Alan Wake 2’s “DEVICE REMOVED,” “DEVICE REMOVED UINT64_MAX,” or “the game crashed due to a graphics card (GPU) fault and will now exit” message means Windows reported that the game’s graphics device was reset, hung, or became unavailable. The most reliable first fix is Epic Games’ Alan Wake 2 procedure: open AlanWake2.exe in the installation folder, enable Disable full-screen optimizations in its Compatibility settings, and relaunch. If the crash continues, turn off optional performance boosts and game-optimization features in your GPU control-center app, then verify the vendor driver and record reproducible details for support.
There is no single confirmed cause for every PC. A driver timeout, unstable hardware, invalid GPU work, or an application-specific rendering failure can all produce a device-lost condition, so use the least invasive tests first.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What does “Device Removed” mean in Alan Wake 2?
“Device removed” is a DirectX graphics-device loss or reset, not a normal gameplay error. Microsoft documents DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED and DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET as conditions in which the graphics adapter is no longer usable by the current rendering context. The application must release invalid device-dependent resources and recreate them; if recovery fails, the game exits.
Epic’s GPU-crash guidance notes that DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED can accompany a GPU hang. The CPU line where the error is caught may be only where the failure was noticed, not where the underlying problem began. That is why the same Alan Wake 2 message can result from a driver reset, unstable hardware, excessive resource pressure, or a rendering workload that the application could not recover from.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The UINT64_MAX text is an identifier attached to some crash reports, not a separate diagnosis. Treat it as part of the same device-removed investigation rather than as proof of one particular component failure.
How do I apply Epic’s official Alan Wake 2 fix?
Epic’s Alan Wake 2 support article starts with an executable compatibility change. It is reversible and does not modify your save files or graphics hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the installation folder. In the Epic Games Launcher, locate Alan Wake 2 in your Library and use the launcher’s option to open or browse the game’s installation directory.
- Find the game executable. Locate
AlanWake2.exe, right-click it, and choose Properties (the label may appear as Settings on some Windows builds). - Open Compatibility. Select the Compatibility tab.
- Disable full-screen optimizations. Check Disable full-screen optimizations, choose Apply, then OK.
- Relaunch the game. Start Alan Wake 2 normally from the Epic Games Launcher and try to reproduce the location or action that previously crashed.
Use the same executable that the launcher starts. Applying the setting to a shortcut, a different copy, or a launcher helper will not test the game process that is failing.
What should I do if the executable setting does not stop the crash?
Turn off optional GPU-control-center activities
Epic’s fallback instruction is to disable optional features in the application supplied with your graphics driver. Examples named by Epic include performance boosts and game-optimization activities in NVIDIA Game Ready and AMD Adrenalin software. Disable those enhancements temporarily, restart the game, and test the same reproducible scenario.

This is a diagnostic change, not a recommendation to remove the control-center application. Keep a note of which option you changed so you can restore it after testing. If the crash disappears, re-enable features one at a time to identify the setting that conflicts with the game.
Check the driver directly with the GPU vendor
The Alan Wake 2 FAQ tells players to use the latest relevant driver for their hardware, and Epic’s technical guidance gives the same advice when investigating GPU crashes. Check the driver version shown by your GPU control center or Windows, then compare it with the current package offered by your GPU manufacturer. Record the version before and after any update.
A driver check is useful even when the game worked previously: a recent operating-system or driver change can alter how a device reset is handled. Do not assume that the error itself identifies NVIDIA, AMD, or another vendor as the cause; the message describes the failure class, not ownership of the fault.
Can changing display mode help with DEVICE REMOVED UINT64_MAX?
Alan Wake 2’s PC FAQ lists fullscreen, windowed, and borderless display modes. A community report says switching from fullscreen to borderless helped some players with a DEVICE REMOVED UINT64_MAX crash. That report is anecdotal, so treat the change as a reversible test rather than a guaranteed fix.

- Start the game and open its display or graphics settings.
- Change fullscreen to borderless (or, if already borderless, test windowed).
- Apply the setting, restart the game, and repeat the action that normally triggers the crash.
If borderless changes the result, include both the original and working display modes in a support report. A change in mode can help isolate presentation or window-management interactions, but it does not establish that the GPU hardware is defective.
How can I capture useful evidence before contacting support?
Epic recommends reproducible steps and logs for GPU-crash reports. Capture the following while the failure is fresh:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The complete on-screen error text, including whether it says “graphics card (GPU) fault,”
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, orUINT64_MAX. - Your GPU model and the installed graphics-driver version.
- The Alan Wake 2 version shown by the launcher.
- Display mode: fullscreen, windowed, or borderless.
- Whether ray tracing or path tracing is enabled, and which upscaling option is selected.
- The exact action and location that trigger the crash, along with whether it happens every time or only intermittently.
- Any compatibility or GPU-control-center setting changed during testing.
Describe a short reproduction such as “load a specific save, enter a named area, rotate the camera, and the game exits.” A repeatable sequence is more useful than a general statement that the game crashes randomly. Keep the original error wording intact; paraphrasing can remove the code support staff need.
Do Alan Wake 2’s SSD and graphics features affect this error?
They define the supported PC environment, but the available documentation does not establish them as universal cures for device removal.

