What acfieldres.dll is and the safest fix
acfieldres.dll is an Autodesk application file associated with AutoCAD components. It is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime file, DirectX file, or file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Do not download a loose copy of acfieldres.dll and copy it into a Windows folder. A downloaded file may have the wrong release, language resources, architecture, signature, or dependencies, and it does not repair the installation that originally lost the file.
Possible messages include:
FATAL ERROR: unable to load "AcFieldRes.dll".The program can't start because acfieldres.dll is missing from your computer.The code execution cannot proceed because acfieldres.dll was not found.acfieldres.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The exact wording depends on the Autodesk product and how Windows detected the failure.

Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the best first step for AutoCAD 2021 and earlier when the product still appears in the classic Windows program list.
- Close AutoCAD, DWG TrueView, and other Autodesk applications.
- Press the Windows key and type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows when it finishes.
- Launch the Autodesk product directly from the Start menu.
Repair restores missing product files. It is preferable to copying a replacement DLL because it restores files from the matching Autodesk installation and preserves the product’s expected folder structure.
If Repair fails
Repeat the same process, but select Reinstall instead of Repair. Reinstalling restores the product files and registry information from the original installation source.

After the reinstall, check whether the error has disappeared before changing anything else. If the same message remains, continue with the clean reinstall steps below rather than trying random DLL copies.
Fix 2: Reinstall AutoCAD or the affected Autodesk product
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
AutoCAD 2022 and later generally use an installer that does not provide the older Repair option. In that case, reinstall the product.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account using a browser.
- Download the exact product and release you are licensed to use.
- Run the official Autodesk installer.
- Restart Windows again, then launch the product directly.
The exact installation path for acfieldres.dll can vary with the Autodesk product, release, language, and installer. Do not assume that the file belongs in a Windows directory. A 32-bit PE file can also be part of a 64-bit application’s installation tree, so its bitness does not tell you to copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
If the normal uninstall leaves the same failure behind, use Autodesk’s clean-uninstall procedure. Remove the remaining Autodesk components specified by that procedure, restart Windows, and install a fresh copy. Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine an application file during or after installation. This is more likely when the file disappeared after an update, a security scan, or a cleanup operation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the Autodesk installation or
acfieldres.dll. - Do not restore the file automatically if the detection is unclear.
- Confirm that the Autodesk installation came from the official Autodesk installer.
- If the detection is demonstrably a false positive, restore the file according to your security software’s instructions.
- Run Autodesk Repair or reinstall the product afterward.
Repairing or reinstalling after a quarantine is safer than relying on a manually restored file because the installer can replace related files and validate the application’s complete set of resources.
If multiple unrelated files are disappearing, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate the system rather than replacing only acfieldres.dll.

A damaged Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable can contribute to related AutoCAD resource-DLL launch failures. It is not the normal first fix for a missing acfieldres.dll, but it is worth checking when the message also mentions a runtime DLL, an entry point, or a side-by-side configuration problem.
- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download the supported x64 package for a 64-bit Autodesk installation.
- Download the x86 package as well when the product or component is 32-bit, or when the error indicates an x86 dependency.
- Run each installer.
- Choose Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AutoCAD again.
Installing x64 does not replace every x86 dependency. Older applications may also require older Visual C++ runtimes side by side, so do not remove every existing runtime package as a cleanup experiment.
If the error is still specifically about acfieldres.dll, return to Autodesk Repair or reinstall. The Autodesk product remains the definitive source for this application file.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the Autodesk installer or repaired product again.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, resolve that Windows problem first. Do not keep running the Autodesk installer over an unfinished operating-system update.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
acfieldres.dll is an Autodesk file, so Windows System File Checker is not expected to recreate it. Use these commands when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, update failures, damaged built-in components, or several unrelated applications failing.
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Autodesk application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command substitutes for repairing or reinstalling AutoCAD.

A graphics driver problem can cause AutoCAD crashes, display failures, or startup instability, but it is not the usual explanation for a missing acfieldres.dll. Use this step when the problem began immediately after a graphics, chipset, storage, or Windows driver change.
Check drivers through Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics drivers.
- Expand Storage controllers, System devices, or another relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began directly after an update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong command
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 acfieldres.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry points used by COM or ActiveX components. A resource or application DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM server. Running the command may produce an entry-point or module error and will not restore a damaged Autodesk installation.
Repair or reinstall the owning Autodesk product instead.
