ieawsdc.dll is a Microsoft Office component, so a missing ieawsdc.dll error usually points to a damaged or incomplete Office installation. The safest fix is to repair the Office installation that the affected program is using, not to download a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program fails: Word, Excel, Access, another Office application, or an older database program.
- When the error appears: while launching Office, opening a document, opening an Access database, or starting another application.
- The exact wording: missing, not found, corrupt, could not be loaded, or not designed to run on Windows.
- Office architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit Office. This is separate from whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Installation type: Microsoft 365 or Click-to-Run, or an MSI-based perpetual Office installation.
- Recent changes: an Office update, cleanup utility, antivirus detection, uninstall, or failed installation.
These details help prevent repairing the wrong Office generation when multiple versions are installed.

What is ieawsdc.dll?
ieawsdc.dll is identified in Microsoft Office metadata as Microsoft Office Template and Media Control. It is an Office file rather than a standard Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET dependency.
Microsoft file manifests show the component in Office 2010, Office 2013, and Office 2016 packages, with earlier Office 2003-era components also associated with it. The exact file version depends on the Office generation, update level, language, and architecture. Microsoft’s Office 2010, Office 2013, and Office 2016 file information documents list examples of the component and its 32-bit and 64-bit builds.

Windows may display messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because ieawsdc.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because ieawsdc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file ieawsdc.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “ieawsdc.dll could not be loaded.”
Those are generic loader or application messages. They do not mean that the file ships with Windows.
Fix 1: Run Office Online Repair
Online Repair is the most likely solution when Word, Excel, Access, or another Office application cannot load this file. Microsoft says that Online Repair reinstalls and repairs Office, while Quick Repair only replaces detected corrupted files.
- Close Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and every other Office program.
- In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office in the list.
- Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the Office entry in Windows 10.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and confirm the prompts.
- Allow the process to finish. It may require an internet connection and can take longer than Quick Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that produced the error and test the same document or database.
If the error is gone, the Office installation had a missing, damaged, or mismatched file. If repair reports that source files cannot be found, or the same error returns, continue with the update and reinstall steps below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry Quick Repair only as a faster first test
If you need to test a shorter repair first:
- Return to the Office entry in Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Office.
If Quick Repair does not restore ieawsdc.dll, run Online Repair instead. Do not repeatedly run Quick Repair when the installation itself appears incomplete.
Check whether the application is using the expected Office build
A 32-bit Office installation can run on 64-bit Windows. Match the DLL and repair process to the Office architecture, not simply to the Windows architecture.
To check Office architecture:
- Open any Office application that still starts.
- Select File > Account.
- Select About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent entry for that application.
- Read the About dialog. It identifies whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit and shows the installed build information.
If no Office application opens, check the installed Office entry in Settings > Apps and identify whether you have Microsoft 365, Office 2010, Office 2013, Office 2016, or another licensed installation. If more than one Office generation is installed, the application named in the error matters. An older Access database may be loading a component from an older Office installation rather than from the newest one.
Do not use a 32-bit DLL to replace a 64-bit Office file, or the reverse. The file’s exact size and build can vary across Office generations, languages, update levels, and architectures.

An Office update can correct mismatched files after an incomplete update or installation.
For Microsoft 365 and supported Click-to-Run Office versions:
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Select Update Now.
- Let Office download and install available updates.
- Restart Office and test the affected operation.
For Office 2010:
- Open an Office application.
- Select File > Help.
- Select Update Options.
- Choose the available update command.
If Office cannot open far enough to reach these menus, use Online Repair instead. If updating is unavailable or fails, reinstall Office from the Microsoft account or licensed installer associated with that installation.
Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall Office
Use a complete reinstall when Online Repair cannot obtain its source files, the Office installation is badly damaged, or the error returns immediately after repair.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before uninstalling, make sure you have the Microsoft account details, product information, or licensed installer needed to reinstall Office.
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Microsoft’s official Office uninstall guidance.
- Follow the supported uninstall procedure for your Office installation.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office using the official Microsoft account or licensed installation media.
- Install available Office updates.
- Open the affected program and test it with the same file that originally failed.
A reinstall restores the complete, matching Office package. It is safer than reconstructing one DLL because it also restores related files, registration data, and dependencies.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an Office file after a detection or false positive. Do not assume every detection is harmless.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent event involving
ieawsdc.dllor the Office installation. - Expand the event and review its path and action.
- If the file is in the expected Office installation directory, verify that the installation is genuine and that the file has a valid Microsoft signature before considering restoration.
- If the path is unexpected, the signature is absent, or the detection remains suspicious, leave it quarantined and repair or reinstall Office.
Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the device. Repairing Office is generally preferable to restoring an isolated file manually.

