It may be a normal sleep or Alienware Command Center lighting effect—or a model-specific diagnostic code. The key clues are your exact Alienware model, whether it boots, and whether the light repeats a countable color pattern.
Before replacing RAM or updating the BIOS, record the sequence and match it with the correct Dell service manual.
First, record exactly what the light is doing
“The power button keeps flashing” is not enough to identify the problem. Write down:
- Model: for example, Aurora, m15, m16, x16, or Area-51, including the generation.
- Boot status: does it reach Windows, show the Alienware logo, or remain on a black screen?
- Colors and counts: count the first color, the pause, then the second color.
- Other symptoms: fan activity, beeps, keyboard lighting, shutdowns, charging interruptions, or recent hardware and BIOS changes.
Film the light with your phone if the sequence is fast. A common diagnostic format is first-color flashes → pause → second-color flashes → longer pause → repeat.

Normal lighting or a diagnostic code?
| What you see | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Steady light while running | Usually a normal power state |
| Slow breathing or pulsing | Often sleep or a configured lighting effect |
| Brief flashing during startup or shutdown | May be normal model-specific behavior |
| Countable red/blue or amber groups repeating after pauses | Likely a diagnostic signal |
| Flashing with a black screen, failed POST, beeps, or sudden shutdowns | Treat it as a startup or hardware fault until decoded |
On some Alienware systems, ordinary LED colors and effects can be configured in Alienware Command Center. If the computer boots and works normally, open AWCC and inspect the active lighting profile. A configurable effect should not be confused with a POST diagnostic code. Dell documents ordinary solid, breathing, and off states, but behavior varies by model. See Dell’s Alienware diagnostic-light documentation.
Safe first steps
- Disconnect accessories. Shut down and remove USB drives, docks, external monitors, printers, memory cards, and other peripherals. Reconnect them individually after testing.
- Check power. Test the wall outlet, inspect the cable and adapter, and confirm a laptop adapter’s indicator stays on when connected. On a desktop, check the power-supply diagnostic light or button if equipped.
- Perform the correct power reset. For a desktop, disconnect the power cable and accessories, hold the power button for about 30–35 seconds, reconnect power, and test. Dell notes that holding it for less than 30 seconds or more than 35 seconds aborts that residual-power procedure. Do not assume this is the same as an RTC reset on every laptop.
- Run preboot diagnostics. On many Alienware desktops, tap F12 at the Dell or Alienware logo and select Diagnostics. On many laptops, hold Fn while pressing the power button. Keys and options vary by model.
For Dell’s startup troubleshooting flow, see Alienware computer does not turn on or go into Windows and Dell’s guide to no power, no POST, no boot, and no video problems.
Decode the pattern using the exact model manual
Enter your Service Tag at Dell Support, open your model’s manuals, and find System Diagnostic Lights or Diagnostic Indicators. An Aurora chart may not apply to an m16, and an m17 generation may use a different table from an x16.
Representative codes in Dell manuals include:
| Pattern | Meaning on applicable models |
|---|---|
| 2 red, 1 blue | Processor failure |
| 2 red, 2 blue | System-board BIOS or ROM failure |
| 2 red, 3 blue | No RAM detected |
| 2 red, 4 blue | RAM failure |
| 2 red, 5 blue | Invalid memory installed |
| 2 red, 6 blue | System-board or chipset error |
| 2 red, 7 blue | Display failure |
| 3 red, 1 blue | CMOS or RTC battery failure |
| 3 red, 2 blue | PCI or video-card/chip failure |
| 3 red, 3 blue | Recovery image not found |
| 3 red, 4 blue | Recovery image invalid |
| 3 red, 5 blue | Power-rail failure |
| 3 red, 6 blue | Incomplete system BIOS flash |
| 3 red, 7 blue | Management Engine error |
These are examples, not a universal Alienware code chart. Dell’s m17 R4 table and x16 table demonstrate why the exact model matters.
What to do for common codes
2 red and 3 blue: RAM not detected
On applicable Dell manuals, this pattern means memory was not detected. The cause may be poor seating, incompatible memory, a failed module, a damaged slot, or the motherboard—not necessarily a bad RAM stick.
If your model has removable memory, power it down, disconnect AC power, and follow its service manual. Reseat the modules, then test one module at a time in the recommended slot. Do not attempt this on a laptop with soldered memory, and check warranty guidance before opening the system. If the code remains, arrange service.

2 red and 4 blue: suspected RAM failure
Use the same model-approved single-module testing process. If both modules fail individually, or the code persists with known-good supported memory, the slot or board may be at fault.
BIOS, ROM, or recovery codes
A code for BIOS/ROM failure, an incomplete flash, or a missing or invalid recovery image should not trigger repeated forced shutdowns. Keep AC power connected and use Dell’s exact-model BIOS recovery instructions. If recovery cannot start, contact Dell rather than attempting random BIOS files.

