The App Store edition supports a broad range of classic platforms, but it is not identical to the desktop release: its available cores are fixed, and users cannot freely download additional emulator cores at runtime.
What RetroArch on iOS actually is
RetroArch is a frontend and emulation framework rather than a collection of separate emulator apps. It uses libretro cores to handle different consoles, computers and arcade platforms, while providing shared features such as save states, shaders, overlays, rewind, fast-forward, cheats, controller remapping, netplay and RetroAchievements.
The application is free on the App Store, is listed at 683.2 MB, and currently shows version 1.22.2, released on November 18, 2025. The listing supports iOS 12 and later, iPadOS 12 and later, macOS 10.13 and later, visionOS 1.0 and later, and tvOS 13 and later. Availability and compatibility can still vary by device and operating system.
RetroArch does not supply commercial game ROMs. You must provide content you are legally entitled to use.

Supported systems
The App Store listing names support for popular systems including:
- PlayStation and PlayStation Portable
- Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance
- Sega Mega Drive, Sega CD and Sega 32X
- Sega Saturn
- 3DO and Atari Jaguar
- Arcade platforms
That list should not be interpreted as a promise that every RetroArch desktop core is available on iOS. The App Store listing does not list PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo Switch support.
The biggest App Store limitation: cores are bundled
On desktop, RetroArch commonly downloads cores through its online updater. The standard iOS App Store build works differently. Apple requires executable code on iOS to be signed, so cores cannot be installed or updated freely after the application has been built. Libretro’s iOS compilation documentation explains why iOS builds must include their cores in advance.
As a result, the App Store package contains a fixed, Apple-compatible selection. If Core Downloader is absent, that is normally expected for this build—not evidence that the menu is broken. The RetroArch website’s general guidance about downloading cores applies to platforms and builds that permit runtime installation; it also notes that App Store functionality can differ because of platform restrictions.

Do not confuse Core Downloader with Core System Files Downloader. Where available, Core Downloader installs emulator cores. Core System Files Downloader retrieves supporting files required by some cores and does not add new emulator cores.
In a different build that supports downloadable cores, a hidden Core Downloader can reportedly be enabled at Settings → User Interface → Menu Item Visibility → Show Core Downloader, followed by a restart. That path does not override the App Store build’s signing restrictions.
How to open a game on iPhone or iPad
- Copy a legally obtained game file to a location accessible through Apple’s Files app.
- Open RetroArch and choose Load Content → Browse.
- Select the game file and choose an appropriate installed core if RetroArch asks you to do so.
- Once launched, the game can be played without first creating a playlist.
This direct-launch route is important on iOS. A game may open successfully through Load Content even when RetroArch’s internal directory view appears empty. Manually launched games can also be added to history.
Creating a library with manual scanning
To organize games into playlists, use Import Content → Manual Scan. Scanning is optional: it is a library-management feature, not a prerequisite for launching content.

- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
ROM hacks, uncommon extensions and files that do not match RetroArch’s scanning database may fail to appear in an imported playlist while still working through Load Content → Browse. If a file is missing from a playlist, try opening it directly before assuming that the game or core is incompatible.
Useful iOS settings
- Menu driver: Settings → User Interface → Menu.
- Touch controls: Settings → User Interface → On-Screen Overlay → Overlay Preset.
- Directories: Settings → Directories.
The iPad version uses Ozone as its default menu driver according to the 1.20.0 release notes. RetroArch also supports MFi controllers, per-core and per-game remapping, gyro controls, overlays, shaders and advanced latency options.
The former floating “Down Arrow” menu was removed from the iOS release. Its functions were moved into the regular settings menus, so older guides showing that control may not match the current interface.
What changed in recent versions
- 1.22.2, November 18, 2025: added the b2 Acorn BBC Micro and DICE arcade cores, camera, MIDI and location drivers, screen-orientation lock, and menu and overlay fixes.
- 1.21.0, April 29, 2025: added ten cores, including Anarch, Ardens, Beetle PC-FX, bsnes-jg, Doukutsu-rs, Holani, Mr.Boom, NooDS, Opera and Yabause. It also added adaptive default overlays and SDL2 microphone input.
- 1.20.0, January 9, 2025: added FFmpeg screen recording and streaming, iCloud save-sync options, improved mouse and trackpad support, viewport-position options, and an iPad menu update.
- 1.19.1, June 6, 2024: fixed several PPSSPP crashes and added the DoubleCherryGB core.
Common problems and practical fixes
RetroArch shows empty folders
If the ROMs are visible in Files but directories appear empty in RetroArch, try Load Content → Browse first. Current iOS reports describe cases where directory settings and manual scanning show empty folders even though direct browsing or automatic scanning works. An empty internal listing therefore does not prove that the files were copied incorrectly.

A game crashes immediately
Some systems require BIOS or other system files. A missing or incorrectly named BIOS can cause a launch failure, but the required filename depends on the core and system. The App Store listing does not provide a universal BIOS list, so check the documentation for the specific core rather than copying arbitrary files into the system directory.
A core cannot be deleted
App Store cores are part of the signed application bundle, so the usual desktop-style core deletion controls may not be available. Removing and reinstalling the application is not a substitute for managing individual bundled cores and may also affect local data, so back up saves before taking that step.
An arcade game does not work
“Arcade support” covers the cores included in this particular package, not every arcade core available on desktop or in a custom build. Current reports distinguish the App Store’s available FBNeo support from MAME availability. Core choice, ROM-set version and required files all matter.
A demanding game is too slow
Some emulation workloads depend on JIT, which is not available to ordinary App Store applications according to a RetroArch maintainer report. Performance can therefore differ substantially from desktop, sideloaded or specially provisioned builds. Lowering demanding video options may help, but it cannot remove platform-level limitations.

When a custom or sideloaded build makes sense
If the bundled cores do not cover the systems you need, the practical alternative is a custom iOS build rather than repeatedly searching for a missing App Store menu. Libretro’s official build instructions begin with:
git clone https://github.com/libretro/libretro-super.git libretro-super
cd libretro-super
./libretro-fetch.sh
To fetch only RetroArch:
./libretro-fetch.sh --retroarch
To fetch selected cores:
./libretro-fetch.sh snes9x2010 fceumm
The documentation also provides scripts for downloading prebuilt cores and compiling ARM64 iOS cores:
./pkg/apple/update-cores.sh [--tvos] [core name]...
./libretro-build-ios-arm64.sh snes9x2010 fceumm
./libretro-build-ios-arm64.sh
Building and installing such a package requires an appropriate Apple development and signing setup. It is more involved than installing from the App Store, and the resulting maintenance, compatibility and signing responsibilities are yours.
Is RetroArch on iOS worth using?
For classic-console players who want one interface, controller support, save states and graphics options, the App Store release is a substantial addition to Apple’s gaming software lineup. Its strongest use case is the systems covered by its bundled cores, especially older Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation, PSP, Nintendo 64, DS and selected arcade platforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is a poorer fit if you expect the unrestricted core library of desktop RetroArch, need systems absent from the App Store listing, depend on JIT-heavy emulation, or want to install and remove cores on demand. The right expectation is not “desktop RetroArch on an iPhone,” but a curated, signed iOS build of the same frontend framework.
