The 60-second answer
cnbxrfc1.dll is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software. It is a driver component, not a general Windows file and not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.

The safest first repair is to identify the Canon printer model, remove the damaged or obsolete Canon driver if necessary, restart Windows, and install the current driver package from Canon’s official support site. Do not download a loose copy of the DLL and do not begin with regsvr32.

What causes the cnbxrfc1.dll error?
The usual causes are:
- A Canon printer driver installation was interrupted or damaged.
- A Canon printer or utility was removed incompletely.
- Windows Update or a driver update left an inconsistent printer package.
- Windows Security quarantined the file.
- An old Canon monitor or startup utility still points to a deleted driver file.
- An incompatible legacy Canon driver is being used on a newer Windows installation.
- Windows component corruption is affecting more than the Canon software.
- A suspicious copy of the file was altered or placed in the wrong location.
The full error context matters. A message during printing points toward the printer driver. A popup during startup may come from an old Canon utility, scheduled task, or startup entry even if you no longer use a Canon printer.
First, identify what is calling the file
Before changing anything, record the details that identify the broken package.
Check the error window
Write down:
- The complete error text.
- The program named in the title bar.
- Whether it appears during startup, printing, scanning, or when opening Canon software.
- The Canon printer model, if known.
- Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the message names a program other than a Canon utility, that program may be loading a leftover printer component.
Check installed Canon software
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for Canon.
- Note the names of printer utilities, monitors, scanning software, and driver packages.
Do not uninstall every Canon entry immediately if you still use the printer. First identify the model and download the replacement package from Canon’s official support portal. The package may be labelled MP Drivers, Printer Driver, Setup, or Full Driver & Software Package, depending on the model.
Check the printer and driver
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Canon printer.
- Confirm its exact model name.
For a more detailed driver view:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
printmanagement.msc. - Press Enter.
If Windows says it cannot find Print Management, use Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
This lists third-party driver packages, but the output can be difficult to interpret. Do not remove a package merely because its name looks old. Removing the wrong printer package can affect a working device.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
This is the most likely fix for cnbxrfc1.dll.
Download the correct package
- Open Canon’s official support website manually.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Select the correct system architecture when Canon presents that choice.
- Download the current printer or MP Drivers package.
- Save the installer rather than running an unknown file from a search result.
The exact package cannot be determined from cnbxrfc1.dll alone. Do not use a driver for a similar-looking Canon model.
Remove the damaged installation
If the Canon installer recommends removing the existing driver, follow its instructions. Otherwise:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the associated Canon utility or driver software if it is clearly tied to that printer.
- Restart Windows.
For stubborn printer entries:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Canon driver that belongs to the removed printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
Only remove a package when you have confirmed that it belongs to the affected Canon printer. If another Canon printer uses the same package, removing it may affect that device.
Install the replacement
- Close printing and scanning applications.
- Right-click the Canon installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
The repair worked if the original program opens without the DLL message, the printer appears normally, and a test page prints. If the same error returns, record the executable named by the popup. The problem may belong to a Canon utility rather than the main print driver.

Manually hunting through several driver versions and guessing which package matches the printer can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver entries and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation features require the full version, and the exact Canon package remains the definitive choice for this file.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Windows Security may remove a driver component if it considers the file suspicious or altered.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions Canon, the printer driver, or
cnbxrfc1.dll. - Check the reported file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file simply because its name appears in the error. Restore or allow it only when all of these are true:
- The file came from the Canon installer.
- Its location matches the installed Canon driver.
- The file has a valid Canon digital signature where one is expected.
- A current Canon installer would otherwise remove it again.
- A Windows Security scan does not identify it as malicious.
If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined, uninstall the damaged Canon package, and install a fresh package obtained from Canon. If the file appeared outside a Canon or expected Windows driver location, run a full Windows Security scan before restoring anything.
Fix 3: Update Windows and repair the printer through Windows
Windows may offer a compatible printer driver through Windows Update.

- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install a printer-related update only when it matches your Canon device.
- Restart Windows.
You can also try the built-in printer installation path:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select the Canon printer if it appears.
- Follow the setup prompts.
This can restore basic printing, but it may not install Canon scanning features, maintenance utilities, or model-specific controls. If Windows adds a generic driver and cnbxrfc1.dll is still requested, use the exact Canon package instead.
Fix 4: Use Device Manager for a damaged driver
Device Manager is useful when Windows reports a device or driver problem, but it does not guarantee that it will restore a Canon-specific DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Locate the Canon device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Try Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, the Roll Back Driver button may be available. Use it only when the previous driver was working and Windows identifies a prior version.
To remove a clearly damaged device:
- Right-click the Canon device in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package only if you have the correct replacement installer ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the Canon package.
Device Manager cannot identify the printer model from cnbxrfc1.dll; it is only a repair route after you have identified the device.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other system files also fail
DISM and SFC are appropriate when several Windows components are malfunctioning, updates fail, or Windows reports broader corruption. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party Canon driver.

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the Canon application again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the Canon DLL is present. SFC primarily checks protected Windows files, not every third-party driver component. Return to the Canon driver repair steps if the error remains.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon package when that package is the actual source of the missing file.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing or damaged DLLs.
Do not treat this as the normal repair:
regsvr32 cnbxrfc1.dll
There is no reliable evidence that cnbxrfc1.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. The command may return an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” or it may distract from the real problem: an incomplete printer-driver installation.
A proper driver installer places files in the locations and package structure expected by Windows. Registration cannot recreate missing dependencies or repair an incorrect driver version.

Random DLL repositories are a poor repair source because the file may be:
Recommended Free Tools
- Malware or an altered executable.
- The wrong Canon build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing required companion files.
- Intended for another printer model.
- Unsigned or impossible to verify.
Do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, the application folder, or DriverStore. A reported 32-bit build does not mean that copying it into an arbitrary 32-bit or 64-bit folder will work. The correct path is determined by the Canon driver package and Windows installation process.
Use Canon’s official support portal for the printer package and Microsoft’s official support pages for Windows repair, security, and update guidance.
If you no longer use a Canon printer
A startup error can remain after the printer has been removed.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall obsolete Canon utilities.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove unused Canon printers.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old Canon monitor or utility only when you recognize it.
- Restart Windows.
If the popup continues, check Task Scheduler for an old Canon task and review the error’s named executable. Do not delete a scheduled task solely because it contains the word Canon if another device still depends on it.
If the Canon printer is unsupported on Windows 11
Do not mix files from another Canon model. First check whether Canon provides a Windows 11 package for the exact printer. If not, try the compatible driver offered by Windows through Add device or Windows Update. Basic printing may work while scanning or maintenance features remain unavailable.

If the installer supports only an older Windows version, compatibility mode may help the installer start, but it does not guarantee that the resulting driver is supported. Contact Canon or use a supported replacement printer when the required driver is no longer available.
When to use System Restore or a malware scan
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent driver or software change and a restore point predates the problem.
- Press the Windows key.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the Canon installation changed.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore can roll back drivers, installed programs, registry settings, and system files, but it does not intentionally remove personal documents.

FAQ
Is cnbxrfc1.dll a Windows system file?
It is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software in public file records. It should not be treated as a general Windows runtime component.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify reported builds as 32-bit, including version 0.4.1536.2. Do not assume every Canon package uses that exact build, and do not replace it with an arbitrary 64-bit DLL.
Which Canon printer installed it?
The filename does not identify a specific model. You need the printer name, installed Canon software, error timing, and driver package details to determine the caller.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX?
Not for this filename alone. There is no evidence that cnbxrfc1.dll is part of those Microsoft runtimes.
What if the printer still works?
The missing component may belong to a Canon monitor or utility rather than the core print path. Repair or uninstall the associated Canon utility instead of copying a DLL manually.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the full error, calling executable, reported DLL path, Canon printer model, Windows version, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether the error appears at startup, during printing, or when opening Canon software. That information points to the correct package far more reliably than the DLL filename alone.
