The key distinction is that a blind box describes how a figure is packaged and sold, while “trading figure” describes a collectible category: trading figures can be sold either randomly or with the character identified.
What’s the difference between a blind box and a trading figure?
A blind box is a purchase format: the contents are hidden until you open the package. A trading figure is a small collectible figure, often released as part of a character lineup. The term alone does not tell you whether the character is known before purchase. A sealed trading figure may be random, while an opened or confirmed listing identifies the figure you will receive. For a useful comparison, think of the choice as random blind-box buying versus buying a confirmed figure.
How do the buying formats compare?

When is a blind box the better fit?
- You enjoy the reveal as much as owning the figure.
- You like several characters in the lineup, rather than wanting only one specific design.
- You can tolerate a duplicate or an unwanted result, or have a way to trade it.
- You are buying for someone who enjoys surprises and has not requested a particular character.
Some series include common designs and rarer chase or secret figures. Check the current packaging or official product listing for that series if odds or lineup details matter to you; do not assume that another brand’s odds presentation applies.
When should you buy a confirmed figure instead?
- You have a favorite character and would be disappointed with other results.
- You are completing a collection and want a specific missing design.
- You are buying a gift for someone who wants one exact character.
- You would rather pay the listed price for a known figure than risk spending on several random boxes.
A confirmed figure trades the opening surprise for certainty. Check the seller, condition, included accessories or cards, and current asking price. Secondary-market prices can differ from a figure’s original retail context, and a high price does not establish that the figure will gain value.

Does buying a sealed case guarantee a full set?
No—not without checking the exact case description. A case holds multiple boxes, and an assortment may be arranged to reduce duplicates, but case sizes and contents vary. A secret figure is not guaranteed, and you should not assume a case includes every standard design unless the product listing explicitly says so. StockX’s guide describes these marketplace formats, but its guidance is not a universal promise for every brand or retailer.
What should you check before buying?
- Identify the format. Confirm whether the listing is for a sealed random box, an opened and identified figure, or a full case.
- Match the series and design. Check the series name and, for a confirmed figure, the exact character shown and named.
- Check what is included. Review the listing for accessories, cards, packaging, and any other items you expect to receive.
- Assess condition and seller. Read the condition description and seller information, especially for opened or secondary-market figures. Requirements differ by marketplace; StockX’s conditions for its opened listings should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
- Compare the total outlay with your goal. If you want one character, weigh the confirmed figure’s asking price against the realistic cost of multiple random purchases—not just the price of one box.
Are blind-box figures a good investment?
Do not buy on the assumption of resale profit. A rare figure may command a higher asking price on a secondary marketplace, but that does not establish future value or reliable returns. Treat collecting as a personal purchase: choose the format that fits your enjoyment, collection goals, and budget.
