“rarext.dll is missing” — what the error means

rarext.dll is a WinRAR shell-extension component, not a Windows system DLL. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete WinRAR installation from the official RARLAB download page rather than downloading this DLL separately.

The 60-second fix
- Close WinRAR and all File Explorer windows.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find WinRAR, select the three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair if that option is available.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, uninstall WinRAR.
- Download the matching 32-bit or 64-bit installer from RARLAB’s official WinRAR download page.
- Reinstall WinRAR and enable Shell Integration during setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Open a RAR file or right-click one in File Explorer and test the WinRAR commands.
If WinRAR itself opens but its Explorer commands are missing, the installation may be intact while Shell Integration is disabled or damaged.

What rarext.dll does

It normally belongs inside the WinRAR installation folder, commonly:
C:Program FilesWinRAR
A 32-bit installation commonly uses:
C:Program Files (x86)WinRAR
The exact file arrangement depends on the WinRAR release. Older installations may contain related names such as RarExt32.dll or RarExt64.dll, so do not identify the architecture from the filename alone.
This file is not supplied by Windows, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. Installing one of those packages is not the normal solution.

Why the error started
The most likely causes are:
- A damaged or incomplete WinRAR installation
- WinRAR was partially uninstalled or updated
- Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file
- A 32-bit and 64-bit WinRAR file set became mixed
- Explorer Shell Integration was disabled or corrupted
- A required dependency is missing even though
RarExt.dllis present - The file is an impostor in an unrelated folder
- Broader Windows corruption is interfering with installation or Explorer
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall WinRAR
Try the Windows repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Find WinRAR.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows after the repair finishes.
Test both WinRAR and File Explorer. Right-click a RAR or ZIP file and check whether the WinRAR commands are available.
Desktop WinRAR installations may instead use the traditional repair path:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:

appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select WinRAR.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent maintenance option.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows.
Reinstall the complete package
If repair is unavailable or the error returns:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall WinRAR.
- Restart Windows.
- Download WinRAR only from the official RARLAB download page.
- Choose the installer architecture that matches the WinRAR installation you intend to use.
- Run the installer.
- Enable Shell Integration when the setup program offers that option.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows again.
Do not copy RarExt.dll from another computer or from another WinRAR release. A copied file can have incompatible exports, registration data, or architecture even when its name matches.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have removed the file, especially if the error began immediately after a scan or update.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving WinRAR or
RarExt.dll. - Check the detected file path and detection details.
Do not automatically restore the file. First confirm that it came from the expected WinRAR directory and that the WinRAR installation itself was obtained from the official source. Reinstalling the complete package is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
If the file is in a temporary folder, Downloads, an unrelated application folder, or a game directory, treat it as suspicious. Remove it and run a full scan. If Windows Security reports a serious threat, use the available offline scan option rather than creating an exclusion just to make WinRAR run.

Fix 3: Confirm the file path and digital signature
A legitimate-looking filename is not enough.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the WinRAR directory, usually:
C:Program FilesWinRAR - If you use a 32-bit installation, check:
C:Program Files (x86)WinRAR - Right-click
RarExt.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
The displayed publisher metadata can vary between releases and databases. Public file listings commonly associate the component with WinRAR and Alexander Roshal or win.rar GmbH, but those fields are not a substitute for checking the path, signature, and installer provenance.
If the file exists outside a WinRAR directory, do not move it into System32, SysWOW64, or another application folder. Scan it and reinstall WinRAR from the official source.
Fix 4: Match the WinRAR architecture
A 32-bit application cannot reliably use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement, and the reverse is also true. A mixed installation can produce errors even when RarExt.dll is present.
Check which WinRAR installation is being used:
- Open WinRAR.
- Select Help > About WinRAR.
- Review the architecture and version shown in the About window.
- Uninstall the damaged installation.
- Install the matching package from the official WinRAR download page.
Do not use the filename alone to decide whether a file is 32-bit or 64-bit. The release may use different related filenames, and a replacement from another release may still be incompatible.

Some public archive listings associate RarExt.dll with entries such as 64-bit version 5.90.0.0 at about 0.52 MB, 32-bit version 5.80.0.0 at about 0.44 MB, and other 32-bit and 64-bit releases. These are third-party metadata listings, not an official RARLAB compatibility table. File size is not a reliable authenticity test.

Fix 5: Restore Explorer Shell Integration
If WinRAR opens normally but the right-click menu is missing, the DLL may not be missing at all.
- Open WinRAR.
- Select Options > Settings.
- Open the Integration tab.
- Enable the Windows Explorer integration or shell integration options.
- Apply the changes.
- Close and reopen File Explorer.
On Windows 11, some commands may appear under Show more options in the right-click menu. Check there before assuming the integration is broken.
If the Integration settings are unavailable or changes do not persist, reinstall WinRAR. The installer can restore the complete shell-extension files and their associated configuration.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components when installation is failing
RarExt.dll is a third-party WinRAR file, so System File Checker normally will not replace it. DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged and that damage prevents installers, Explorer, or app repair from working correctly.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall WinRAR again.

Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Reinstalling WinRAR remains the definitive fix when the missing component belongs to WinRAR.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the wider problem points there
A driver is not normally required to restore RarExt.dll. However, if Explorer is crashing, storage devices are reporting errors, or Windows began failing after a hardware or system update, check drivers after repairing WinRAR.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Storage controllers, Display adapters, and System devices.
- Right-click a device showing a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not replace a WinRAR DLL with a driver package. Use System Restore when:
- The problem began after an update or failed installation
- WinRAR repair and reinstall did not help
- A restore point clearly predates the problem

Other Explorer or installer functions are also failing

Press Windows + R.
- Enter:

rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Test WinRAR after Windows restarts.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings and normally does not remove personal files. It may, however, remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain the limitations.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command.

regsvr32 RarExt.dll
Running it from the wrong directory or with the wrong architecture can produce another error without repairing Explorer. Use WinRAR’s own Integration settings or reinstall the complete WinRAR package instead.
Should you download rarext.dll separately?
Normally, no. Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong WinRAR release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- A file that does not match the rest of the installation
- A replacement that leaves the original corruption untouched
Do not place the file in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a game folder, or a general application directory. The safe source is the official WinRAR installer from RARLAB, followed by a complete reinstall.

FAQ
Is rarext.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with WinRAR’s Windows Explorer shell integration.
Is it installed by Visual C++ Redistributable?
There is no evidence that Visual C++ Redistributable installs this file. Repair WinRAR first.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
That wording can mean a dependency of RarExt.dll is missing. Reinstall the complete WinRAR package instead of copying only the named file.
WinRAR opens, but the right-click menu is missing. Is the DLL broken?
Not necessarily. Shell Integration may be disabled, damaged, or hidden under Show more options on Windows 11. Check WinRAR’s Options > Settings > Integration page.
Should I run SFC to restore the file?
SFC checks protected Windows files. It normally does not restore a missing third-party WinRAR DLL. Use it only for broader Windows corruption, then reinstall WinRAR.
What if the problem returns after every restart?
Check antivirus history, permissions, disk health, and malware scans. If the file disappears again, do not create an antivirus exclusion until its provenance has been verified.
What if the file is outside the WinRAR folder?
Do not trust it automatically. Check its signature, scan it, and remove or quarantine suspicious copies before reinstalling WinRAR from the official source.
