The best Nintendo Direct moments are not simply the biggest game announcements. They pair a meaningful reveal with a delivery device viewers remember: puppets, executive slapstick, a sudden logo, a playable demonstration or a trailer that withholds just enough information to trigger speculation. Looking back from Nintendo Direct’s 15th anniversary on 21 October 2026, the strongest examples are the 2015 Muppet performance, the 2014 Breath of the Wild glimpse, Metroid Dread’s 2021 return, and the many Smash character-reveal swerves.

This is a subjective ranking of proper, multi-game Nintendo Directs and major Nintendo presentations in that tradition. It excludes Pokémon Presents, Nindies, Minis and single-topic broadcasts, following Nintendo Life’s stated criteria.

What are the best Nintendo Direct moments ever?

Nintendo Direct began on 21 October 2011. GameSpot describes that first broadcast as a seven-minute presentation covering Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. By 2022, GameSpot counted close to 150 Direct videos, including game-specific editions. The format grew from a short news bulletin into a stage where Nintendo could control timing, tone and the audience’s expectations without a conventional press-conference audience.

The ranking below weighs five qualities: secrecy and surprise, franchise or cultural impact, presentation craft, emotional payoff, and whether a reveal changed what viewers expected from later Directs. It is editorial judgment rather than an industry award; Nintendo Life’s 2026 reader poll provides a separate audience signal.

Rank Date Moment Why it endures
1 16 June 2015 The Muppet show Comedy, personality and a transformation into the Star Fox team make the presentation itself the event.
2 10 June 2014 “The big guns” Satoru Iwata and Reggie Fils-Aimé turn executive personas into live-action spectacle.
3 12 September 2025 Virtual Boy revival An unexpected return for a failed platform, paired with a dedicated Switch 2-style viewing solution.
4 8 March 2018 Octo Expansion becomes Smash A Splatoon trailer morphs into the Smash logo and confirms the Inklings in one visual swerve.
5 10 June 2014 A glimpse of the Wild A playable demonstration communicates open-ended Zelda design more clearly than a feature list could.
6 11 June 2019 Ganondorf returns A mummified figure and fragments from the Breath of the Wild sequel create a speculation engine.
7 15 June 2021 Dread is real After 19 years without a new original 2D Metroid, Samus is shown fleeing a terrifying enemy.
8 21 June 2023 A Wonderful surprise Warped pipes, talking flowers and Elephant Mario prove that 2D Mario can still surprise.
9 10 June 2014 Mario Maker reveal “Create your own custom Mario courses” instantly suggests a huge creative and social system.
10 10 June 2014 Robot Chicken skits Stop-motion jokes about Mario, Link, Toon Link and Reggie give the event an unusual rhythm.
11 11 June 2013 The reveal of Smash reveals Mega Man’s bespoke trailer establishes a repeatable character-reveal language.
12 14 September 2023 F-Zero returns A Blue Falcon bait-and-switch leads to F-Zero 99 and immediate Nintendo Switch Online availability.
13 12 November 2015 and 1 September 2016 Reggie, Bill and the doughnuts A continuing possession-and-doughnut gag rewards viewers who return for later broadcasts.
14 14 February 2013 The Luigi Bros. Iwata wears a Luigi hat for the entire presentation, while the Japanese edition adds Miyamoto and a Poltergust joke.
15 3 June 2012 Non-specific action figure An odd Miiverse sketch signals that Directs can be deliberately strange as well as informative.

Why is the 2015 Muppet Direct often called Nintendo’s funniest?

On 16 June 2015, Miyamoto, Iwata and colleagues appear as Muppets before transforming into the Star Fox team. The joke works because it is not merely an interstitial: it turns Nintendo’s executives into characters and then connects that comedy directly to a game announcement. Nintendo Life ranked it first, and its 2026 reader poll also put the Muppet show at the top with 27% of 590 votes.

The performance illustrates Nintendo’s most distinctive Direct technique: make the messenger part of the reveal. A conventional trailer could have shown Star Fox footage, but the puppet conceit gives viewers a scene they can describe years later.

What was the biggest Nintendo Direct reveal?

For pure design impact, the 10 June 2014 glimpse of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the strongest candidate. Eiji Aonuma explains a return to open-ended Zelda design, then the demonstration shows a world in which distant mountains can be reached. A Guardian attack tears through the landscape, converting an abstract promise about freedom into something immediately playable.

The same 2014 E3 event also included the first Mario Maker presentation, amiibo’s debut, Splatoon, Robot Chicken shorts and the executive “big guns” fight. That concentration of ideas is why the event remains a reference point for how a Direct can alternate spectacle, comedy and software without losing momentum.

Which Nintendo Direct had the best Smash reveal?

The 8 March 2018 sequence is the best single visual swerve: a trailer for Splatoon 2’s Octo Expansion suddenly changes into the Smash logo, confirming a new game and the Inklings. GameSpot called the ending an “Ultimate Swerve,” because Nintendo had trained viewers to expect one more announcement and still managed to surprise them.