Fix 5: Check an old Access database reference
An older Access database may fail because it references the Office Template and Media Control type library associated with ieawsdc.dll. This is different from a simple missing file in a modern Microsoft 365 installation.
If Access itself opens:
- Open a backup copy of the database.
- Select Database Tools > Visual Basic.
- In the Visual Basic Editor, select Tools > References.
- Look for an entry marked MISSING.
- If the database no longer needs that reference, clear it.
- Select Debug > Compile.
- Test the database carefully.
If the database still needs the reference, do not simply clear it. Repair the Office version that originally supplied the reference, or restore that compatible Office component through the program’s official installation. Keep an untouched backup before changing references.

Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for possible Windows corruption
ieawsdc.dll is an Office-private file, so Windows System File Checker is not the primary repair method. SFC and DISM repair Windows-protected components and may not restore an Office DLL.
Use them when other Windows symptoms suggest broader component corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Office again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but ieawsdc.dll is still missing, that is not unusual. Return to Office Online Repair or reinstall Office.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected Office installation remains the definitive fix for this file.
Do not start with drivers or Windows Features
ieawsdc.dll is not a graphics, audio, chipset, or Windows Features dependency. Updating drivers in Device Manager is therefore not a targeted fix.
If the error appears only inside a specialized application that also reports hardware failures, you can inspect the relevant device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not expect this to restore an Office DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the versions that need attention, while driver installation is performed by the full version; this is optional and does not replace repairing the Office installation.
Likewise, enabling additional entries in Turn Windows features on or off will not normally restore an Office-private component. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages solely because this filename appears in the error.
Does regsvr32 apply?
regsvr32 is not a general repair command for every DLL. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Some catalogued ieawsdc.dll builds expose such an entry point, but registration will not replace a missing file, repair damaged Office files, or make an incompatible Office architecture work. It should not be the first remedy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Only consider registration when a specific, intact DLL is already present in the correct Office directory and an Office application or documented deployment process explicitly requires it. Do not download a DLL to make this command work. In most missing-file cases, Online Repair is the correct action.
Why downloading ieawsdc.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites and do not copy a downloaded file into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- another program’s installation folder
A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different Office build, use the wrong architecture, lack the expected signature, or depend on other files that are also missing. It can also create entry-point and version conflicts.
Use Microsoft’s Office repair, update, uninstall, and reinstall processes instead. These restore a matched installation from an authorized source.
Frequently asked questions
Is ieawsdc.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Office component associated with Microsoft Office Template and Media Control. Its presence in a loader error does not mean that Windows itself should supply it.
Which Office versions contain it?
Microsoft file manifests list examples from Office 2010, Office 2013, and Office 2016. It also appeared in Office 2003-era components. These historical listings are not a complete catalogue of every current build.
Why does Access mention it?
An old Access database can contain a reference to the Office Template and Media Control type library. If that reference is broken, repair the matching Office installation or remove the reference only when the database no longer needs it.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It usually indicates that the loader found an incompatible, damaged, incomplete, or incorrectly replaced file. It is not a reason to copy another DLL into a Windows system folder.
When is reinstalling Office necessary?
Reinstall when Online Repair fails, cannot find installation sources, or the error returns after repair and updating. Use the official licensed installer rather than a standalone DLL.
What should I collect if nothing works?
Record the Office version and architecture, installation type, exact error text, application executable that triggers it, full path shown for ieawsdc.dll, recent changes, antivirus actions, and the results of repair, update, reinstall, DISM, and SFC. This information will help identify whether the issue is a damaged Office installation, a broken old reference, quarantine, or a broader Windows problem.
