Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record:
- Which program fails: AutoCAD, an older Autodesk application, a DWG utility, or a third-party program using Autodesk ObjectDBX or an object enabler.
- When the error appears: at launch, when opening a drawing, after an update, or after uninstalling another Autodesk product.
- The complete message: note whether it says the file is missing, could not be loaded, is corrupted, or reports an entry point.
- The displayed file path: a path inside an Autodesk installation is important evidence. A copy in a temporary folder or an unrelated application directory may be a duplicate.
- Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Recent changes: record software removals, Autodesk updates, disk cleanup, antivirus detections, or copied program folders.
acge16.dll is an Autodesk ObjectDBX application library, not a Windows system file. If acge16.dll is missing, the safest repair is normally to repair or reinstall the Autodesk product that is requesting it.
What acge16.dll does
acge16.dll is associated with Autodesk ObjectDBX and older ObjectARX-based software. Autodesk applications and compatible DWG hosts use ObjectDBX technology to work with drawing objects and object-enabler components.

The file is generally reported as a 32-bit library. Catalogued copies have been reported with versions such as 22.0.0.86 and 22.2.54.0, with sizes of approximately 0.91 to 0.92 MB. Those values are reported metadata, not a guarantee that every legitimate installation has exactly the same version or size.

Understand the error before repairing anything
Different messages point to different problems.
“acge16.dll is missing” or “was not found”
This usually means the calling program could not find the library in the locations Windows searched. Common causes include:
- An incomplete Autodesk installation
- A failed update
- Uninstalling a related Autodesk product
- Antivirus quarantine
- Cleaning or moving application files
- Copying an Autodesk program folder from another computer
The correct response is to identify the application named by the dialog and repair that installation.
“The file could not be loaded” or “is missing or corrupted”
The file may be absent, damaged, blocked, or incompatible with another dependency. A file can exist on disk and still fail to load if it is the wrong build or if another required Autodesk library is missing.

“Entry Point Not Found”
An entry-point error is different from a missing-file error. It means the program found a DLL but could not find the function it expected inside it.
Autodesk has documented AutoCAD startup errors involving AcGe16.dll. Causes include an incorrect DLL version, a DLL copied to a non-default location, or a damaged installation. This often indicates a version mismatch or duplicate DLL rather than simple absence.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “Bad Image”
These messages commonly indicate that the file is damaged, incompatible with the application, the wrong architecture, or being loaded from an unintended location. Do not assume that replacing only acge16.dll will solve the problem. The surrounding Autodesk installation may also be mismatched.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
This is the fastest and most reliable fix when the affected product uses the classic Autodesk installer.
- Close AutoCAD and every other Autodesk application.
- Save any open work in other programs.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, locate the Autodesk product named by the error or the product you were using when the problem began.
- Select it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair when the Autodesk maintenance window appears.
- Follow the prompts until the operation finishes.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected program and repeat the action that produced the error.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair worked if the application starts normally and can perform the operation that previously failed. Check the original error path only as supporting evidence. Do not manually replace files if the program is working.
If Repair fails, return to Programs and Features, choose Uninstall/Change again, and select Reinstall if that option is available. Reinstalling is more thorough because it replaces the application files and dependencies.
Fix 2: Uninstall and reinstall through the current Autodesk installer
Some newer Autodesk installation experiences do not provide a Repair option. In that case, use the Autodesk Account or Autodesk Access to obtain the installer for the exact product and release already licensed for the computer.
- Close all Autodesk programs.
- Back up custom templates, profiles, scripts, plug-ins, and user-created files.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the product in Windows 10.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the Autodesk Account associated with the product, or open Autodesk Access.
- Download the installer for the same product and the appropriate release.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Restart Windows again after installation.
- Test the application before restoring optional plug-ins or copied customization files.
If the error returns only after a plug-in, object enabler, or customization is restored, that add-on may require a matching Autodesk release. Remove it again and obtain the version intended for the host application from its vendor.
Do not mix acge16.dll or other Autodesk files from different AutoCAD generations. The file may be present while the application still fails because the executable and its libraries no longer match.
Fix 3: Check the error path and duplicate DLLs
The path displayed in the error dialog helps identify which installation owns the problem.
A path under an Autodesk program directory is more credible than a copy under:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:Users<name>Downloads- A temporary folder
- An unrelated application’s directory
You can search without deleting anything:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, type
acge16.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Record every path found.
- Right-click each result, select Properties, and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
Do not delete all copies automatically. A legitimate legacy Autodesk installation may contain application-specific files. A duplicate becomes suspicious when it is outside the expected Autodesk directory, appeared after a manual copy, or conflicts with the path shown by the error.
If you have identified a demonstrably stray copy, record its full path and rename it rather than deleting it immediately. For example, change acge16.dll to acge16.dll.old, then repair the Autodesk product. If the program still fails, restore the original name or let the Autodesk installer replace the installation.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64. Those directories are not general-purpose locations for application DLLs, and placing an older Autodesk library there can create conflicts for other programs.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or suspicious DLL. A detection is not automatically a false positive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the Autodesk error began.
- Expand any detection that names
acge16.dll. - Record the original path and detection name.
- Do not restore the file merely because the filename matches.
- Update the Autodesk installation by repairing or reinstalling it from the official Autodesk installer.
Restore a quarantined file only when it is clearly inside a legitimate Autodesk installation and the detection has been reviewed or cleared by your security administrator or Autodesk support. After restoration, repair or reinstall the product rather than relying on the restored copy.
If the file came from a download, an unofficial archive, or a copied computer, leave it quarantined and perform a full security scan.
Fix 5: Confirm the 32-bit application context
A 32-bit DLL must be loaded by an application that expects that architecture. A 64-bit substitute cannot repair a 32-bit Autodesk dependency.
On Windows 64-bit, 32-bit applications commonly use files under their own program directories and may interact with Windows redirection rules. That does not mean you should manually move the DLL between System32 and SysWOW64.
To check the program architecture:
- Start the affected application if possible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns if needed.
- Enable Platform when that column is available.
- Note whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the program cannot start, use the product’s installation information or documentation. The more important match is between the executable, its Autodesk libraries, and any object enabler or plug-in. Installing a different architecture from an unrelated source is not a safe workaround.
Fix 6: Reinstall only the runtime named by the error
Visual C++ Redistributable packages can be relevant when the message also names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. They do not replace acge16.dll.

