If you accept an invite or matchmaking prompt and then can’t connect, first check the game and platform service status, then run your device’s internet test. Next, find out whether the problem affects one game or server, or several online services. That narrows the cause without assuming there is one universal fix: the right steps depend on the game, platform, and exact error.
1. Check whether the game or platform is having an outage
Before changing network settings, check the game’s official status page and the service status page for your platform. Maintenance or an outage can prevent a connection even when your home internet is working. PlayStation’s guidance for error NW-31201-7 notes that the PlayStation or game server may be unavailable: PlayStation error NW-31201-7. Steam also recommends checking service status during network troubleshooting: Steam: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity.
If an official status page reports an issue, wait for service to return and try again. Changing your router settings will not resolve a game-server outage.
2. Test your device’s internet connection
Run the built-in network test on your console or computer. On PS4, for the cited NW-31201-7 error, the path is Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Use your own device’s network test if you are on another platform.

A failed test points toward a broader connection problem; a successful test confirms that the device can reach the internet, but does not prove that a particular game server is available or that the game’s connection requirements are met.
3. Find out how widely the failure occurs
Try another online game or server, and check whether other players are reporting the same issue. If possible, test another device on the same network. These comparisons help separate a local connection problem from a game-, server-, or platform-specific failure.

- Several games or services fail: investigate the general internet connection, router, firewall, or other network interruptions.
- Only one game or server fails: check that game’s service status and official support for the exact error. The issue may be with that game, its server, or a particular region. - Other devices on the same network connect successfully: focus on the affected device, its game or platform settings, and any security software or network restrictions applied to it.
4. Test the local network without making risky changes
If the device is using Wi-Fi or powerline networking, temporarily try a direct Ethernet connection if one is available. Valve recommends a direct wired test to help determine whether wireless or powerline connectivity is contributing to intermittent Steam connection problems: Steam: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix; a cable will not resolve an outage, account issue, or game bug.
You can also reduce other network activity temporarily and check the router and firewall using the game or platform’s official instructions. Avoid forwarding ports, turning off security software, or replacing router equipment based only on the word “accept.” The required settings depend on the game, device, network, and error.

5. Follow instructions for the exact game and error
Games do not all connect players in the same way. Some use peer-to-peer connections with NAT traversal; others connect players to dedicated servers, and relays may be involved. In Steam’s peer-to-peer context, Valve explains that when a peer does not share its IP address, a direct connection is not possible and NAT traversal requires a relay: Steam: Peer-to-Peer Networking and Sharing Your IP Address. That describes Steam’s networking context, not a rule that applies identically to every game.
Look up the exact error text in the game or platform’s official support pages, and follow those instructions for your setup. To identify the right guidance, note the game, platform, whether you accepted an invite or matchmaking prompt, the error text, and whether other games or servers connect.
