If your AirPods appear in Bluetooth but will not connect or play sound, pairing has probably been saved while the active audio connection failed. The fastest fix is to update the host device, charge both earbuds, turn on Bluetooth, select AirPods as the audio output, and then pair them again manually. If that fails, use the reset sequence for your case design. This guide covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, rear-button cases, newer front-touch cases, firmware updates, account ownership, and cases that may need replacement.
Why do AirPods show as paired but still refuse to connect?
Bluetooth pairing only records that a device is known. It does not guarantee that the earbuds are currently awake, charged, selected for audio, or compatible with the host device’s software. An AirPods entry can therefore remain visible while sound is still routed to the iPhone speaker, another headset, or the Mac’s internal output.

- Update the host device. Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS. An old system can prevent setup for newer AirPods generations even when Bluetooth is enabled.
- Charge both earbuds. Put both AirPods in their case and verify that each one is charging. A single earbud with a poor contact can make the set appear available but fail during connection.
- Turn on Bluetooth. Open Settings > Bluetooth and confirm Bluetooth is enabled. If it is already on, leave it enabled while you continue.
- Select AirPods as the output. Remove the earbuds, put them in your ears, open Control Center, tap the audio-output control, and choose your AirPods. Start playback and raise the device volume. This step fixes cases where AirPods are connected for control but not selected for sound.
How do I manually reconnect AirPods that appear in Bluetooth?
Manual pairing forces the case to advertise the earbuds again instead of relying on the saved entry.
- Return both AirPods to the charging case, close the lid, and wait 15 seconds.
- Open the lid and keep the case next to the unlocked iPhone or iPad.
- For AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3, double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- For older listed AirPods and AirPods Pro models with a rear setup button, press and hold that button until the light flashes white.
- Follow the pairing prompt on screen. If no prompt appears, open Settings > Bluetooth and select the AirPods from the device list.
A white flashing light means the case is ready to pair. If the light never reaches that state, continue to the model-specific reset rather than repeating the same pairing attempt.

Resetting clears the connection state and is different from simply closing the case. Use the sequence that matches your AirPods generation and case.

After the reset light pattern, keep the open case beside the iPhone or iPad and pair it as a new Bluetooth device. Resetting removes the old connection state, so automatic reconnection will not resume until setup is completed again.

Should I restart the AirPods or use “Forget This Device”?
A restart is the lighter intervention and should come before forgetting the device. Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid for at least 10 seconds, then reopen it and try the output-selection step again.
Use Forget This Device only when the saved pairing continues to fail after a restart. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the AirPods, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. Pair them again afterward. Forgetting removes the AirPods from devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so other Apple devices on that account will also require a fresh pairing state.
How do I reconnect AirPods to a Mac?
The hardware steps are the same, but audio output and Bluetooth controls use macOS labels.
- Install the latest available macOS update.
- Place both AirPods in the case and confirm they are charging.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Use the rear-button or front-touch pairing gesture for your model until the light flashes white.
- Select the AirPods in the Bluetooth list and complete pairing.
- Open the Mac’s sound or Control Center controls and choose the AirPods as the output device before testing audio.
If the Mac lists AirPods as connected but sound remains on the computer, manually selecting them in the sound controls is the important step. If they do not appear at all, repeat pairing mode after closing the case for 15 seconds.

What if the AirPods case has no response?
A case that will not show a charging status, enter white-flashing pairing mode, or complete the amber-then-white reset is a stronger sign of a power or case fault than a Bluetooth setting problem.
- Connect the case to power and leave both earbuds inside while checking whether the charging indicator changes.
- Confirm both earbuds sit correctly in their charging wells; debris or a poor fit can leave one earbud without power.
- Retry the appropriate reset only after the case has had time to charge.
- If the case still cannot charge or reset, a model-matched replacement charging case is the clearest hardware path. Match the AirPods generation and charging-port version before ordering, because a case for a different model may not pair or charge correctly.
Once a replacement case is available, place both existing earbuds in it and follow the normal pairing process. A replacement case does not remove an Apple Account association from AirPods previously owned by somebody else.

AirPods firmware is delivered automatically rather than installed through a manual download. To give an update the conditions it needs, use an updated iPhone, iPad, or Mac with Bluetooth on and Wi‑Fi connected; connect the charging case to power; put both AirPods inside; close the lid; and keep the case within Bluetooth range.
Leave that setup undisturbed for at least 30 minutes before checking again. Then reopen the case, reconnect the AirPods, and check the firmware entry in the AirPods’ About section. Firmware updating is not an instant repair, but it can resolve compatibility or stability issues after the host operating system has been updated.

Which AirPods models use a different procedure?
Do not apply an earbud-case reset to AirPods Max. AirPods Max use their own restart and reset controls involving the Digital Crown and listening-mode button, so follow the procedure for that model instead.
For standard AirPods and AirPods Pro, the key distinction is the case. Older listed generations use a physical setup button on the rear; AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3 use the front double-tap interaction. Identifying the case before starting prevents an apparently failed reset caused by using the wrong gesture.
Can an old operating system or another owner block setup?
Yes. Apple lists minimum iOS versions for each AirPods generation, so Bluetooth being available does not prove that the host software supports the earbuds. Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac before troubleshooting deeper connection states.
AirPods previously used by another person also need to be removed from that person’s Apple Account for full use of account-linked features and automatic behavior. The previous owner should remove them from their account before you attempt to make them your primary pair.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek service?
Service is appropriate when updated host software, confirmed charging, manual pairing, the correct reset sequence, and a firmware-update attempt have all failed, especially if the case cannot power on or complete its light pattern.
If the earbuds work in another compatible host but not one particular iPhone, iPad, or Mac, focus on that host’s updates, Bluetooth settings, and audio-output selection. If they fail across compatible hosts and the case cannot charge or reset, hardware service or a correctly matched replacement case is more likely to help than further software toggles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AirPods that are still linked to a previous owner?
The previous owner must remove the AirPods from their Apple Account before you can use all account-dependent features normally. Ask that person to complete the removal while the AirPods are still associated with their account, then reset and pair the earbuds to your device.
Will forgetting AirPods on my iPhone remove them from my other Apple devices?
Yes. Choosing “Forget This Device” removes the AirPods from devices signed in to the same Apple Account. You will need to pair them again on those devices rather than relying on the old saved entry.
Where can I see the installed AirPods firmware version?
After the AirPods reconnect, open the AirPods entry in the device’s About information and look for the firmware field. If the version has not changed, leave the charging case powered, closed, and within Bluetooth range of a Wi‑Fi-connected host for another update cycle.