If a Microsoft runtime is explicitly named:
- Download the supported Visual C++ Redistributable package from Microsoft.
- Select the architecture required by the application. An older 32-bit Autodesk application may require the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Close running applications.
- Run the Microsoft installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application again.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because acge16.dll is missing. Use those components only when the error or Autodesk installation documentation identifies them as dependencies.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when there is wider corruption
SFC and DISM are not normal ways to restore acge16.dll. Windows does not own this Autodesk library, so SFC normally cannot recreate it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use these commands when Windows itself is showing broader problems, the Autodesk installer will not run, or other protected system files are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Autodesk repair or reinstall again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands can repair Windows component-store or protected system-file problems, but they do not make an unofficial Autodesk DLL legitimate.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of related Windows problems, while its repair is performed by the full version; reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application file.

A graphics or storage driver is not the usual cause of a missing acge16.dll, but driver problems can cause separate AutoCAD startup or display failures. Do not treat a driver update as a substitute for repairing the Autodesk installation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To check Windows updates:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Choose Properties and review Device status and Driver.

- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall a working device driver merely because acge16.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and repairing the Autodesk installation remains the direct fix for this DLL.
Fix 9: Check plug-ins and object enablers
An older third-party plug-in or object enabler may call an Autodesk library that the main application no longer supplies in the expected location.
Test the host application with custom add-ons disabled:
- Close the Autodesk program.
- Temporarily disable third-party plug-ins using the product’s add-in manager or startup settings.
- Start the application.
- Open a test drawing or perform the action that previously failed.
- If the error disappears, re-enable plug-ins one at a time.
- Identify the add-on that brings the error back.
- Reinstall that add-on from its vendor using a release intended for the exact host application.
Do not copy an acge16.dll file from another AutoCAD installation. ObjectDBX and ObjectARX components can depend on matching libraries, and mixing releases may turn a missing-file error into an entry-point error.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a COM registration entry point named DllRegisterServer. An ordinary native Autodesk runtime library does not necessarily export that function.
Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:
regsvr32 acge16.dll
It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not prove Windows is damaged. It means the file is not the type of self-registering COM library that regsvr32 expects.
Use the Autodesk installer to restore application files instead. Only register a DLL when the specific product documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.

When System Restore is reasonable
System Restore can be considered if the problem began immediately after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Review the available restore points.
- Select one created before the Autodesk failure began.
- Confirm which applications and drivers may be affected.
- Start the restore only after saving work.
System Restore is not the preferred first step and does not replace a clean Autodesk reinstall. Do not use it to restore an unknown DLL downloaded from elsewhere.
What to collect before contacting support
If repair and reinstall do not solve the problem, collect:
- The Autodesk product name and release
- The exact executable named in the error
- The complete error text
- The full displayed path for
acge16.dllorAcGe16.dll - Whether the message says missing, bad image, could not load, or entry point
- Windows edition and system type
- Recent uninstall, update, cleanup, or antivirus events
- A list of installed plug-ins and object enablers
- Installation logs, if available
- The results of the Autodesk repair or reinstall
This information helps distinguish a missing file from a duplicate, architecture mismatch, damaged dependency, or plug-in problem.

Is acge16.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk ObjectDBX and older Autodesk-based applications. Windows Update and SFC are not expected to supply it.
Which programs use acge16.dll?
Older AutoCAD-generation software, ObjectDBX or ObjectARX-based applications, and some programs using Autodesk object-enabler technology may use it. The exact calling product must be identified from the error dialog and path.
Should I download acge16.dll from a DLL website?
No. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched build. It can also hide the real problem in the Autodesk installation. Use the official Autodesk installer, Autodesk Account, or Autodesk Access.
Should I put the file in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep application DLLs with the application unless Autodesk documentation for a specific legacy product explicitly requires another location.
The file exists, so why does the program still fail?
The application may be loading another copy, the file may be the wrong version, a dependent DLL may be missing, or a plug-in may target a different Autodesk release. An entry-point error especially suggests a version or API mismatch.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the error also identifies a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Visual C++ Redistributable does not replace acge16.dll.
Does regsvr32 acge16.dll fix the problem?
Normally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM DLLs, while this Autodesk application library is not normally repaired by registration.
What is the safest first action?
Identify the program and path in the error, then use Repair or Reinstall for the Autodesk product that owns the file. If that product uses a newer installer without Repair, uninstall and reinstall it through the official Autodesk installation channel.
