lttwn13n.dll is a legacy LEADTOOLS component used for TWAIN scanner support, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, repair or reinstall the application that originally installed it rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
The file is associated with LEAD Technologies’ Win32 imaging toolkit. Its LTTWN library provides TWAIN support, and the 13 in the name strongly suggests an older LEADTOOLS build. The exact application cannot be identified from the filename alone, but documented deployments include IBM Rational Rose RealTime and Kofax FraudOne.

What the lttwn13n.dll error means
You may see a message similar to one of these:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because
lttwn13n.dllwas not found.” - “This application has failed to start because
lttwn13n.dllwas not found.” - “
lttwn13n.dllis either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” - “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library
lttwn13n.dll.” - “Error loading
lttwn13n.dll.” - “The specified module could not be found.”
The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the way the application attempted to load the library.

A missing-file message does not always mean the named file is the only problem. Windows can name lttwn13n.dll when one of its companion libraries or another dependency is missing. A damaged file, a quarantined file, a mismatched LEADTOOLS version, or an incompatible 32-bit application can produce similar errors.

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes for identification.
1. Identify the program that owns the file
Look at the title bar or full error message. The application that appears immediately before the error is usually the program that needs repair.
If the message does not identify it:
- Close the error.
- Start the affected shortcut again.
- Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field and note the executable path.
- Open the executable’s containing folder and look for related files beginning with
lt, including files such asltkrn13n.dllorltfil13n.dll.
Do not assume that every copy of lttwn13n.dll belongs to the same product. The file has been documented inside more than one legacy application, and each product may require its own matching collection of LEADTOOLS files.
Fix 1: Repair the application from Windows
Repair is the safest first step because it restores the application’s own files and preserves its installed configuration when the option is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTime needed: 5 to 20 minutes.
Windows 11 and newer Windows 10 settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the
lttwn13n.dllerror. - Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available, check for Modify, Change, Verify files, or a similar maintenance option in the application’s entry.
Traditional desktop programs
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected program in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the original shortcut.
A successful repair should restore lttwn13n.dll beside the application or inside its private runtime directory. It does not normally place this file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If repair completes but the error remains, continue with a complete reinstall. A repair routine may preserve a damaged private runtime or may not replace files that were removed outside the installer.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus protection can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Do not immediately disable protection or restore the file without checking its origin.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the affected program or its installation directory.
- Record the detection name, original path, publisher information, and available signing details.
Only restore or allow the file when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the trusted application’s original installer.
- The original path matches the application’s installation directory.
- The application vendor confirms that the file is required.
- A current security scan does not identify the installer or surrounding files as unsafe.
If the file came from an unknown source, leave it quarantined. Remove the application and reinstall it from the original publisher, enterprise software share, or original installation media.
Microsoft warns that allowing a falsely identified file can expose the computer to malware. If restoring the file makes the error disappear only temporarily, the application may be damaged or the installation source may be untrustworthy.
Fix 3: Reinstall the owning application
For this particular DLL, reinstalling the parent program is usually more reliable than replacing one file. The program may need several version-matched LEADTOOLS libraries, not just lttwn13n.dll.
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the installer.
Before uninstalling, make sure you have the original installer, product media, license details, and any required activation information.

- Run the application’s original installer as an administrator.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Keep the default installation directory unless the product documentation requires another location.
- Start the application after setup finishes.
For older software installed from optical media or an enterprise share, use that product’s own installation source. Do not copy lttwn13n.dll from another computer, another LEADTOOLS application, or a different release of the same product.
After reinstalling, check the application folder for the restored DLL and its related files. The file may be in a private bin, runtime, or product directory rather than beside the main shortcut target.

- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for only if the software vendor’s instructions require it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing LEADTOOLS file by itself. It only helps the older installer run. The application vendor remains the correct source for the runtime files.
Fix 4: Restore the complete matching LEADTOOLS runtime
A 32-bit application needs the compatible 32-bit LEADTOOLS files. The description associated with lttwn13n.dll is “LEADTOOLS(r) DLL for Win32,” and there is no authoritative evidence here for a 64-bit variant of this exact file.
That does not mean the file belongs in SysWOW64. Windows directory names are confusing:
System32contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.- Neither directory is the normal home for an application-private LEADTOOLS DLL.
Restore the file through the affected application’s installer instead. A wrong copy may cause a different error, including:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Bad image.”
These messages usually indicate a mismatched build, an incompatible architecture, a damaged file, or a missing companion dependency.
Do not mix lttwn13n.dll from one product with ltkrn, ltfil, or image-format libraries from another product. Version-numbered LEADTOOLS files are commonly intended to work as a group.
Fix 5: Check the application’s prerequisites
Some legacy programs depend on older Microsoft runtimes or other components documented by the application vendor. Do not assume that installing a current Visual C++ package supplies lttwn13n.dll; it does not. This file is a LEADTOOLS library.
If the application installer lists a Visual C++ prerequisite:

