Check the manufacturer’s specifications and manual for that combination specifically; separate “4K” and “120Hz” maximums, or an HDMI 2.1 label alone, do not establish it. Sony confirms PS5 supports 4K 120Hz output and recommends using the included PS5 HDMI cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120Hz.
What the PS5 and display each need to support
The PS5 can output 4K at 120Hz, but it cannot make a display accept a signal that its hardware or chosen input does not support. Sony’s resolution and troubleshooting guide advises checking the TV’s 4K 120Hz support, using the appropriate HDMI 2.1 port, and enabling any TV setting needed for that port’s full capabilities.
When checking a product, look for explicit support for 4K at 120Hz over HDMI on the specific input you plan to use. Do not infer that the display supports 4K 120Hz just because its maximum resolution is 4K and its maximum refresh rate is 120Hz; the manufacturer must specify that the two work together. If a feature depends on an input setting, confirm the setting and how to enable it in the manual.
How to compare TVs and monitors
Resolution and refresh rate together
Decide whether you require native 4K at 120Hz or would accept 1440p at 120Hz. These are different display modes: a QHD monitor can deliver a 120Hz PS5 experience without being a 4K display. Check the supported resolution-and-refresh combinations rather than relying on separate maximum figures.

HDMI inputs and bandwidth settings
Check which individual HDMI port supports the signal you want. Some displays require an input setting to enable the port’s full bandwidth, so consult the model’s manual and make sure the PS5 will use the correct input.
VRR and ALLM are separate checks
If you want Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), check that the exact display supports VRR over HDMI and is compatible with PS5. Sony says VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with PS5 output on compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR displays; results can vary by display and game. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is another separate feature, available only on compatible TVs. An HDMI 2.1 label does not, by itself, confirm ALLM support. Choose a screen for where you play
A TV may suit a larger shared viewing setup, while a monitor may be more convenient for closer, desktop-style play. This is a practical setup choice rather than a claim that one type of screen performs better. For example, Sony’s 27-inch gaming monitor is QHD (2560 × 1440), supports up to 120Hz on PS5, and has HDMI 2.1 inputs. It is an example of a 120Hz PS5 monitor, not a 4K display.
Set up 4K 120Hz on PS5
- Connect the PS5 to the display’s HDMI port specified for 4K 120Hz. Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5.
- On the TV or monitor, enable any input or enhanced-format setting the manufacturer requires for that port’s full HDMI capabilities.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the connected HDMI device’s reported capabilities and check the resolution and video transfer rate settings.
- Use a game and display mode that support the output you want. The display’s compatibility with a signal does not mean every game will run at 4K and 120Hz.
If 4K 120Hz is not available
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the display, connection and console settings before concluding that the display is incompatible.

- Confirm the model and port: Verify that the exact TV or monitor model supports 4K 120Hz and that the PS5 is plugged into the HDMI input that supports it.
- Check display settings and firmware: Enable any required high-bandwidth input mode and install current display firmware.
- Check the cable and connection path: Try the cable included with the PS5. If replacing it, use an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120Hz. Connect the PS5 directly to the display while troubleshooting; an AV receiver or other intermediary may affect the signal.
- Review PS5 output settings: Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check the detected HDMI capabilities, resolution and video transfer rate. Sony notes that lowering Video Transfer Rate can limit 4K 120Hz output.
For a model-specific buying decision, rely on that manufacturer’s current specification sheet and manual. Sony’s guidance establishes PS5 output and troubleshooting requirements; it is not a comparative ranking of TVs or monitors, and does not establish their prices, input lag or picture quality.
