Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program fails: AIMP itself, a skin, a plugin, or another component
- When the error appears: during startup, after an update, or only when loading an add-on
- The exact wording: “missing,” “not found,” “specified module could not be found,” or an access violation
- Your AIMP generation: older AIMP3 or a newer AIMP release
- The application architecture: older AIMP3 installations are 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows
- The installation folder: usually the folder containing the AIMP executable

aimp.runtime.dll is an AIMP Runtime Library file associated especially with AIMP3, the Windows music player. It is an application DLL, not a Windows component, and should normally remain beside the AIMP executable rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The safest repair is to restore the complete AIMP installation from AIMP’s official Windows download page. Do not begin by downloading this DLL from a random file site.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the matching AIMP build
This is the fastest and most reliable fix when the file is genuinely missing, damaged, or incompatible with neighboring AIMP files.

The exact version must match the AIMP build. A documented AIMP3 record lists version 3.6.0.1492; other public records list 3.6.0.1502, but neither should be treated as a universal replacement for every installation.
Reinstall AIMP safely
- Close AIMP.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select any remaining AIMP process and choose End task.
- Back up important playlists, settings, and custom skins if you know where they are stored.
- Open a browser and go to the official AIMP Windows download page by entering
aimp.ruyourself. - If the affected program is AIMP3, use the official old-version archive rather than forcing a current package over the old installation.
- Choose the same architecture as the installed application. AIMP3 is an x86, 32-bit release.
- Run the installer.
- If it offers Repair, choose that. Otherwise, reinstall over the existing AIMP directory.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AIMP before restoring skins, plugins, or profile files.
A successful repair normally means AIMP opens without the DLL message and the file appears in the application’s own installation directory. If the installer reports that the program is already installed, uninstalling AIMP and reinstalling it is the next step, but preserve your profile and playlists first.
Do not copy a newer aimp.runtime.dll into an older AIMP3 folder. Mixing files from different releases can replace one error with crashes or version conflicts.

Security software can remove an application file after an installation, update, or later scan. Do not disable antivirus protection globally.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving AIMP or
aimp.runtime.dll. - Expand the event and check its path.
- Restore the file only if the installer came from the official AIMP source and the detected file is clearly the AIMP installation file.
- If Windows Security offers Allow on device, use it only after verifying that provenance.
- Reinstall AIMP from the official source after restoring or allowing the file.
If the file immediately disappears again, stop launching AIMP and perform a full security scan. A repeated detection may indicate a modified installer, a compromised installation, or a false positive that needs investigation.
After restoring the file, launch AIMP before reinstalling third-party plugins. If AIMP works until one add-on is installed, the add-on is the more likely cause.
Fix 3: Confirm that the error is really about a missing file
Windows messages are not always precise. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that aimp.runtime.dll is present but one of its dependent files is absent.
Possible messages include:
- “The program can’t start because aimp.runtime.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because aimp.runtime.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting aimp.runtime.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “aimp.runtime.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Check the AIMP installation folder in File Explorer. If the file is absent, reinstall the complete application. If it is present, do not download another copy immediately. A dependency, mismatched AIMP file, blocked file, or incompatible add-on may be responsible.