Display or GPU codes
With fans and lights but no image, disconnect docks and external displays, then test an external monitor where supported. Run preboot diagnostics and record the code. A black screen can involve RAM, firmware, the GPU, display power, or the system board; do not assume the panel alone has failed.
Power-rail, processor, and system-board codes
Persistent codes for the processor, power rails, motherboard, or chipset generally require professional diagnosis. Stop immediately if there is a burning smell, smoke, sparking, melted plastic, liquid damage, severe overheating, or a damaged connector.
Area-51: the documented 1-red/4-blue exception
On the Alienware 16 Area-51 AA16250 and Alienware 18 Area-51 AA18250, Dell documents a repeating one red followed by four blue flashes as a false error that does not affect normal use. Restarting may restore the display, and Dell says BIOS version 2.0.1 or later resolves the issue. This exception applies to those specified models—not to Alienware systems generally. See Dell’s Area-51 advisory.
The same platforms have a separate documented black-screen case involving one red and six blue flashes; Dell identifies BIOS 1.0.1 or later as the fix for that embedded-controller watchdog issue. See the Dell 1-red/6-blue advisory.

When an RTC reset may help
On supported Alienware laptops, an RTC reset can help with no power, no POST, or no video. It restores BIOS defaults, resets the date and time, and may restart the computer several times. It can also leave Windows unable to boot until settings such as SATA mode are restored. Dell says the feature is model-dependent and may be unavailable when a BIOS administrator password is set.
For supported systems, Dell’s general procedure is to disconnect external devices, connect the AC adapter, hold the power button for approximately 30–35 seconds until the power LED blinks three times, then release it. Dell’s guidance also says the reset may abort below 25 seconds or above 40 seconds. Use your model manual as the authority and do not hold the button indefinitely. Details are in Dell’s RTC reset guide.
Should you update the BIOS?
Only update BIOS when Dell documents a relevant fix for your exact model and symptom, or when the model’s support page clearly requires it. The system should be stable enough to update, connected to AC power, backed up, and using the BIOS package obtained through its Service Tag or model page. Do not flash a BIOS merely because an unidentified LED is blinking, and never interrupt an update.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
- No lights, fans, or response: investigate the outlet, adapter, battery, desktop PSU, and power reset; escalate if there is still no response.
- Lights and fans but black screen: record the code, remove docks and displays, test an external monitor where supported, and run diagnostics.
- Alienware logo but Windows fails: use F12 Diagnostics and check whether the SSD is detected before reinstalling Windows.
- Code began after RAM installation: verify compatibility and seating using the exact manual.
- Code began after a BIOS update: follow model-specific recovery guidance and avoid repeated forced power-offs.
- Boots normally but keeps flashing: inspect AWCC, restart once, run diagnostics, and monitor for charging failures, shutdowns, overheating, or new beep codes.
When to contact Dell or a repair professional
Contact Dell/Alienware Support for a persistent diagnostic code, failed BIOS recovery, no-boot condition, suspected motherboard or PSU fault, or a system under warranty. Professional service is especially appropriate for soldered-memory systems and board-level display or power problems. Check warranty and service options before buying parts; a generic charger, RAM kit, motherboard, or “BIOS repair” utility may be the wrong solution.
Stop using the computer and seek service immediately for a swollen battery, smoke, sparks, burning odor, liquid exposure, melted plastic, severe overheating, or visible hinge/display-cable or power-connector damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Alienware power button flashing red and blue?
A grouped, repeating red/blue sequence is often a model-specific diagnostic code, while a smooth breathing effect may be normal lighting or sleep behavior. Count the flashes and check the exact Dell service manual.

What does 2 red and 3 blue mean?
On several applicable Alienware service manuals, 2 red followed by 3 blue means no RAM was detected. Reseating or testing removable memory may help, but the underlying cause can also be compatibility, a slot, or the motherboard.
Can Alienware Command Center stop the flashing?
Only if the light is an ordinary configurable lighting effect. AWCC cannot repair a POST diagnostic code.
Is it safe to hold the power button for 30 seconds?
For Dell desktop residual-power resets, the documented target is about 30–35 seconds after disconnecting power. Laptop RTC reset procedures are model-dependent, so follow the exact laptop guidance.
Do desktop and laptop Alienware codes mean the same thing?
No. Diagnostic tables vary by model and generation. Always use the manual for your Service Tag.
The Bottom Line
Count the pattern, identify the exact Alienware model, and decide whether the system boots. A breathing light may be normal; a repeating grouped code with no POST or no video needs the model’s Dell diagnostic table and safe troubleshooting. Avoid generic BIOS flashes or part purchases until the code is confirmed.
