The adappmgrutil.dll error usually means an Autodesk Application Manager or Autodesk Desktop App component is damaged, partially removed, or being called by an old startup entry. It is not a Windows system DLL, so copying it into System32 is not the correct repair.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- The error appears while installing, updating, or opening AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds Max, or another Autodesk product: repair or reinstall that Autodesk product.
- The error appears during Windows startup, but Autodesk programs still work: remove or repair the obsolete Autodesk Desktop App or its leftover startup entry.
- Windows Security recently quarantined an Autodesk file: check Protection History, then prefer reinstalling from Autodesk rather than restoring an isolated DLL.
- The error started after an interrupted Autodesk update: reinstall Autodesk Access or the affected Autodesk product.
- Several unrelated programs also report missing or corrupted files: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then reinstall Autodesk.
- The dialog mentions a different executable or another missing DLL: investigate that executable first.
adappmgrutil.dllmay only be a symptom of a stale updater or incomplete uninstall.
What adappmgrutil.dll belongs to
adappmgrutil.dll is associated with Autodesk Application Manager, later known as Autodesk Desktop App. Autodesk used this Windows component to deliver product updates and security patches. Autodesk Desktop App has since been replaced by Autodesk Access.

The same folder historically contained files such as AdAppMgr.exe, AdAppMgrSvc.exe, and the Autodesk updater. The exact path and files can differ between Autodesk products and installation generations.
This is why the file should remain with the Autodesk component that installed it. A matching filename downloaded from another source may have the wrong architecture, version, companion files, or dependencies.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Autodesk component
This is the safest fix when the error appears while using Autodesk software.

- Close all Autodesk programs.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- If the Autodesk installer offers Repair, select it.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
- Open the Autodesk product again.
Some older Autodesk installers provide a repair option. Newer installation experiences may not. If Repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the product from your Autodesk Account using Autodesk’s official installer.
Repair Autodesk Desktop App or install Autodesk Access
If the affected entry is Autodesk Desktop App, Autodesk Application Manager, or a similar updater component:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Autodesk Desktop App or Autodesk Application Manager.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Autodesk Access from Autodesk’s official source, or reinstall the Autodesk product that requires the update component.
Do not assume that Autodesk Access must restore this exact legacy filename. Current Autodesk installers can use different components. The success test is that the Autodesk product or updater works without the missing-file dialog.
If the uninstall fails, use Control Panel > Programs and Features instead. Remove only the Autodesk entry that corresponds to the damaged component. Do not delete every Autodesk folder when other Autodesk products remain installed.

Fix 2: Remove a stale Autodesk startup entry
If AutoCAD or another Autodesk product opens normally but the popup appears during Windows startup, an old updater, service, scheduled task, or startup entry may still be requesting the missing file.
Check Startup apps
- Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Autodesk Application Manager, Autodesk Desktop App, or an updater entry.
- Right-click an entry that belongs to the removed or obsolete component.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a stale entry is useful for diagnosis, but it does not repair an Autodesk installation that is still needed.
Check installed services
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Look for an Autodesk Application Manager service, including
AdAppMgrSvc. - If the related Autodesk component has already been removed, stop the orphaned service and remove the component through Autodesk’s documented clean-uninstall procedure.
Avoid deleting services or registry entries at random. Autodesk’s clean-uninstall instructions identify the relevant service, files, folders, and registry remnants. Registry editing can damage Windows, so export a key before changing it and remove only entries clearly associated with the obsolete Autodesk component.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
taskschd.msc
- Press Enter.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for an Autodesk updater task.
- Check its Actions tab to see which executable it launches.
- Disable or remove the task only if the Autodesk component has been intentionally uninstalled.
If the action points to a file under an old Autodesk path, reinstalling the current Autodesk component is usually cleaner than rebuilding the old task manually.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus detection does not prove that the Autodesk file was malware. A damaged, modified, or incorrectly detected file can be quarantined, but a file restored from quarantine may still be incomplete.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving Autodesk, Application Manager, Desktop App, or
adappmgrutil.dll. - Check the detected file path and the action taken.
Restore a quarantined file only when you can verify that it came from a trusted Autodesk installation and the detection is a false positive. In most cases, reinstalling the affected Autodesk product or Autodesk Access is safer because it restores the complete, matching set of files.
If an official Autodesk installation is repeatedly quarantined, record the detection name and submit the file or report to Autodesk and Microsoft for analysis. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to copy a DLL into a folder.