| Requirement or feature | What the official FAQ establishes | How to use it in troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | “Alan Wake 2 requires an SSD.” | Confirm the installation is on an SSD. The requirement does not prove that moving an existing installation will fix a GPU reset. |
| PC download size | Approximately 86 GB. | Use the figure when checking available space and installation planning; it is not a crash-frequency or performance guarantee. |
| HDR | Supported on PC. | Record whether HDR is enabled when reporting a display-related reproduction. |
| Upscaling | DLSS and FSR2 are supported. | Include the selected upscaler in your report. Changing it can be a controlled diagnostic test, but the sources do not identify one option as a definitive fix. |
| Ray tracing and path tracing | Full ray tracing/path tracing requires a DirectX 12 GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing. | State whether these features are enabled and provide the GPU model; capability requirements do not by themselves explain every device reset. |
Do not infer that an SSD upgrade, a particular upscaler, or disabling ray tracing will cure every crash. Those changes may alter workload or compatibility, but the documented first-line intervention remains the executable compatibility setting, followed by disabling optional control-center activities and checking drivers.
Which troubleshooting step should I try first?
| Step | Authority | Reversibility | Primary diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|
Disable full-screen optimizations for AlanWake2.exe |
Epic’s Alan Wake 2-specific support procedure | High; uncheck the same box to undo it | Tests the game’s executable and Windows presentation behavior |
| Disable performance boosts or game optimizations in the GPU control center | Epic’s fallback guidance | High; restore each option after testing | Separates optional driver-layer features from the base game path |
| Install the latest relevant vendor driver | Alan Wake 2 FAQ and Epic technical guidance | Depends on the driver package | Checks for known driver fixes or reset-handling changes |
| Switch fullscreen to borderless or windowed | Community report, not an official guarantee | High; select the previous mode again | Tests display-mode and window-management interaction |
| Collect logs and a reproduction | Epic GPU-crash reporting guidance | Non-invasive | Gives support enough context to distinguish driver, application, and hardware hypotheses |
Run one change at a time when possible. If several settings change together, you may stop the crash without learning which condition mattered, making a later recurrence harder to diagnose.
When should I escalate to Epic Games Player Support?
Escalate after applying the executable setting, testing with optional GPU-control-center activities disabled, checking the driver, and recording a reproducible failure. Remedy’s support directory directs Alan Wake 2 players to Epic Games Player Support, so submit the case there rather than looking for a separate Remedy hardware-support queue.
Attach the exact error text and the details listed above. State which official steps you completed and whether each changed the result. If the desktop resolution changes after the crash, mention it: Microsoft notes that a graphics device removal or reset often causes a window-size change because the desktop resolution can change during recovery.

What can’t this error message tell you by itself?
It cannot identify a single universal cause, prove that the graphics card is physically damaged, or show how common the problem is. No authoritative frequency or benchmark figure is established for Alan Wake 2 device-removed crashes. The message tells you that the current graphics context was lost or reset; the driver version, hardware model, settings, logs, and repeatable trigger are needed to narrow the cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DEVICE REMOVED UINT64_MAX a different error from DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED?
They describe the same broad class of graphics-device loss in this troubleshooting context. UINT64_MAX is a value shown in some crash reports; it does not identify a specific GPU model, driver, or guaranteed remedy.
Will moving Alan Wake 2 to an SSD definitely stop the crash?
No. The PC FAQ requires SSD storage, so an HDD installation does not meet the stated requirement. That requirement is separate from proof that changing storage resolves a device-reset failure.
Does Alan Wake 2 support borderless and windowed modes on PC?
Yes. The FAQ lists fullscreen, windowed, and borderless modes. Borderless is a reasonable reversible diagnostic test when fullscreen reproduces the crash, although the supporting report is anecdotal.
What hardware is needed for full path tracing?
The official FAQ says full ray tracing and path tracing require a DirectX 12 GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing. Include your GPU model and whether those features are enabled when reporting a crash.
