Identify the affected program
Write down the application named in the message. It may be AutoCAD, Revit, Desktop Connector, or another Autodesk product. Also note whether the message appears:
- when Windows starts;
- when the Autodesk application launches;
- while installing or updating;
- after an uninstall;
- after antivirus software reports a detection.
The filename alone does not prove which Autodesk product needs repair. Several Autodesk products can use shared files in the Autodesk Shared folder.
AutoCAD 2021 and earlier
Autodesk documents a repair option for these versions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select AutoCAD.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair or Reinstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AutoCAD again.
If the program starts normally and no DLL message returns, the repair restored the shared installation.
AutoCAD 2022 and later
Newer AutoCAD versions may not provide the older Repair option. Use the Autodesk product installer instead:
- Sign in to Autodesk Account.
- Open All Products and Services.
- Select the affected product and version.
- Choose Download, Install, Direct Download, or Custom Install, depending on what is available.
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
A full or direct-download installer is preferable when a cached setup is damaged or incomplete.
If reinstalling the product does not help, use Autodesk’s documented uninstall procedure for that product, then install it again from Autodesk Account. Do not manually delete files from the Autodesk Shared directory while other Autodesk products remain installed.

Fix 2: Resolve the Autodesk Error 4001 extraction failure
Autodesk documents an installer log entry that specifically names this file:
Error extracting file to C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk SharedAcSignCore16.dll errorCode: -1951596543
The visible installer message may say:
Install error: AutoCAD
The install couldn’t finish.
Error 4001
If your log contains this failure, the installer may be unable to overwrite an existing copy because it is locked, damaged, modified, or protected by permissions.

Rename the existing file
Only use this procedure when the Autodesk installer log identifies AcSignCore16.dll.
- Close AutoCAD, Revit, Desktop Connector, and every other Autodesk application.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open File Explorer.
- Paste this path into the address bar:
text
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk Shared
- Locate
AcSignCore16.dll. - Right-click it and select Rename.
- Change the name to:
text
AcSignCore16.dll.old
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Run the Autodesk installer as administrator.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Test the affected Autodesk application.
Renaming preserves the old file so it can be examined or removed later. Do not delete it blindly, and do not rename shared Autodesk files merely because their names look unfamiliar.

If Windows says the file is in use, restart again and retry before investigating which process has it open. Do not force-delete a shared file while another Autodesk product is running.
If Error 4001 continues
Check these items before running the installer again:
- Confirm that the system drive has free space.
- Make sure
C:AutodeskIMexists if the installer expects that location. - Confirm that
C:UsersPublicDocumentsexists. - Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Temporarily check whether antivirus or Windows controlled-folder protection blocked the installer.
- Close backup, synchronization, cleanup, and system-management utilities that may be locking the folder.
- Review the relevant log in
%TEMP%, especially a file named similar to:
text
Autodesk_RealDWG_Shared_<version>_install.log
Do not disable security protection permanently. If antivirus quarantined the original file, verify the detection and repair the Autodesk installation instead of replacing the file with a download.
Fix 3: Reinstall Autodesk Installation Services
Error 4001 can also involve damaged Autodesk Installation Services or its installer cache.
Use this procedure only if the Autodesk installation guidance for your product points to Autodesk Installation Services:
- Close Autodesk applications.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
text
C:Program FilesAutodeskAdODISV1
- Right-click
RemoveODIS.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the removal prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Autodesk Account and start the supported installation workflow again.
- Reinstall Autodesk Installation Services when prompted.
- Rerun the affected product installer as administrator.
Installer paths and package names can change between Autodesk releases. If the file is not present, do not download a similarly named executable from a third-party website. Use the current Autodesk installation workflow.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and permissions
A missing file is not always a deleted file. Antivirus software may quarantine it, or Windows may prevent the Autodesk installer from writing to the shared directory.

Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the Autodesk Shared folder or
AcSignCore16.dll. - Read the detection details before taking action.
Do not restore the file automatically. A historical file record or digital signature can help identify an Autodesk component, but it does not prove that every copy with this filename is trustworthy or compatible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the file is confirmed as an Autodesk file and was quarantined, use Autodesk’s installer to reinstall it. A downloaded replacement may have the wrong version, architecture, exports, dependencies, or signature.
Check folder access
Run the installer as administrator and ensure your Windows account has permission to install software. If the installer still cannot write to:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk Shared
the cause may be a permissions policy, security product, damaged folder, or another process holding the file open. Restart Windows and retry before changing ownership or broad folder permissions.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the affected Autodesk product
If the error began after an update, uninstall, failed installation, or disk cleanup, the shared RealDWG or Autodesk component may be incomplete.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to Autodesk Account.
- Download the same product and version required by your license or workflow.
- Run the installer as administrator.
For Revit update failures, another Autodesk application may have modified shared files. Close all Autodesk software, restart Windows, and retry the update. If the update still fails, use the rename procedure only when the update log identifies AcSignCore16.dll.
For Desktop Connector, the failure may be associated with the RealDWG Shared 2025 package. Repair or reinstall Desktop Connector through Autodesk’s supported installer rather than installing a separate DLL.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Do not choose a replacement based only on the filename.
Historical records identify both 32-bit and 64-bit variants of AcSignCore16.dll, while newer Autodesk installation logs refer to a 64-bit common-program-files location. The correct architecture depends on the Autodesk release and the application requesting the file.

A 32-bit application cannot use an incompatible 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot use an incompatible 32-bit build. Files from different Autodesk releases may also have different exports or dependencies.
The safe solution is to reinstall the Autodesk product that requested the file. Do not copy a file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not substitutes for the Autodesk Shared installation directory.
Fix 7: Update Windows and drivers only for broader system problems
acsigncore16.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager is not the normal repair path. Updating a graphics, chipset, storage, or printer driver will not normally recreate an Autodesk shared DLL.
Check drivers only if other applications are also crashing or Windows shows a separate device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through device categories and guessing which drivers are stale; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several unrelated programs fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or the Autodesk installer shows signs of system-level damage. They do not download or repair an Autodesk DLL directly.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
If Windows reports that it repaired files, test the Autodesk application. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall steps. SFC targets protected Windows files, not third-party Autodesk components.
Repeatedly running DISM and SFC will not replace AcSignCore16.dll.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing Autodesk runtime component is not normally repaired by registering it.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 acsigncore16.dll
unless Autodesk specifically documents that command for your product and version. If the file is missing, regsvr32 cannot recreate it. If the file is incompatible, registration will not correct its architecture or dependencies.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unreliable fixes:
- Downloading
acsigncore16.dllfrom a DLL archive or file-sharing site. - Copying the file into
System32,SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder. - Replacing a quarantined file with a random copy.
- Assuming every file with this name has the same version, size, hash, or bitness.
- Deleting shared Autodesk files while Revit, AutoCAD, Desktop Connector, or another Autodesk product is installed.
- Running registry cleaners to repair the error.
- Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as the primary fix. Those packages do not normally restore this Autodesk file.
Prevention
- Install Autodesk products from Autodesk Account.
- Keep Autodesk applications closed during updates.
- Do not interrupt an Autodesk installation.
- Leave sufficient free space on the system drive.
- Review antivirus quarantine when an Autodesk file disappears.
- Use the full or direct-download installer when a cached setup repeatedly fails.
- Keep the Autodesk Shared folder intact when removing one Autodesk product.
- Save the installer log whenever an update fails.
FAQ
Is acsigncore16.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. Autodesk documents it in the Autodesk Shared directory, and it is associated with Autodesk software.
Which applications use it?
Autodesk documents the shared component in AutoCAD-based products, Desktop Connector, and Revit update scenarios. It should not be assumed to belong exclusively to AutoCAD.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is the file safe?
A file identified as an Autodesk component in the expected Autodesk Shared directory may be legitimate, but the filename alone is not proof. Verify the location, publisher, and installation source. Reinstall it from Autodesk instead of trusting a downloaded copy.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. A missing or incompatible Autodesk component should be repaired through the Autodesk installer.
Why does renaming the file help?
During a documented extraction failure, the installer may be unable to replace an existing copy because it is locked, damaged, or protected. Renaming gives the installer a clean filename to install. Use this only when the installer log names AcSignCore16.dll.
What if renaming does not fix Error 4001?
Check permissions, free disk space, antivirus blocking, the Autodesk Installation Services component, C:AutodeskIM, C:UsersPublicDocuments, and the RealDWG shared installer log. Then perform an Autodesk repair or clean reinstall.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use System Restore?
System Restore is a secondary option for a failure that began immediately after a known system change. Autodesk repair or reinstall is the primary path.
What if the application still will not start?
Record the exact Autodesk product and version, the complete error message, the time the problem began, recent update or antivirus events, and the relevant installer log. Give those details to Autodesk Support rather than trying multiple DLL copies from unverified sources.