- Install the redistributable architecture that matches the application.
- Keep older redistributable versions already used by other programs.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 redistributable even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft provides current and legacy Visual C++ redistributables through its official documentation.
Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Do not enable random Windows components to fix a missing LEADTOOLS DLL. If the product’s documentation specifically requires a Windows feature:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Enable only the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application.
Enabling a feature cannot substitute for reinstalling the application’s private DLL set.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the error began with scanner hardware changes
LTTWN is associated with TWAIN support, so scanner software or a scanner driver may be involved in the application’s failure. A driver update will not normally recreate a missing lttwn13n.dll, but it can matter if the problem began after changing scanner hardware or its software.

- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Locate the scanner or related device.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the problem started immediately after an update, open the same dialog and select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Reconnect the scanner and test the application.
Use the scanner manufacturer’s official driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Avoid replacing the application’s LEADTOOLS files with scanner DLLs. They serve different roles.
When several devices have stale drivers, manually identifying the correct package can mean hunting through hardware IDs, model revisions, and vendor downloads. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention; the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for its missing LEADTOOLS DLL.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is a secondary step. lttwn13n.dll is not a Windows component, so system repair commands will not normally recreate it. They can help when Windows system corruption is preventing older applications from loading correctly.
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again only if Microsoft’s repair guidance recommends it. These commands do not justify downloading a replacement DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real issue is the application’s private runtime. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies during this manual repair process; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the program that shipped lttwn13n.dll is still the definitive solution.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software change.
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back system configuration and installed programs, but it does not remove personal files. It may not restore an application-private DLL if the application was separately removed or damaged afterward. If the program still fails, reinstall it from its original source.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. lttwn13n.dll is a runtime/support library, not a file that should normally be registered.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a general fix:
regsvr32 lttwn13n.dll
It may return an error saying that the module was loaded but the entry point could not be found. That does not mean the file needs a different registration command. It means registration is not applicable.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64, and do not download it from a random DLL website. An isolated replacement may be the wrong build, wrong architecture, unsigned, modified, or bundled with malware. It may also leave the application without other required LEADTOOLS files.
The safe sources are the affected application’s original publisher, its trusted enterprise deployment share, or its original installation media.
Causes of the error
| Likely cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or damaged application installation | Repair, then reinstall the application |
| File quarantined by security software | Verify provenance and restore only a trusted file |
| Wrong LEADTOOLS build | Restore the complete runtime from the application installer |
| Missing companion DLL or dependency | Reinstall the application and its documented prerequisites |
| Scanner or driver change | Repair the application and update the correct device driver |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM and SFC as a secondary step |
| Legacy software incompatibility | Use vendor guidance, compatibility settings, or a supported replacement |
A clean Windows installation will not recreate this file by itself. The product that shipped it must be reinstalled.
When the problem is really a missing dependency
If lttwn13n.dll is present but the program still fails, the named file may be only the first library in the loading chain. Other LEADTOOLS files, old C or C++ runtime components, or a scanner-related dependency may be missing.

FAQ
Is lttwn13n.dll a Windows file?
No. Available documentation identifies it as a third-party LEADTOOLS component from LEAD Technologies. It should not normally be expected in the Windows system directories.
What does LTTWN do?
It provides LEADTOOLS TWAIN support, which is used by software that communicates with scanners or other TWAIN imaging devices.
Which application installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the owner. Documented examples include IBM Rational Rose RealTime and Kofax FraudOne, but another legacy application may have installed the copy on your computer.
Is lttwn13n.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The file is identified as a Win32 LEADTOOLS DLL and should be treated as a legacy 32-bit application component. There is no authoritative evidence here for a 64-bit variant of this exact filename.
Can I download just the DLL?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. The application may require a matching set of LEADTOOLS libraries, and an arbitrary file may be malicious or incompatible. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Application-private DLLs normally remain beside the application or in its private runtime directory. Copying the file into a Windows system directory can create a second, mismatched copy and make future troubleshooting harder.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable install it?
No. Visual C++ packages may be required by an application dependency, but they do not supply the LEADTOOLS lttwn13n.dll file.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally, no. This is a runtime/support DLL, not necessarily a COM or ActiveX library that supports self-registration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?
Repair or reinstall the application. Windows may be unable to load the file because a companion LEADTOOLS DLL or another dependency is missing, or because the file does not match the application’s expected build.
What is the most reliable fix?
Identify the application that displays the error, use its built-in repair option, and reinstall it from the original publisher or installation media if repair fails. That restores the correct lttwn13n.dll and the rest of the runtime it needs.
