What should I play after Mass Effect? Start with The Outer Worlds if you want another science-fiction RPG built around dialogue, factions, exploration, and different outcomes. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if companion stories and far-reaching decisions matter more than matching Mass Effect’s setting or combat. For the closest connection to BioWare’s party-centered storytelling, look to Dragon Age. There is no single perfect replacement: the best next game depends on which part of Mass Effect you most want to keep.

What should you look for in a Mass Effect follow-up?

Mass Effect combines several pleasures that do not always come together in another RPG: a science-fiction setting, a party of companions, dialogue choices, consequences, and combat built around a squad. The series presents those choices as central to relationships, story outcomes, and civilizations, but another game can resemble it in one respect and diverge sharply in another.

Before choosing, decide which of these elements you want most:

  • Setting: Do you want science fiction, fantasy, cyberpunk, or space opera?
  • Companions: Is it important to recruit a party, follow personal stories, build relationships, or have companions affect the main story?
  • Consequences: Are you looking for dialogue changes, faction outcomes, companion outcomes, different endings, or reasons to replay?
  • Combat: Do you want real-time shooting, real-time action RPG combat, or turn-based tactics?
  • Role-play: Would you rather create a character and build, choose an alignment, or play a more defined protagonist?
  • Structure: Do you want an open world, hub-based exploration, linear zones, or a compact campaign?

Those distinctions matter more than a single ranking. A game can deliver excellent party role-play without feeling like a shooter, or preserve the space-opera mood while using older systems. The recommendations below explain what each one carries over and what it leaves behind.

Is The Outer Worlds the closest sci-fi follow-up?

Yes, it is the safest first pick if you want a science-fiction setting with dialogue choices, factions, exploration, and different outcomes. It is a thematic and structural follow-up, not a one-for-one replacement for Mass Effect’s squad combat or scope.

Why it fits

The Outer Worlds puts role-play and decision-making inside a futuristic setting. Its cast of characters and travel across multiple planets offer familiar ingredients for someone who enjoyed moving through a science-fiction world, meeting people, and navigating competing interests. Faction choices and alternate outcomes also make decisions part of the appeal rather than a decorative layer.

What changes

The experience is smaller and more compact than Mass Effect, and the combat is less focused on managing a deployable squad. That tradeoff makes it a good choice when you want a concentrated science-fiction RPG rather than a much larger commitment or a close mechanical match. If the specific pleasure you want is commanding a team during real-time shooting, this is not the closest answer on that axis.

Pick it when setting and dialogue-led exploration come first. If you care more about the depth of companion relationships and the ways decisions reshape personal stories, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a stronger fit despite its very different genre and combat.

Which RPG has companions and consequences like Mass Effect?

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest choice when companions, relationships, and decisions are the priority. Its character stories and choices can affect both personal arcs and the main story, while your class, party, relationships, and approach shape the experience.

Why it fits

Companions are part of the role-playing experience, not simply extra characters on the battlefield: the game supports party travel, personal stories, and romance, and its decisions can reach into both companion arcs and the larger plot. The combination makes it the clearest recommendation for readers who mean “choices and consequences” more than “another game with guns in space.”

What changes

The setting is fantasy, and combat is turn-based and built around Dungeons & Dragons rules. That is a substantial change if you are expecting Mass Effect-style real-time squad shooting. It also changes the rhythm of decision-making: the fit here is about role-play and reactive relationships, not reproducing the feel of a firefight.

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if companion intimacy and the possibility that your decisions alter several layers of the story matter most. If you want a recognizable BioWare lineage and a party-centered format, the Dragon Age games provide a closer family resemblance.

Which Dragon Age game feels closest to BioWare’s Mass Effect?

Dragon Age is the most direct BioWare-family alternative, but its fantasy world and individual game structures make the three entries different recommendations. Choose The Veilguard for a modern, more linear option, Origins for classic party role-play, and Inquisition for a broader world and more open structure.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard — modern and more linear

The Veilguard is the modern pick for players who want recruitable companions and relationships within a quest structure explicitly compared with Mass Effect. Its BioWare connection makes it a natural answer to “What is the closest BioWare-style RPG?” The important qualification is that it is fantasy rather than science fiction, and its structure is more linear than Inquisition.

Dragon Age: Origins — classic party role-play

Origins is the choice for readers who value older-school party role-play over modern presentation. Its backgrounds, companions, and difficult decisions make it a strong fit for someone interested in the roots of party-centered BioWare storytelling. Its age is part of the tradeoff: expect older presentation and systems rather than the conventions of a modern release.

Dragon Age: Inquisition — a broader, more open fantasy journey

Inquisition offers a broader fantasy world and a more open structure than The Veilguard. That makes it the option to consider if exploring a larger-feeling setting is more appealing than following the more linear structure associated with the newer entry. It shares the franchise’s party-RPG connection to Mass Effect, but it does not reproduce the science-fiction setting.

