Short answer: Yes. In September 2024, Nexus Mods user iArtorias released NoPSSDK, a DLL-based mod that bypassed God of War Ragnarök’s PlayStation Network sign-in flow on PC. The mod disappeared from Nexus Mods and GitHub within days, and its removal was never publicly tied to a confirmed Sony takedown. More importantly, Sony’s current support documentation says PSN sign-in is optional for the desktop PC version as of January 30, 2025. The main exception is Steam Deck, where Sony still lists PSN and Steam account linking as required.
What the NoPSSDK mod actually did
NoPSSDK was not a graphics, gameplay, or content modification. Its purpose was to remove the PC port’s dependency on the PlayStation PC SDK and bypass the PSN account prompt.

Contemporary reporting described the release as a DLL placed in the game’s installation folder. The DLL intercepted the game’s calls to the PlayStation Network API and disabled the PSN interface, allowing players to decline the connection prompt and continue into the single-player game. Reports also described the mod as using Microsoft Detours rather than changing the original executable. That was a description of the mod’s implementation, not an independent security audit.

Ars Technica reported the original release and its technical approach shortly after the game launched on PC in September 2024.
Why players objected to the requirement
God of War Ragnarök is primarily a single-player action-adventure game. Requiring players to create or link a PSN account before playing therefore felt disconnected from the campaign’s core functionality.
The requirement also created regional problems. In 2024, contemporary reports said the game was unavailable for purchase in more than 170 territories where PSN was not supported. That was a launch-era account of regional availability, not a guarantee that every restriction remains unchanged today.

Account-linked services and rewards were separate from the campaign itself.

How the original workaround worked
At a high level, the reported process was:
- Place the NoPSSDK DLL in the game’s installation directory.
- Launch God of War Ragnarök.
- Decline the PSN connection prompt.
- Continue to the game without linking a PSN account.
That is a historical description, not a current installation guide. The original Nexus Mods page now says, “The mod you were looking for was removed by its author.” Its original repository is not an authoritative source for a current download, and an old binary may be incompatible with later patches or unsafe if obtained from an unknown reupload.
Why was NoPSSDK removed?
The mod was reported on September 24, 2024, and had disappeared from Nexus Mods and GitHub by September 25. Nexus Mods said the author had removed it and that the site had contacted the author for an explanation. The current Nexus listing confirms that the author removed the mod.
There is no verified evidence that Sony issued a takedown request or took legal action. Some contemporary coverage speculated that Sony may have objected, but that remains speculation. The confirmed facts are that the listings vanished and Nexus Mods attributed the removal to the author.

Even if a redistributed DLL were identical to the original, it could fail with later game updates, cause crashes, or have been modified by someone else.

Sony later made PSN optional on desktop PC
The most important update came after the mod story. A Santa Monica Studio support page dated January 30, 2025, says that signing in to PSN is optional for God of War Ragnarök on PC.
For an ordinary desktop player, that means the old NoPSSDK workaround is no longer needed. Install or update the game through Steam, launch it normally, and skip or decline PSN sign-in if you do not want to connect an account. The current supported solution is to use the game’s optional account flow rather than an unofficial DLL.
Skipping PSN does not remove access to the main single-player campaign. Signing in does provide optional rewards, however:
- the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos;
- 500 Hacksilver; and
- 250 XP.
According to Santa Monica Studio, the reward items become available through the first Lost Items chest after the relevant update. Players who do not sign in can still obtain the armor set during a New Game+ run, as before.

Desktop PC and Steam Deck are not treated the same
Santa Monica Studio’s account-flow documentation distinguishes desktop PCs from Steam Deck:

Do not assume that an old NoPSSDK copy is a supported or reliable Steam Deck solution. Its current compatibility has not been established, and the official documentation still lists account linking as required on that device.
What to do if the desktop version still asks for PSN
If the current desktop version continues to insist on account linking, use a supported troubleshooting path rather than searching for a replacement DLL:

- Update the game. The PC release has continued receiving patches after the 2024 mod. Santa Monica Studio’s PC support hub lists version 9.01, dated August 20, 2025.
- Remove old third-party files. If you previously installed NoPSSDK or another PSN-bypass DLL, remove it from the game directory.
- Verify the Steam installation. Use Steam’s installed-file verification option to restore or check files affected by an old modification.
- Restart Steam and the game. Account-flow behavior can differ depending on whether you have previously signed into a PlayStation overlay or linked PSN to Steam through another Sony PC game.
- Use official support. If an updated desktop installation still requires linking, consult the Santa Monica Studio or PlayStation support pages instead of downloading an unknown reupload.
File verification may overwrite or remove third-party changes, and later patches can break old DLL-based workarounds. Those are practical compatibility concerns even apart from the security risk of obtaining an unofficial binary.
The current verdict
NoPSSDK was a real and notable short-lived workaround: it targeted the PlayStation PC SDK and PSN interface rather than modifying the game’s content. It appeared soon after the September 2024 PC launch, disappeared from its original hosting pages within days, and was never conclusively shown to have been removed by Sony.
For desktop PC players in 2026, though, it is mainly a historical footnote. Sony’s January 30, 2025 support update made PSN sign-in optional for the PC version, so there is no current reason to install an abandoned or redistributed DLL simply to play the campaign without an account. Steam Deck remains the documented exception, with PSN and Steam linking still listed as required.
