“acdsee.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed because acdsee.dll was not found,” and “This application failed to start because acdsee.dll was not found” all point to the same basic problem: a program is trying to load an old plug-in that Windows cannot find or cannot use.
The 60-second answer
acdsee.dll is not a normal Windows component. It is identified as ACDSee Plug-In for ATI Remote Wonder, an old 32-bit application plug-in associated with ACDSee and ATI Technologies.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error, then repair or reinstall that exact ACDSee or ATI Remote Wonder software from its original installer or an official legacy-support source. Do not download a loose copy of acdsee.dll and place it in System32. That commonly creates a second problem instead of repairing the first one.
If the error appeared after antivirus software removed the file, inspect Microsoft Defender Protection History before reinstalling anything. If the dialog appears when Windows starts but does not name ACDSee or ATI software, you may be dealing with a stale startup entry left behind after an incomplete uninstall.

What is acdsee.dll?
acdsee.dll is described in public file metadata as an ACDSee Plug-In for ATI Remote Wonder. ATI Remote Wonder was an older Windows remote-control product that used application plug-ins to control compatible software.
That makes acdsee.dll an application component, not a Microsoft runtime and not a standard Windows DLL. It should not normally be treated like a missing DirectX file, Visual C++ library, or protected Windows system file.
Public metadata also describes the known file as a Win32, or 32-bit, DLL associated with ATI Technologies. Those details come from third-party file records rather than a current ACDSee or AMD product catalog, so use them as identification clues rather than as proof that every file with this name is legitimate.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. There is no reliable reason to assume that C:WindowsSystem32 is the correct location.
Why Windows reports the error
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| ACDSee was damaged or partially removed | Repair or reinstall the same ACDSee version |
| ATI Remote Wonder or related ATI software was uninstalled | Restore the matching legacy ATI package, or remove the obsolete integration |
| Antivirus quarantined the plug-in | Verify the original path and publisher, then restore only if legitimate |
| An old startup entry still launches removed software | Disable or remove the obsolete application cleanly |
| The wrong DLL architecture or version was supplied | Reinstall the application that originally provided it |
| A suspicious or modified DLL is being loaded | Scan the computer and reinstall from a trusted source |
The exact program that calls acdsee.dll cannot be established from the filename alone. A legacy ACDSee installation is a likely caller, but ATI Remote Wonder software, an ATI multimedia-control integration, or a leftover startup item may be responsible.
A current ACDSee product may not use this plug-in. If a modern application is displaying the error, check whether an old shortcut, startup task, shell extension, or unrelated legacy program is actually launching it.
First, identify the program requesting the file
Do this before copying files or changing the registry.

Read the complete message and note:
- The executable name, if shown
- The folder path
- Whether the error appears when launching ACDSee
- Whether it appears immediately after signing in to Windows
- Whether it began after uninstalling ATI software or an older ACDSee version
If the dialog names an executable, that program is the starting point for repair.
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field and Start in folder.
- Use that folder when checking for the original application installation.
Do not assume that a shortcut labelled ACDSee points to the newest installed version. Multiple ACDSee versions can coexist, and an old shortcut may still launch a removed or damaged installation.
Check Startup apps
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Task Manager.
- Choose Startup apps.
- Look for ACDSee, ATI Remote Wonder, ATI multimedia software, remote-control utilities, or an entry with a missing path.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a stale startup entry is a diagnostic step. If the error stops, you have identified the trigger. The clean long-term fix is to uninstall the obsolete application or reinstall it and remove it properly.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A copy inside an ACDSee or ATI application directory is more plausible than a copy in a random temporary folder or a Windows system directory. A filename alone does not prove that a DLL is safe.
Fix 1: Repair ACDSee from Windows
If the error appears when launching an older ACDSee installation, try Windows’ repair option first.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for ACDSee.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching installation.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same ACDSee shortcut again.
If the program opens without the DLL message, the repair restored or reconnected the required application files.
The repair option is not available for every desktop program. If there is no Advanced options entry or no Repair button, continue with a reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact ACDSee version
Reinstalling the product that supplied the plug-in is safer than replacing the DLL manually because the installer can restore related files, dependencies, shortcuts, and configuration.
Before removing ACDSee, back up any catalogs, databases, presets, saved searches, and other personal application data that you need.
Then:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected ACDSee version.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the same licensed version from ACDSee’s official legacy-download area or your original installation media.
- Run the installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if a normal launch fails.
- Start ACDSee from its newly installed shortcut.
Use the same product generation when possible. Installing a current ACDSee release is not guaranteed to restore a legacy ATI Remote Wonder plug-in, and public current plug-in listings do not confirm that modern ACDSee versions include acdsee.dll.
If the error remains after reinstalling, check whether the dialog is actually naming a different executable. You may have repaired ACDSee while a stale ATI startup item is still producing the message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 3: Restore the matching ATI Remote Wonder software
If the error began after removing ATI software, the missing component may belong to the old ATI Remote Wonder integration rather than the main ACDSee installation.

