acdchatchres.dll is an Autodesk application resource file, not a normal Windows component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Autodesk program that requests it. Do not download a loose copy into System32; first identify the affected AutoCAD-era product, check antivirus quarantine, and restore the files from legitimate installation media.
What this file actually does
The filename is associated with “dchatchRes Resource DLL,” a resource module used by Autodesk and AutoCAD-era software. Its name strongly suggests resources related to hatch functions, such as interface strings, dialogs, icons, or other application assets.

Public file metadata reports Autodesk as the publisher and identifies the file as a 32-bit PE/DLL with version 16.0.0.86 and a size of roughly 6.5 KB. Treat those details as reported metadata rather than a universal specification because Autodesk does not publish a current file manifest confirming every build.
The 16.0 release number is consistent with AutoCAD 2004. Autodesk’s release history identifies AutoCAD 2004 as release 16.0, AutoCAD 2005 as 16.1, and AutoCAD 2006 as 16.2. However, there is no official Autodesk mapping proving that every acdchatchres.dll error comes from one specific AutoCAD edition. The affected program could be AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, a vertical AutoCAD product, or another application from the same generation.

It is not known to be a Windows system DLL. It should normally remain in the Autodesk program’s installation folder, not in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by acdchatchres.dll is missing. The named file is not always the only file involved.
Common causes and the correct response
| Symptom or recent change | Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error began after uninstalling or cleaning software | An Autodesk file was deleted | Repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product |
| Windows Security shows a detection | The file was quarantined | Verify the product and installer before restoring anything |
| The error appeared after an update or rollback | Mismatched or incomplete application files | Repair the installation, then reinstall if needed |
| A different AutoCAD edition was installed | Files from separate products do not match | Reinstall the original edition and version |
| The application is very old on Windows 10 or 11 | Operating-system compatibility problem | Check compatibility and use supported installation media |
| Other Windows programs also fail | Broader Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
regsvr32 reports no entry point |
The DLL is a resource module, not a self-registering component | Stop using registration commands and repair the application |
Before repairing, identify the affected application
The error dialog may name the executable that requested the file. Record that name before closing it. Also note the complete message, such as:
acdchatchres.dll was not foundThe file acdchatchres.dll is missingFailed to load acdchatchres.dllError loading acdchatchres.dllThe specified module could not be found
Then locate the program shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
If the shortcut does not show the full path, select Open file location. You can also right-click the executable, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab for the product name and version.
Do not assume the program is AutoCAD 2004 solely because of the filename. AutoCAD LT and vertical products can use different files even when they come from the same release period.
Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
Reported listings for this file are not consistent across all sources, so do not rely on a download page’s architecture label. Check the installed application instead:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details and record the product information.
- If the program is very old, assume it may be a 32-bit application until its original documentation or installer confirms otherwise.
A 32-bit Autodesk application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its files must still come from the matching product build. Copying a similarly named DLL from another Autodesk edition can create additional dependency or startup errors.

Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the safest first step because it restores missing or altered product files without asking you to find individual DLLs.
For products using the classic Windows installer:
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Modify or Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same shortcut that previously failed.
On some older systems, open Control Panel, select Programs and Features, right-click the Autodesk product, and choose Change or Repair.
A successful repair normally means that the application opens without the missing-file message. If the same error returns, the repair source may be incomplete, the installation may be too damaged, or the application may have a missing dependency.
If Repair is unavailable
Some Autodesk installation frameworks do not provide a Repair option. In that case:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Back up custom templates, profiles, plot styles, plug-ins, and other personal settings.
- Confirm that you have the required Autodesk account credentials or original installation media.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the exact product, release, platform, and language from the original source.
Do not uninstall first if you cannot confirm that you have legitimate installation media or access to the product account.
Fix 2: Reinstall from an official Autodesk source
If the original installer is available, use it rather than replacing one file manually. A full reinstall restores the application’s file set and preserves the relationships between the executable, resource DLLs, and dependencies.
For an Autodesk product available through an account:
Rank #3
- Sign in to your Autodesk account.
- Open All Products and Services.
- Select the exact product.
- Choose the correct release, platform, and language.
- Select Install, Download, or Direct download.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Restart the computer after installation.
- Test the original application shortcut.
If the old product is not listed, use the original DVD, deployment package, company archive, or another legitimate source supplied by the software owner. Avoid mixing files from a newer AutoCAD release or a different Autodesk edition.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file after an update, restoration, or scan. Restore a file only when you can verify that it came from a legitimate Autodesk installation.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent events for the Autodesk installation folder or
acdchatchres.dll. - Open the event details.
- Confirm that the detected path belongs to the Autodesk product you installed.
- If the installer and product source are trusted, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Run the Autodesk repair process afterward so the installer can replace the file correctly.
- Start the application again.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk. If the event identifies an unknown download or an unexpected folder, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the Autodesk product from a legitimate source instead.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine action may no longer appear. If the file is absent and no event is available, repair or reinstall the product rather than searching for a replacement DLL.
Fix 4: Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites pages can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong Autodesk release
- The wrong language or architecture
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A file that only hides the original installation damage
Even if copying the file beside the executable makes the first message disappear, the application may fail later because other files are missing or mismatched. Never place an unverified copy in System32 or SysWOW64, and do not overwrite a working Autodesk file with one from another computer.

