DLL.
- “The specified module could not be found”: The named file may exist while one of its dependencies does not.
- “Procedure entry point not found”: The application may be loading an incompatible version of the DLL.
- “Cannot register mapobj90.dll”: Registration was attempted even though manual registration is generally not the correct repair.

FAQ
Is mapobj90.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Microsoft MapPoint application software and should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich MapPoint versions contain it?
Installation records for MapPoint 2002 North America and MapPoint Europe 2002 list the file. Do not assume every later MapPoint release uses the same binary without checking its own installation media.
Does AutoRoute use mapobj90.dll?
Some older references associate MapObj90 with AutoRoute, but the exact AutoRoute release matters. Repair the specific AutoRoute installation rather than copying a DLL from MapPoint.
What if the file exists but MapPoint still fails?
Check the full path, quarantine history, Event Viewer, and dependent modules. The application may be loading a different copy or a dependency may be missing. Reinstalling the matching MapPoint release is safer than replacing individual files.
Is Visual C++ 2010 required?
Only install it when the MapPoint installer or dependency diagnosis specifically requests it. The missing DLL alone does not prove that Visual C++ 2010 is required.
Should I run System Restore?
Use it only when the failure follows a known recent change and a suitable restore point exists. MapPoint repair is the more direct solution.
What information is useful for further diagnosis?
Record the exact error text, application name and version, full path shown in the shortcut, Windows version, whether the file exists, and whether antivirus software quarantined it. This distinguishes a missing MapPoint file from a missing dependency or a separate licensing problem.