A crash report naming AIMP.Runtime.dll also does not prove that the DLL is missing. Access violations and runtime errors can occur when a skin or plugin calls AIMP incorrectly.
Fix 4: Remove a recently installed skin or plugin
If AIMP opens normally but crashes when loading a particular skin, plugin, or profile, the add-on is a stronger suspect than the runtime DLL.
AIMP forum cases document crashes involving AIMP.Runtime.dll while loading skins and using plugins. The module name identifies where Windows detected the failure, not necessarily the original cause.
Test without add-ons
- Close AIMP completely.
- Open the AIMP profile directory.
- Move the recently installed skin or plugin to a temporary folder outside the AIMP profile.
- Do not delete it yet.
- Start AIMP.
- Test playback and normal navigation.
- Add skins and plugins back one at a time.
- Stop when the crash returns.
- Remove or replace the add-on that triggered the failure.
If a fresh AIMP installation works until you restore the old profile, the problem is probably stored configuration or third-party content. Keep the clean profile and import settings selectively rather than copying the entire old profile back at once.
Fix 5: Check architecture and mixed installation files
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit AIMP build. Windows bitness alone is not a reason to download a 64-bit DLL.
For an older AIMP3 installation:
- The application is generally x86, or 32-bit.
- The associated documented runtime DLL is Win32.
- The DLL belongs beside the 32-bit AIMP executable.
- A 64-bit replacement is not an appropriate substitute.
Mixed files can result from copying an AIMP folder between computers, restoring an incomplete backup, interrupting an update, or installing a newer release over an old directory.
The practical fix is to identify the AIMP version you intend to use and reinstall that complete release. Do not replace individual files from public DLL indexes. The installer must restore the executable, runtime library, configuration components, and supporting files as a matching set.
Fix 6: Repair wider Windows corruption
Windows repair commands do not normally recreate an AIMP-owned DLL. Use them when other Windows components are also malfunctioning, updates fail, system files are damaged, or several unrelated applications have begun crashing.

Run DISM, then System File Checker
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test AIMP again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling AIMP. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but AIMP still fails, return to the AIMP repair and add-on checks.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Fix 7: Update drivers only when symptoms are broader
A driver is not the normal cause of a missing aimp.runtime.dll file. Consider driver troubleshooting only if AIMP crashes alongside audio dropouts, device failures, system instability, or problems in other media applications.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test AIMP again.
Prefer the audio device manufacturer or computer manufacturer for a driver package when Windows does not find one. Do not install a driver merely because the DLL error mentions AIMP.
Finding a stale driver manually can mean checking the hardware model, Windows compatibility, and several vendor download pages. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically ActiveX or COM components. There is no evidence that aimp.runtime.dll is a self-registering Windows component.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 aimp.runtime.dll

They may produce an entry-point error and will not restore a missing dependency, repair a damaged AIMP installation, or make an incompatible plugin work.
Do not place the DLL in System32 or SysWOW64. Application-private runtime files belong with the application that owns them.
Avoid standalone DLL downloads
A random DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, a different build, or a modified file. Even a genuine-looking copy may not fix the missing dependency that caused the loader message.

Use the official AIMP installer or its official old-version archive instead. Reinstalling the complete application restores related files together and preserves the version relationship that a manually copied DLL cannot guarantee.
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is also not the first remedy for this filename. Those are separate Microsoft runtime families. aimp.runtime.dll is associated with AIMP, so repair the owning application first.
If nothing works
Use System Restore only when the failure began after a known system change and reinstalling AIMP did not help. Open Start, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, choose a restore point, and review the affected programs before confirming. Personal files are not normally removed, but recently installed applications, drivers, updates, and settings may be rolled back.
For further diagnosis, record:
- The exact error text
- AIMP and Windows versions
- Whether the AIMP build is x86 or x64
- The installation path
- Whether the problem began after an update or cleanup
- Any antivirus event
- Whether AIMP alone fails or only a plugin or skin
- The faulting application and module from Event Viewer
The name AIMP.Runtime.dll in a crash report is not enough to identify the cause. A clean official installation that works before add-ons or profile data are restored is the clearest sign that the original problem was damaged configuration or incompatible third-party content.

Is aimp.runtime.dll a Windows file?
No. Available file records associate it with AIMP, particularly AIMP3. It should not normally be installed in a Windows system directory.

Normally no. It is not established as a self-registering ActiveX or COM DLL, and registration does not repair missing dependencies.
Why does AIMP crash only when I select a skin?
A skin or plugin may be incompatible with the installed AIMP build. Remove the add-on, confirm that the clean installation works, then install only a compatible version.
What if reinstalling AIMP does not restore the file?