Fix 5: Check compatibility on Windows 10 or Windows 11
A very old Autodesk program may be damaged, but it may also be unsupported by the Windows version currently installed. Autodesk states that most products from 2015 and earlier are not compatible with Windows 10, and many older products are not guaranteed on Windows 11.
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the suggested test.
- Launch the application when prompted.
- If it works, save the recommended settings.
You can also select Run this program in compatibility mode for and test an appropriate older Windows version, but compatibility mode cannot supply missing Autodesk files or make an unsupported installer reliable.
If the application starts only intermittently, check whether a third-party plug-in, custom shortcut, file association, or permissions issue is involved. Test the main Autodesk executable directly from its installation folder.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
acdchatchres.dll is not known to be a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker is unlikely to restore this particular Autodesk DLL. Use these commands when other Windows applications also fail, Windows components behave incorrectly, or the problem began with broader system corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application again.
Do not close the administrator window while either command is running. If DISM reports that it cannot repair the component store, note the exact message and return to repairing or reinstalling the Autodesk product. These commands do not replace an application-specific DLL from Autodesk.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies; its repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the affected Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 7: Consider System Restore after a recent change
If the application worked recently and the error followed a driver, cleanup, update, or software change, System Restore may return system files, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. It does not replace personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Finish to begin the restore.
After Windows restarts, test the application. If the file is still missing, repair or reinstall the Autodesk product.

A graphics driver does not normally supply acdchatchres.dll. Do not make driver replacement the primary fix unless the application also shows display corruption, crashes, device errors, or a recent driver change.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the need to reinstall Autodesk when the application file is missing.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 acdchatchres.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components. A resource-only DLL generally contains application resources rather than a self-registration routine.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Registration cannot recreate a deleted file, repair a damaged Autodesk installation, or provide a missing dependency. An error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found” is expected for a DLL that was never designed to be registered.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Check these items in order:
- Confirm that you are launching the intended Autodesk executable, not an obsolete shortcut.
- Verify that the installed product matches the original edition and release.
- Check whether antivirus immediately quarantines the restored file.
- Temporarily test without third-party Autodesk plug-ins.
- Check permissions on the Autodesk installation folder.
- Try the main executable directly instead of opening a DWG file.
- Record whether the error names
acdchatchres.dllor another missing dependency. - Check application logs and Windows Event Viewer for a related fault.
- Test the product under a supported Windows environment if the software is legacy.
- Contact Autodesk or the organization that supplied the software with the product name, release, Windows version, full error text, installation path, and quarantine status.
FAQ
Is acdchatchres.dll a Windows file?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with an Autodesk application and should normally be restored through that application’s installer.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The exact product is not confirmed by an official Autodesk file manifest. AutoCAD 2004 is a plausible release-era match because it used release number 16.0, but related AutoCAD-based products may also contain it.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Third-party metadata reports a 32-bit DLL, but listings are not consistent. Verify the architecture and build through the installed application or original media rather than trusting a replacement download.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShould I copy it into System32?
No. The file belongs with the Autodesk application that uses it. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create mismatched-file problems and does not repair the installation.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no verified evidence that those runtimes supply this DLL. Repair the Autodesk product first. Investigate a runtime only if the application’s own installer or error logs identify that runtime as missing.
Why does the message say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency of acdchatchres.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible with the application build. Repairing the complete installation is safer than repeatedly replacing the named DLL.
What information should I give support?
Provide the exact Autodesk product and release, Windows version, complete error text, executable path, installation folder, whether the file was quarantined, and what happened immediately before the error appeared.