Mega Man’s 11 June 2013 reveal is just as important historically. Its bespoke trailer helped establish the grammar later Smash announcements repeatedly used: identify a character through a cinematic setup, conceal the fighter until the payoff, and let the logo or music complete the reveal. Cloud Strife in November 2015, Banjo and Kazooie in June 2019 and Sora’s October 2021 final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveal show how durable that format became.

When was Metroid Dread announced?

Metroid Dread was announced on 15 June 2021, after 19 years without a new original 2D Metroid. Samus appears in a new suit and is pursued by a frightening enemy, making the long absence part of the emotional force of the trailer. Nintendo’s official E3 2021 video places the Metroid Dread segment at 11:43.

It ranks highly because the announcement answers a specific fan history, not just a release-calendar question. The reveal’s tension, visual identity and immediate clarity made the return feel real before viewers knew many mechanical details.

How did Nintendo Direct turn announcements into events?

Executive personas became recurring characters

Iwata’s “Hello everyone. You may be curious about why I am wearing this hat” opening in the 2013 Luigi presentation is a compact example of the approach. He keeps the Luigi hat on throughout the broadcast, while the Japanese version adds Miyamoto and a Poltergust gag. The 2014 live-action fight between Iwata and Reggie pushes the same idea into spectacle.

Running jokes rewarded repeat viewers

The Reggie, Bill Trinen and doughnut storyline, spread across the 12 November 2015 and 1 September 2016 presentations, treats separate Directs as episodes in a series. Bill’s supposed Yo-kai possession and the missing meeting doughnuts are not essential to any game announcement, but they give regular viewers an extra layer to anticipate.

Playable demonstrations made design legible

Breath of the Wild demonstrates open-ended travel; Mario Maker demonstrates player-authored levels; Super Mario Bros. Wonder demonstrates world-bending rules through talking flowers, warped pipes and Elephant Mario. In each case, a short scene explains a design idea more effectively than a list of features.

Surprise could come from history as well as novelty

The 12 September 2025 Virtual Boy segment revives software from a failed platform and pairs it with a dedicated Switch 2-style viewing solution. It is best understood as a surprise-and-nostalgia pick; hardware details and availability should be checked against Nintendo’s current information before relying on them.

Which other Nintendo Direct moments deserve honorable mention?

  • Reggie and The Last Story: In February 2012, Reggie announced the Western release after the Operation Rainfall campaign.
  • Pokémon X and Y: The January 2013 presentation showed how a focused broadcast could still become a major news event, even though Pokémon Presents is outside this ranking’s criteria.
  • EarthBound’s same-day release: The July 2013 announcement was an early Nintendo “shadow drop,” making the game available on the day of the presentation.
  • Metroid Prime 4: The 2017 teaser generated enormous anticipation with minimal footage.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Isabelle and the game’s September 2018 reveal delivered a character-led announcement with immediate emotional recognition.
  • Mario’s 35th anniversary: The September 2020 Direct showed how a themed retrospective could support multiple announcements.
  • Mario movie casting: The 2021 presentation used a Direct for a film announcement, widening the format beyond games.

How should you judge a great Nintendo Direct moment?

Start with secrecy: could viewers reasonably have predicted the announcement? Then ask whether the reveal mattered to a franchise or wider gaming culture. Presentation craft separates a memorable Direct from a routine one, while emotional payoff measures the audience reaction in the moment. Finally, consider whether the segment changed expectations for future broadcasts, as Smash’s character trailers and Nintendo’s recurring comedy clearly did.

Nintendo Life’s 2026 poll offers a useful check on that framework. Among 590 readers, the Muppet show received 27%, the Breath of the Wild glimpse 14% and Metroid Dread 12%. Those figures do not replace critical judgment, but they show how comedy, design ambition and long-awaited returns appeal to different parts of the audience.

Where can you verify the original broadcast dates?

Nintendo’s official video archive is the best place to confirm dates, regional editions and the difference between a full Direct and a single-topic presentation. Nintendo Life’s anniversary feature and GameSpot’s chronological retrospective provide useful historical context, but individual uploads can have different runtimes, language tracks or edited introductions. For a precise citation, use the date and title attached to Nintendo’s own archive entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Nintendo create the Direct format instead of relying only on E3?

A Direct lets Nintendo deliver the same timed presentation directly to viewers rather than depending on a trade-show room or a live press audience. That control also makes precise edits, regional scheduling and surprise endings possible.

Why are Pokémon Presents and Nintendo Direct Mini broadcasts excluded from this ranking?

They serve narrower purposes: Pokémon Presents focuses on one brand, while Minis and single-topic shows concentrate on a limited set of announcements. The ranking is intended to measure the multi-game format that developed from the 2011 Direct.

What makes a reveal trailer better than a simple logo announcement?

A strong trailer gives viewers evidence of the game’s identity before naming it. The best examples create a visual question, delay the answer and then make the reveal feel inevitable in hindsight.

Did every Nintendo Direct use comedy or executive cameos?

No. Comedy is one memorable branch of the format, not a requirement. Some of the most effective broadcasts rely almost entirely on playable footage, music and carefully controlled information, as the Breath of the Wild and Metroid Dread reveals demonstrate.
