AI-generated and human-made game art differ chiefly in how the images are produced, who directs the creative choices, and what can be established about their provenance and rights. The label alone does not tell you whether an asset is good, consistent with a game, or ethically produced: evaluate the actual workflow and finished work separately.
What distinguishes AI-generated art from human-made art?
“AI-generated” and “human-made” describe production processes, not necessarily recognizable visual styles. A human might draw or model an asset directly, use a generative system to make an image, or combine the two—for example, by generating an initial image and then substantially editing it. A broad label such as “AI-assisted” does not explain which parts people made or controlled.

To understand a particular asset, ask what the tool did, what decisions a person made, and how the result was revised and incorporated into the game. Appearance alone is not a reliable way to infer the complete workflow.
How to compare the two approaches
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Production and creative control | Did people draw or model the asset directly, use generative tools, or combine methods? Which choices and revisions were made by people? |
| Iteration and consistency | Does the art work coherently across characters, environments, UI, and other parts of the game? How did the team manage revisions and visual consistency? These outcomes depend on the project; the available sources do not establish that either method is universally faster, cheaper, more consistent, or more expressive. |
| Provenance and rights | What sources, licenses, contracts, records, and human contributions apply to this particular work? The production label by itself does not settle its legal status. |
| Disclosure | What does the relevant platform require developers to disclose about content players encounter? Steam distinguishes between pre-generated and live-generated AI content. |
| Labor and ethics | How does the process relate to artists’ work, training-data disclosure, ownership, and compensation? Views differ, and a survey of artists should not be treated as a census of the game-art workforce. |
Can you tell if game art was made with AI?
Not reliably from appearance alone. A finished image may not reveal whether it was generated, hand-made, or produced through a mixed workflow. Even when an image seems to have familiar visual traits, those traits do not establish how it was made. If the distinction matters to you, look for a developer’s process disclosure or other documentation rather than treating visual inspection as proof.

Does Steam require games to disclose AI-generated art?
Steam’s Content Survey focuses on generative AI used to create content that ships with a game and is consumed by players; artwork is one example. It distinguishes two cases in its official Content Survey:
- Pre-generated content: content made with AI tools during development and shipped for players to consume.
- Live-generated content: content created with AI while the game is running. Developers must describe safeguards intended to prevent illegal output.
Steam says its prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output by the same standard as non-AI content. Disclosure is not an exemption from the platform’s content rules. The survey also says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section,” distinguishing player-facing content from tools used only to improve development efficiency. Because submission guidance can change, developers should consult the current survey when preparing a submission.

What do artists’ views tell us about the debate?
A 2024 study by Lovato, Zimmerman, Smith, Dodds, and Karson surveyed 459 artists about generative AI art, including its potential utility and risks, training-data disclosure, ownership, and compensation. It was a convenience survey, not a representative measure of all artists or game artists. In the study:
- 61.87% of participants agreed that AI models are a threat to art workers.
- 44.88% agreed that AI art models are a positive development in the field.
- 80.17% agreed that model creators should disclose in detail the art and images used to train models.
Some participants agreed with both the positive-development and threat statements. These responses describe the study’s participants; they are not measurements of art quality, employment effects, or overall public opinion. The study is available as Artists’ Perspectives on the Opportunities and Challenges in the Art Industry: A Survey Study.

What does U.S. copyright guidance say about AI-generated art?
The U.S. Copyright Office’s multipart report addresses copyright questions raised by AI. Part 2, published January 29, 2025, concerns the copyrightability of outputs created using generative AI. Its AI report overview is not a decision about a particular game asset, contract, or dispute, and it does not answer legal questions for every country. Whether a specific work is protected or who holds relevant rights requires looking at the work and its circumstances; the label “AI-generated” alone does not settle the answer.

Separate three questions: does the finished art work for you, is the production process described clearly enough for your needs, and do you approve of the values or labor practices associated with that process? One answer does not determine the others. AI use alone does not prove that a game’s art is low quality or that its developer acted improperly; likewise, a human-made label alone does not establish provenance, rights, or artistic merit.
