Fantasy Football Running Back Handcuffs: When to Roster a Backup

A running back handcuff can protect a roster or provide contingent upside—but only when his likely role and value justify the bench spot.

Roster a running back handcuff when his likely role, ability and potential value justify using a bench spot on him. Don’t assume every starter has a backup who will inherit the workload: an injury can create a committee, and a backup may offer no help while the starter is healthy. Check your league settings and the latest depth chart, injury news and role reports before making the call.

What a running back handcuff is—and isn’t

A handcuff is a backup expected to take on a starter’s job if that starter is injured. The label describes a possible path to opportunity, not a guarantee of carries, fantasy points or exclusive control of the backfield. FantasyPros publishes a projected starter-and-handcuff list, but each name still needs to be evaluated against its team’s current roles and circumstances: FantasyPros’ handcuff list.

How to decide whether a backup is worth a roster spot

Compare the player’s contingent upside with the bench option you would have to drop or pass up. Several signals should line up before you spend a pick or waiver claim.

Is his path to the lead role clear?

Find out whether he is genuinely next in line or whether multiple backs could divide the work. NFL.com’s analysis of handcuffs cautions against assuming a listed backup will become the clear starter: Matt Harmon’s analysis of handcuffing running backs.

Can he make use of the opportunity?

A backup’s opportunity matters only if he can turn it into useful production. Consider his demonstrated ability and whether he could earn carries, receptions, goal-line touches or another valuable part of the offense. A depth-chart promotion does not automatically make a player a workhorse.

Does he help while the starter is healthy?

A committee role, passing-game work or goal-line opportunities can give a backup value before an injury. That standalone use makes the cost of holding him lower. If he is useful only after the starter goes down, you are reserving a bench spot for uncertain future value.

What would you give up to roster him?

Factor in your scoring system, bench size, number of starting and flex positions, current roster needs and the alternatives available in your draft or on waivers. NFL.com’s 2026 draft guidance recommends weighing rankings, average draft position, positional scarcity and league tendencies when making roster decisions: NFL.com’s 2026 fantasy draft strategy.

Does the price match the risk?

A late pick or inexpensive waiver stash can make sense for contingent upside. A steep acquisition cost calls for a stronger case that the backup can fill a useful role. Reassess when injuries, roster moves or changes in usage alter that case.

Do backups inherit the starter’s whole workload?

No. In Matt Harmon’s NFL.com analysis of a 2010–2014 sample, the ten primary handcuffs studied averaged 53% of their teams’ carries while the starter was out. Harmon compared that with roughly 60% to the low 70% range for a typical clear workhorse; only two of the ten handcuffs reached workhorse-level carry shares. These are historical figures from a small sample, not a forecast for a current backfield.

The practical lesson is that a replacement may lead a committee rather than absorb every touch. For a current decision, look at that season’s depth chart, coaching usage and the other backs available; the historical figure cannot tell you what any particular backup will do.

Should you draft your own starter’s backup or another manager’s?

Either can be sensible, depending on what your roster needs. A clear backup to your own core running back can protect against losing a valuable starter. A backup on another team can offer upside if you already have reasonable coverage and want to benefit if another manager’s starter misses time. NFL.com’s 2026 draft advice specifically presents targeting other managers’ handcuffs as an upside strategy, while Harmon’s older analysis warns that an insurance pick with no value absent an injury can tie up a bench spot.

2026 handcuff examples are snapshots, not guarantees

NFL.com’s 2026 draft article names Tyler Allgeier (ARI), Keaton Mitchell (LAC), Brian Robinson (ATL) and Tank Bigsby (PHI) among handcuff targets. Those are examples from that article, not evergreen rankings or confirmation that each player currently has the same role.

PFF’s August 1, 2026 analysis discusses Blake Corum as contingent upside behind Kyren Williams and Jaylen Wright behind De’Von Achane. PFF reports that Corum had 145 carries in 2025; it reports Wright had 127 offensive snaps and 70 carries that year. These past-season usage figures offer context for the article’s role discussion, but do not establish either player’s status in a particular current week: PFF’s 2026 running back handcuff analysis.

Use any named example to ask the same practical questions: who is most likely to get the next opportunity, how useful could his workload be, does he already have a role, and has anything changed since the analysis appeared? Check current team and injury news before acting. FantasyPros’ projected list can provide another reference point, but projections are not guarantees.

A practical roster rule

  • Stash him when he has a credible path to lead the backfield, enough ability to use the opportunity, a potentially meaningful workload and an acquisition cost that fits your roster.
  • Give extra weight to backups who can contribute while the starter is active.
  • Look elsewhere when the role is unclear and the player has no standalone value—unless a deep league or a changed situation makes the contingent upside more worthwhile.

This is a decision framework, not a universal workload threshold. No fixed number of handcuffs to roster or minimum workload requirement applies to every league; league depth, scoring, lineup requirements, bench capacity and available alternatives all matter.