Use original ATI installation media or an authentic AMD legacy-support archive. Current Radeon graphics drivers should not be expected to contain acdsee.dll. AMD’s current support material also warns that older products may have limited support on newer Windows releases.
Proceed carefully:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for ATI Remote Wonder, ATI Multimedia, or another matching legacy ATI entry.
- Record the installed product name and version if listed.
- If the software is still installed, try its own repair option or reinstall from the original media.
- If it was removed, obtain the matching legacy package from an authentic source.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program that originally produced the error.
Compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11 may be limited for this old software. If the only remaining trigger is an obsolete remote-control feature that you no longer use, removing its startup entry may be safer than forcing an unverified DLL into the operating system.
If you need to update a graphics or legacy device driver, use Device Manager only for hardware that Windows still identifies:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update driver only when a compatible driver is available.
- Restart Windows.
A graphics-driver update is not a direct repair for acdsee.dll.
Manually hunting through old driver packages and matching hardware IDs can take considerable time, especially when several legacy drivers appear plausible. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show what needs attention; the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required when reinstalling ACDSee is the real fix.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Security software may quarantine a DLL if it is suspicious, modified, or located somewhere unexpected. Do not immediately disable Defender or approve the file based only on its name.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection related to
acdsee.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
- If the file came from a legitimate ACDSee or ATI installation and you can verify its publisher and signature, follow Microsoft’s restore or allow instructions.
- If the file came from a download archive, temporary folder, or unknown location, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the application from a trusted source instead.
Microsoft warns that allowing a file back onto the device can expose the computer if the file is malicious. If Defender repeatedly removes the DLL after a fresh installation, run a full scan rather than repeatedly restoring it.

Sometimes the original application has already been removed, but Windows continues trying to launch one of its components.
Start with Task Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the entry that points to ACDSee, ATI software, or a nonexistent folder.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the error no longer appears.
Also check scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks associated with the old application.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before changing it.
- Disable only a task that clearly points to the removed software.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random registry entries or scheduled tasks because they contain a familiar filename. Back up important data first, and remove only entries that you can tie to the obsolete application.
Fix 6: Run Windows repair commands only for wider system problems
acdsee.dll is a third-party application plug-in, so System File Checker is not expected to recreate it. Run these commands when Windows also has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, repeated system errors, or corrupted protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows. If Windows reports that it repaired files, test the affected application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing plug-in still needs to be repaired through ACDSee or ATI software.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely repairs an application-owned DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of broader repair issues and the full version performs the repair, but it is not required for this file; reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when the program itself is missing its plug-in.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only when appropriate
System Restore can help if acdsee.dll worked previously and disappeared after a recent software change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
- Let Windows restart and complete the operation.
System Restore is not a targeted DLL installer. It may remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point, so use it only when the timing is clear and you have a suitable restore point.
Why downloading acdsee.dll is a bad first fix
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- A wrong version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An unsigned or modified file
- A file with missing dependencies
- Malware using a familiar filename
- A DLL that does not match the calling application
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder can also make troubleshooting harder. A 32-bit application may need its own 32-bit plug-in beside the application executable, not a file placed in a Windows system directory.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft does not document acdsee.dll as a DLL that should be registered this way.
Running commands such as these without knowing that the file supports self-registration is unlikely to restore the plug-in:
regsvr32 acdsee.dll
A registration error does not mean the file is missing from Windows. It may simply mean the DLL is an application plug-in that was never designed for manual registration.
What about Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Do not install runtimes as the primary response to an acdsee.dll message. The file is not identified as a Microsoft runtime.
Install or repair a runtime only if the error also names that runtime or another dependency, or if the affected application’s official requirements specifically call for it. Otherwise, repair the application that originally supplied acdsee.dll.
Windows Features are similarly not a direct fix. Enabling legacy components will not recreate an ACDSee plug-in.

How to handle architecture problems
The available file metadata identifies the known acdsee.dll as a 32-bit Windows DLL. That matters because:
- A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications.
- A 32-bit application generally needs the correct 32-bit plug-in.
- A random 64-bit DLL cannot replace a required 32-bit DLL.
- Moving a 32-bit application DLL into a system directory does not solve an application compatibility problem.
The reliable way to obtain the correct architecture is to reinstall the exact application version that needs the file. Do not judge compatibility by filename, file size, or the folder name alone.
When the error persists
Collect these details before contacting ACDSee or deciding to remove the old software:
- The full error text
- The executable named in the dialog
- The executable’s complete path
- Your Windows version
- The ACDSee version, if known
- Whether ATI Remote Wonder is installed
- Whether Defender quarantined the file
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only when launching a program
- The result of repairing or reinstalling the application
- Whether the file exists in the original application folder
If the error appears only at startup and the old software is no longer needed, disabling its orphaned startup entry and uninstalling the obsolete component may be the correct repair. Restoring a legacy DLL is not always necessary.
FAQ
Is acdsee.dll a Windows file?
No. It is identified as an old ACDSee plug-in associated with ATI Remote Wonder. It should not be assumed to belong in System32.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is acdsee.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. A legitimate old plug-in and a malicious file can use the same name. Check the file path, publisher, digital signature, Defender history, and the application that installed it.
Will a modern Radeon driver restore it?
There is no basis to assume that it will. acdsee.dll is an old application integration, not a normal modern graphics-driver component.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. regsvr32 is appropriate only for DLLs designed to expose a registration entry point. Reinstalling the application is the proper first repair.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not for this error alone. Install a runtime only when the dialog or the application documentation identifies it as a separate missing dependency.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Only if you can prove that both computers use the same original application version, architecture, installation path, and legitimate signed file. Reinstalling the application is safer and also restores related dependencies.
Why does the error appear when Windows starts?
A stale ACDSee or ATI startup entry may still be launching after the original software was removed. Check Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler, then disable only entries tied to the obsolete program.
What is the safest final fix?
Identify the calling executable, then repair or reinstall the exact ACDSee or ATI Remote Wonder software that requested acdsee.dll. Avoid loose DLL downloads and do not place the file in System32 as a first-line repair.
