If Windows reports that lpdsvc.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program or service shows the error? Record the executable name and its full path.
- When does it happen? Check whether the message appears during startup, while enabling a Windows feature, when starting a printer service, or only when opening an unrelated application.
- Do you use LPR or LPD printing? This matters because LPD is an optional Windows printing component.
- Which Windows edition is affected? Windows client and Windows Server install LPD differently.
- Is the system 32-bit or 64-bit? Open Settings → System → About and check System type.
- What is the complete error? Typical variants include “lpdsvc.dll is missing,” “lpdsvc.dll was not found,” “Error loading lpdsvc.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.”
The complete message, named executable, and any related Event Viewer entry help distinguish a missing Windows component from an application that is reporting a dependent-module failure incorrectly.

What lpdsvc.dll does
lpdsvc.dll has the description Lpd Service and is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It implements the Windows TCP/IP print server service for LPD or LPR clients.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
LPD allows UNIX or other LPR clients to send print jobs to printers shared through a Windows print server. Windows also includes related lpr and lpq commands for sending files to an LPD service and querying a print queue. Microsoft describes this architecture in its Print Services documentation.

This file is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET runtime file
- A general-purpose game DLL
- A file that every Windows installation must contain
Depending on the Windows release and installed features, the file is normally managed under the Windows directory. A 64-bit system may have a copy associated with C:WindowsSystem32 and a 32-bit copy associated with C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not assume that a particular path, version, size, or hash is correct without checking the affected Windows build.
Is lpdsvc.dll supposed to be installed?
Not necessarily. LPD is an optional printing capability. A computer that has never enabled LPD may not contain the file, and that absence alone does not prove that Windows is damaged.
On Windows Server, LPD is provided through the Print and Document Services role as the LPD Service role service. On supported Windows client editions, it is commonly associated with the optional feature named:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Printing-Foundation-LPDPrintService
Do not enable LPD simply because an unrelated application displays a DLL error. First determine whether the machine actually needs to receive LPR print jobs or provide an LPD print queue.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file was previously present, Windows reports a component-store problem, or a feature installation failed.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using the repaired component store.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run these commands one at a time:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for each command to finish. The scan may take some time.
- After
RestoreHealthcompletes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
The essential sequence is DISM /RestoreHealth followed by sfc /scannow. Microsoft documents this process in its guide to fixing Windows Update and component corruption, and the SFC command reference explains the file-checking behavior.
Check the result
SFC normally reports one of these outcomes:
- Did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect protected-file corruption.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and retry the action that produced the error.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Continue with the repair-source procedure below.
- Could not perform the requested operation: Restart into normal Windows and run the scan again from an elevated Command Prompt.
If the error remains after a successful repair, the problem may be the optional LPD feature, an application installation, or a dependent module rather than lpdsvc.dll itself.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows issues involved and show what needs attention, while its repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the official repair path.
Fix 2: Enable LPD only if you use LPR printing
If the missing component is needed by an LPR printer or a Windows print server, reinstall or enable the LPD feature instead of copying the DLL manually.
Confirm the feature name
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Get-Features /Format:Table
- Look for a feature containing
LPDorPrinting-Foundation-LPDPrintService.
Feature names and availability vary by Windows edition and release. If the feature is listed as disabled, enable it from an elevated PowerShell window:

- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-Foundation-LPDPrintService -All
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the printer or Windows feature again.
You can also use the graphical path on supported client editions:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for LPD.
- Select LPD Print Service.
- Select Next, then Install.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
If the feature is not listed, do not substitute a similarly named package or download lpdsvc.dll. The edition or release may not provide that feature through the client interface.
Windows Server
On Windows Server, open Server Manager and use Add Roles and Features:
- Select Manage.
- Select Add Roles and Features.
- Continue through the wizard until Server Roles.
- Expand Print and Document Services.
- Select the LPD-related service when it is available.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart if requested.
- Test the LPR client and print queue.
The exact role availability depends on the Windows Server edition. Microsoft lists LPD under its Windows Server edition and role-service information.
Recommended Free Tools
If the LPD feature installs successfully but the DLL error remains, run DISM and SFC again. A failed feature installation can indicate component-store corruption.
Fix 3: Check Windows Update and pending restarts
A failed update, interrupted restart, or incomplete optional-feature installation can leave a Windows component incomplete.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Check Windows Update again after restarting.
- Retry the LPD feature installation or the application that showed the error.
If the problem began immediately after a particular update, record the update name and check Microsoft’s release-health information before removing it. Do not uninstall an update solely because the filename appeared in an error message.
On Windows Server, also check whether the failure affects only the LPD service after an update. Microsoft documents an example of an update-related LPD service problem, but that incident does not explain every lpdsvc.dll error.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software may quarantine a modified system file. Malware or a previous malware cleanup may also delete or replace a Windows component.
Review protection history
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
lpdsvc.dll, the LPD service, or the application that reported the error.
Do not restore the file merely because the name looks familiar. Restore a quarantined file only when its Microsoft publisher, Windows location, and detection details have been verified. If you restore it, run DISM and SFC afterward so Windows can validate the component.

Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. If you suspect an active infection or tampering that a normal scan cannot remove, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area.
A security scan can identify a threat, but it does not replace Windows component repair. Use DISM and SFC afterward.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 5: Verify the file location and Microsoft signature
If a file named lpdsvc.dll exists, verify where it is before trusting it.
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the Windows drive for
lpdsvc.dll. - Right-click each result and select Properties.
- Check the Location field.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
The file’s location should be consistent with a Windows-managed component. A copy found only inside a game, download folder, temporary directory, or unfamiliar application folder deserves additional investigation.
A valid-looking filename is not proof of authenticity. A malicious file can use the same name. Conversely, a missing digital-signature tab does not by itself identify the cause, because the verification details can vary by Windows component and build. Use Microsoft servicing to restore the correct copy rather than replacing the file by hand.
Do not rely on a historical version or size as a universal answer. Microsoft has documented different x86 and x64 builds for particular Windows releases, but those values are not current specifications for every installation.
Fix 6: Repair the application that displays the error
If lpdsvc.dll appears only when launching one third-party program, the application may be identifying the dependency incorrectly. The real failure could involve another module, a damaged application installation, or an incorrect DLL search path.
First record the exact executable:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the path shown in Target.
- Note the application name and installed version as shown in Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
Then repair the application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
If there is no repair option, uninstall and reinstall the program using its official installer or its original publisher. For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification or repair feature before reinstalling the whole game.
Do not install a generic DLL package for an application that does not actually use the Windows LPD service. Reinstalling the specific application is the definitive fix when its own files or configuration are damaged.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related printer driver
A printer driver normally does not provide lpdsvc.dll, but a damaged printer installation can trigger a service or feature error at the same time. If the problem began after changing printers, ports, or print-server settings, inspect the printer installation.

Remove and reinstall the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Install the printer again using the supported connection method.
For a print server, confirm that the server address, queue name, and protocol match the client configuration. Do not switch to LPR merely to suppress a missing-DLL message.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Other devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain one through Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not use a printer driver package as a substitute for lpdsvc.dll.
Manually checking each printer, chipset, and network driver can mean hunting versions and guessing which device is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation through its full version is optional and not required to repair lpdsvc.dll.
Should you run regsvr32 lpdsvc.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the required registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. It is intended for applicable COM or ActiveX components, not every DLL on a Windows system. Microsoft explains the command’s syntax and limitations in its regsvr32 reference and its documentation for DllRegisterServer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRunning:
regsvr32 lpdsvc.dll
may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” It will not repair the Windows component store, install the LPD feature, or recreate the service.
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Features, or Windows Server role management instead.
Why downloading lpdsvc.dll is unsafe
Do not download lpdsvc.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
A downloaded file may have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- An invalid or forged signature
- Incorrect permissions
- Malware or unwanted code
- Missing dependent files
Even a file that appears to load can leave Windows servicing inconsistent or hide the actual cause. There is no legitimate standalone lpdsvc.dll redistributable package.

- Restart Windows and run Windows Update again.
- Confirm that the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build match the repair source.
- Use matching installation media.
- Identify the media drive letter, such as

After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart.
If the repair still fails, review:

You can also:
- Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- Remove and reinstall the failed optional feature.
- Perform an in-place Windows repair installation while preserving personal files and applications when supported.
- Back up important data before considering a clean installation.
A clean reinstall should be the final step, not the first response to a missing optional DLL.

Is LPD still the right printing method?
LPD remains available on some Windows editions and releases, but it is a legacy printing protocol. Microsoft describes LPD support as optional, and current Microsoft guidance identifies the protocol as deprecated.
For a new deployment, prefer IPP or another currently supported printing method when the printer and environment support it. Keep LPD enabled only when an existing UNIX, network, or legacy printing workflow genuinely requires it. Microsoft’s Print Services specification provides the protocol context.
FAQ
Is lpdsvc.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component named Lpd Service and is associated with the TCP/IP Print Server or LPD printing service.
Is lpdsvc.dll required on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer?
No. LPD is optional, so a computer that never installed or enabled the feature may not contain the file.
Does enabling LPD always fix the error?
No. Enable LPD only when the computer actually uses LPR or LPD printing. An unrelated application may be reporting a different dependency problem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Another computer may have a different Windows build, edition, architecture, permissions, or servicing state. Restore the component through Windows servicing or matching installation media.
Can I fix this with regsvr32?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points. It does not install or repair the LPD service.
What if the error says “The specified module could not be found”?
That message may mean a dependency of the named program could not load, not that lpdsvc.dll itself is absent. Record the executable path, check Event Viewer, repair the application, and run DISM and SFC.
What should I do if the file was quarantined?
Review the detection in Windows Security, verify the file’s Microsoft signature and expected Windows location, scan for malware, and then repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Do not restore an arbitrary replacement file.
Is a 32-bit copy different from a 64-bit copy?
Windows can use different system paths for 64-bit and 32-bit components. Do not mix copies between System32 and SysWOW64; let Windows servicing restore the correct architecture.
What details should I provide to a technician?
Provide the complete error text, the program or service name, its full executable path, Windows edition and architecture, whether LPD printing is used, recent update or antivirus events, and relevant entries from Event Viewer or CBS.log.
