2. Run DISM again:

3. Choose Language & region.

Run DISM and SFC after making the change if the original error continues. Re-adding a layout does not replace the need to repair corrupted protected files.

Fix 4: Remove United Kingdom Extended if nobody needs it

You do not need to restore an unused layout merely because its file is mentioned in an error. If the layout is not required by you or another Windows user, remove it from the language settings.

On Windows 11:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Time & language.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. This is possible after malware removal, a false positive, or damage that made the file appear suspicious.

1. Open Start.
2. Type Windows Security.
3. Open the application.
4. Select Virus & threat protection.
5. Click Protection history.
6. Review entries involving kbdukx.dll.
7. Expand an entry to view its path and action.

Only consider restoring the file if all of the following are true:

• The path is the expected Windows system directory.

Fix 7: Check drivers only for wider keyboard problems

Why downloading the DLL is unsafe

Avoid DLL download repositories and random file-hosting pages. A downloaded file may have:

• Malware or unwanted code
• The wrong Windows build
• The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
• An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
• Incompatible language resources
• A name that was changed to imitate a Windows file

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can create additional loader errors and interfere with Windows servicing. It also leaves the original corruption unresolved.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known damaging change

If the problem began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup operation, update, antivirus action, or manual file replacement, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier state.

7. Allow Windows to restart.

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, Windows Update cannot complete, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, the component store may be seriously damaged.

Before proceeding:

• Back up important personal files.
• Record installed applications and recovery keys.
• Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
• Confirm the exact Windows edition and architecture.
• Keep the computer connected to reliable power.

Use Windows recovery options if Windows cannot start correctly. If Windows still runs but protected components remain damaged, an in-place repair installation can refresh Windows while preserving personal files and, depending on the selected options, installed applications. Follow Microsoft’s current installation instructions for the exact Windows version rather than using an image from an unknown source.

A clean installation is a last resort because it removes applications and can remove personal data if the disk is not backed up correctly.
