mojoshader.dll is normally supplied by a game or development tool, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact program that reports the error. Do not download a generic copy of mojoshader.dll or place it in System32, because the correct file depends on the application, architecture, and native dependencies.
What this file actually does
MojoShader is an open-source shader-conversion library used by applications that translate Direct3D shader code for graphics APIs such as OpenGL. It is designed to be embedded or compiled into software, not installed as a universal Windows component.

That distinction matters. Windows does not normally provide mojoshader.dll, and the file does not have one authoritative version, size, or architecture for every program. A game may ship a file named MojoShader.dll, while MonoGame tools commonly use libmojoshader_32.dll or libmojoshader_64.dll.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
A game says MojoShader.dll is missing |
The game’s own file was deleted, quarantined, or damaged | Verify or repair the game files |
FNA reports Unable to load DLL 'MojoShader.dll' |
The FNA-based application cannot load its bundled native library | Repair or reinstall that exact game |
MonoGame reports libmojoshader_64.dll or libmojoshader_32.dll |
A content tool has a missing library or runtime dependency | Repair the tool and check the Visual C++ runtime |
| The message says “or one of its dependencies” | The named DLL may exist, but another native file cannot load | Inspect dependencies and install the required runtime |
| The error began after antivirus activity | The application DLL may be in quarantine | Review antivirus history and then verify the installation |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” appears | The file may be corrupt, incompatible, or the wrong architecture | Restore the application’s original copy |
| The error appears after copying a DLL from another game | The file may be the wrong build or depend on different exports | Remove the replacement and reinstall the owning application |
Fix 1: Identify the program that owns the file
First determine which executable produces the message.
- Note the application name in the error window.
- Check whether the failure occurs while launching a game, building MonoGame content, running an FNA application, or opening another development tool.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look for the program’s executable and inspect the same folder for
MojoShader.dll,mojoshader.dll, or alibmojoshader_32.dllorlibmojoshader_64.dllfile. - If the error appears in a launcher, open the launcher’s game properties and identify the installation directory.
Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation means the application is 64-bit. A 32-bit game can run on 64-bit Windows and requires 32-bit native libraries.
If you cannot identify the owner, use the full path shown in the error, launcher log, shortcut properties, or Windows Event Viewer. Press Win + R, type eventvwr.msc, press Enter, then open Windows Logs > Application and review errors recorded at the time of the failed launch.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 2: Verify or repair the game or tool
This is the most likely solution for a game.
In Steam:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the operation to finish, then launch the game again.
Other launchers use similar commands named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Check files. Use the launcher that installed the game rather than a third-party DLL source.
For a standalone MonoGame tool, FNA application, or manually installed program:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if a Repair button is available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the program using its normal uninstaller.
- Download the installer again from the program’s developer or official distribution channel.
- Reinstall it to a local drive, then run it once before restoring custom files or plugins.
A successful repair restores the application’s own matching DLL and companion files. If verification reports files were replaced but the error remains, continue with the dependency checks below instead of copying another DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a native DLL after an update or false-positive detection.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an item referring to the affected game, tool, or MojoShader file.
- Do not restore the file blindly. Confirm that the program came from its official installer and run a full security scan if the file was unexpected.
- After confirming the installation is trustworthy, follow the security product’s restore or allow procedure.
- Run the game launcher’s file verification again.
If the same file is quarantined repeatedly, the application package may be defective or compromised. Contact the game or tool vendor rather than downloading a replacement from a DLL catalogue.
Fix 4: Install the required Visual C++ runtime
A Windows loader message can say that libmojoshader_64.dll is missing even when that file is present. In one documented MonoGame case, the actual missing dependency was MSVCR120.dll, which belongs to the Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable.
Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ redistributable downloads and follow the link for the Visual C++ 2013 package.
Choose the architecture that matches the application:

vcredist_x64.exefor a 64-bit native application. - Use
vcredist_x86.exefor a 32-bit application, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. - Install both packages if you use separate 32-bit and 64-bit tools.
Then:
- Close the game, content pipeline, IDE, and launcher.
- Run the downloaded Microsoft installer.
- Select Repair if the runtime is already installed, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application again.
The current Visual C++ 2015–2022 package should not automatically be treated as a replacement for the older 2013 runtime. If the application specifically depends on MSVCR120.dll, install the matching 2013 package.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than the named MojoShader file.
For a developer tool, inspect the application’s own DLL with Visual Studio’s Developer Command Prompt:
dumpbin /DEPENDENTS "C:PathToYourApplibmojoshader_64.dll"
Replace the path with the actual location. Review the output for missing Microsoft runtime libraries or other native files. If the tool reports MSVCR120.dll, install the Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable as described above.

You can also inspect:
- The application’s log folder.
- Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
- The launcher’s repair or diagnostic log.
- The exact DLL name, process name, and installation path.
Do not copy a dependency from another application. Two files with the same name can have different exports, builds, or runtime requirements.
Fix 6: Confirm architecture and installation location
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit MojoShader library, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit replacement.
Check the executable in Task Manager:
- Start the application if it remains open.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides that column.
- Compare the process architecture with the library name and the runtime package you installed.
You can also check the application’s documentation or installer. Restore the file from the same product and release rather than relying on the filename alone.
If the application is installed on a network share, removable drive, or unusual filesystem, reinstall it to a local NTFS drive. An incomplete update, access restriction, or unavailable drive can produce the same loader error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 7: Repair Windows components only when broader problems exist
SFC and DISM do not normally recreate a third-party game DLL. Use them when Windows itself shows corruption, multiple built-in applications fail, or other system files are also damaged.
Open an elevated terminal:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft describes the process in its System File Checker instructions and DISM documentation.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to the application’s repair or reinstall process.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the owning game or tool remains the definitive fix for its missing DLL.

Fix 8: Update graphics drivers only when diagnostics point there
MojoShader is associated with graphics rendering, but a graphics-driver reinstall is not the normal fix for a missing application DLL. Use this step when the game also reports driver crashes, Direct3D or OpenGL initialization failures, display corruption, or a driver error in Event Viewer.
To check manually:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean vendor reinstall, download the driver only from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page, choose the correct Windows architecture, and select the installer’s clean-install option if provided.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which of several installed drivers is stale; its free scan shows reported issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. This remains separate from restoring the application’s own mojoshader.dll.
What not to do
- Do not download
mojoshader.dllfrom random DLL websites. The file may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, export incompatible functions, or leave the real dependency problem unresolved. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not copy it from another game. A renamed or customized build may not work.
- Do not use
regsvr32for this file.regsvr32is intended for COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points, while MojoShader is normally loaded directly by the application. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in itsregsvr32reference. - Do not randomly enable or disable Windows Features. .NET, DirectX components, and graphics drivers are separate from the application-owned MojoShader library unless the program’s own documentation identifies them as a requirement.
Frequently asked questions
Is mojoshader.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is normally a native library bundled by a game, MonoGame tool, FNA application, or another third-party program.
Should I register mojoshader.dll?
No. Running regsvr32 is not a repair method for a shader-conversion library and can create misleading registration or entry-point errors.
Why does MonoGame mention libmojoshader_64.dll instead?
MonoGame packages commonly use architecture-specific names such as libmojoshader_64.dll and libmojoshader_32.dll. The filename differs from the MojoShader.dll commonly seen in some FNA-based games, but the correct repair is still tied to the owning application.
Does installing DirectX fix this error?
Not usually. Install DirectX only when the application’s own documentation or diagnostic output identifies a DirectX component as missing. Start with application verification and the required Visual C++ runtime.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Record the exact executable name, full installation path, architecture, launcher log, Event Viewer error, and dependency list. Send those details to the game or tool vendor. The shipped package itself may be incomplete or defective.