BioWare’s official catalog presents both Mass Effect and Dragon Age as choice-driven RPG experiences. Within that family, the choice is less about finding one definitive successor and more about whether you want a contemporary linear quest, a classic party RPG, or a more open fantasy world.

Is Knights of the Old Republic still worth playing after Mass Effect?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a strong pick if you want classic BioWare science fiction and a space-opera identity. It offers customizable party members and alignment choices, but its presentation and design conventions are dated compared with modern RPGs.

Its appeal is design DNA rather than current presentation: a party, role-playing decisions, and a science-fiction setting shaped by a recognizable space-opera sensibility. That combination makes it especially relevant after finishing the Mass Effect trilogy, even though it is an older game and not a modern mechanical substitute.

Choose it if you are curious about classic BioWare role-play and willing to meet an older design on its own terms. If current presentation or a more contemporary structure matters more, consider The Outer Worlds for science-fiction choices or The Veilguard for modern BioWare party storytelling.

What if you want personal science fiction rather than a squad?

Cyberpunk 2077 is the fit for character customization, relationships, romance, dialogue choices, and a large futuristic setting. Its main difference is structural: it is primarily a solo story, not a Mass Effect-style RPG built around deploying a squad.

That makes it a useful choice when you want a vivid science-fiction setting and a personal role-playing story, but not when your essential requirement is traveling and fighting with a team of companions. Its relationships and dialogue choices preserve some of the character-focused appeal, while its solo emphasis changes the group dynamic.

Which games focus on factions, politics, or tactical choices?

GreedFall is the pick for faction allegiance and an old-school role-playing feel; Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is the pick for a tactical space-party RPG. Both bring companions and consequential decisions, but neither aims to reproduce Mass Effect’s combat style.

GreedFall — faction allegiance

In GreedFall, faction allegiance can affect the outcome. The game also includes recruitable companions, romance, and multiple endings, making it relevant to readers who want political choices to matter alongside party relationships. Its tradeoffs are slower pacing, a melee emphasis, and a smaller-budget feel.

Consider it when the role of factions in shaping an outcome sounds more appealing than fast-paced science-fiction combat. The older-school feel and slower pace are part of the decision, not incidental details to overlook.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader — tactical space-party role-play

Rogue Trader gives you a custom protagonist, a voidship setting, and companions with their own motivations. It also includes romance and consequential decisions. Its strongest overlap with Mass Effect is the combination of space setting, a party, and role-playing choices, rather than combat that works like a real-time shooter.

The combat is more tactical and turn-based, so it suits players who are open to a slower, more deliberate party-RPG approach. Choose it if the space setting and companion group are the draw and you are happy to exchange squad shooting for tactical play.

What should you play after finishing the Mass Effect trilogy?

Start by naming the element you would miss most if it disappeared. That gives you a more reliable next step than picking a game simply because it is also an RPG.

  • You want science fiction, dialogue, and factions: begin with The Outer Worlds.
  • You want the most reactive companion stories: choose Baldur’s Gate 3, accepting the fantasy setting and turn-based combat.
  • You want BioWare’s party-centered storytelling: pick among the three Dragon Age entries according to whether you prefer modern linear structure, classic systems, or a broader open world.
  • You want classic space opera and BioWare role-play: consider Knights of the Old Republic, with its older presentation in mind.
  • You want a customized character in a large futuristic setting: look at Cyberpunk 2077, knowing it is primarily a solo story.
  • You want faction consequences or tactical space-party play: compare GreedFall with Rogue Trader.

The safest overall follow-up for a science-fiction fan is The Outer Worlds. But if what made Mass Effect matter was the feeling that companions and choices shaped the journey, Baldur’s Gate 3 may be the better next game even though it is less similar on the surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you choose between a similar setting and similar companions?

Choose setting when you want the mood, world, and subject matter to feel familiar; choose companion depth when you want relationships and party decisions to stay central. Those priorities point to different games, so it helps to treat “similar to Mass Effect” as several separate questions rather than one test.

For setting first, The Outer Worlds provides science-fiction exploration and faction choices, while Knights of the Old Republic offers classic space opera. For companion stories first, Baldur’s Gate 3 emphasizes personal arcs and consequential decisions, while Dragon Age retains the closest franchise-level connection to BioWare’s party-RPG identity. If combat is the deciding factor, none of these recommendations should be assumed to duplicate Mass Effect’s real-time squad-shooting structure: the list spans turn-based and tactical systems as well as other forms of RPG combat.

There is no universal winner because the defining parts of Mass Effect pull in different directions. Pick the next game by the feature you want to preserve, then accept the tradeoff that comes with it.