Fix 4: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It calls registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, which are provided only by DLLs designed for self-registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 AdAppMgrUtil.dll
A normal Autodesk application utility DLL does not become usable merely because it was registered. If the command reports that an entry point is missing, it confirms that registration is not the repair.
The correct method is to restore the Autodesk installation through its official repair or reinstall process.
Fix 5: Check architecture and companion files
Historical installations commonly placed this component under Program Files (x86), and public records identify at least one 32-bit build. That does not prove that every Autodesk release uses the same architecture or version.
Do not replace the file with one chosen only because the name matches. A 32-bit Autodesk utility should remain with the application that supplied it, and a file from another Autodesk release may require different companion files.

If the error says the file was found but could not be loaded, check the full dialog for another missing module. A wrong architecture or missing dependency can produce a load failure even when adappmgrutil.dll exists.
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is not a replacement for this Autodesk DLL. Install or repair a Visual C++ package only when the Autodesk installer log specifically identifies that prerequisite as damaged. Keep the existing packages unless there is a clear reason to remove one.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are affected
adappmgrutil.dll is not a Windows-protected DLL, so SFC normally will not recreate it. These commands are useful when several applications show unexplained corruption or Windows itself is behaving abnormally.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
bat
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run System File Checker:
bat
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Autodesk afterward.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run it again after DISM completes. These commands repair Windows components, not the Autodesk DLL itself.

A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal cause of a missing Autodesk Application Manager DLL. Driver work is relevant only when Autodesk also crashes with display errors, Windows shows device failures, or several applications began failing after a hardware or Windows change.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, System devices, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not use Device Manager to search for adappmgrutil.dll, and do not expect a driver update to restore an Autodesk application file.
Manually checking several hardware vendors and matching driver packages can be time-consuming when the problem is broader than Autodesk. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; the full version performs the driver installation, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Autodesk component that owns this DLL.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after an interrupted update
If the error began immediately after an Autodesk update or failed installer and a restore point exists, System Restore may reverse the change without removing personal files.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the Autodesk failure.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and choose Finish.
- Restart Windows and test Autodesk.
System Restore is not guaranteed to restore a particular Autodesk DLL, and it may remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point. Use it only after reviewing the changes.
What not to do
- Do not download
adappmgrutil.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not overwrite an existing Autodesk DLL with a file from another release.
- Do not install every Visual C++ package as a blind fix.
- Do not run
regsvr32unless Autodesk documentation specifically requires registration for that component. - Do not delete broad Autodesk folders while other Autodesk products are installed.
- Do not disable antivirus protection just to force a DLL into place.
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch the installed Autodesk release, or leave the real damaged updater untouched.

Prevention after the repair
Once Autodesk starts normally:
- Install Autodesk products and updates only through your Autodesk Account, Autodesk Access, or the product’s official installer.
- Keep Windows Security enabled.
- Restart after a major Autodesk installation or removal.
- Avoid interrupting an Autodesk update while files are being replaced.
- Remove obsolete Autodesk Desktop App entries instead of leaving broken startup tasks behind.
- Keep a restore point before major product changes.
- Save the exact executable named in any future error dialog.

Is adappmgrutil.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk Application Manager and Autodesk Desktop App. It should not be restored to a Windows system folder.

Older Windows-based Autodesk products that used Application Manager or Autodesk Desktop App may have installed it. AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds Max, and other products can have different installation generations and component layouts.
Why does the error appear at startup when Autodesk works?
A leftover updater, service, scheduled task, or startup entry may still call the missing component. Check Task Manager, Services, and Task Scheduler.
Will Autodesk Access always restore this exact filename?
Not necessarily. Autodesk Access is the successor to Desktop App, and current installers may use different files. Repair success should be judged by whether the Autodesk product and update process work normally.
Can I fix it by installing Visual C++?
Not automatically. A Visual C++ prerequisite may be involved only if the Autodesk installer identifies it. Visual C++ does not replace adappmgrutil.dll.

What if reinstalling Autodesk does not help?
Read the exact executable and missing dependency in the dialog, check Autodesk installation logs, review Windows Event Viewer, and test from a separate administrator profile. If the issue remains, contact Autodesk Support with the product name, installer log, and full error text.
