It improves navigation, adds an Apps tab to Game Library, removes Armoury Crate’s Media Gallery, and introduces Xbox Gamepad Cursor Mode.
This is primarily a usability update—not a hardware upgrade. It does not add a new processor, increase the Ally’s specifications, or guarantee higher frame rates and longer battery life. Some features listed in ASUS’s combined changelog apply only to the newer 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models.
Which ROG Ally models are covered?
ASUS’s May 4, 2026 changelog covers four model families:
| Model | Identifier | ACSE 2.2.6.0 coverage |
|---|---|---|
| ROG Ally (2023) | RC71 | Yes |
| ROG Ally X (2024) | RC72 | Yes |
| ROG Xbox Ally (2025) | RC73YA | Yes |
| ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) | RC73XA | Yes |
For model identification and ASUS’s Armoury Crate SE support workflow, see the official ASUS support FAQ. The changelog is titled “May 2026,” although its body contains an apparent “May 2025” labeling error. The dated release post and April 30 availability date are the relevant references.

Because ASUS groups several generations into one changelog, do not assume that every listed feature is available on every Ally. “Ally X” and “ROG Xbox Ally X” are different products.
What Armoury Crate SE 2.2.6.0 adds
Better Settings navigation
The update reorganizes and improves navigation within the Settings page. The practical benefit is reduced friction when moving between device, performance, control, and software-management options. ASUS describes this as a navigation and organization improvement rather than a new performance mode.
A new Apps tab in Game Library
Game Library now includes an Apps tab, making it easier to find non-game software from Armoury Crate SE. That is useful on a Windows handheld, where the same device may be used for game launchers, utilities, media tools, browsers, and desktop applications.
The change makes Armoury Crate SE a more capable launcher, although it does not turn Windows software into native handheld applications. Desktop programs can still require touch input, a mouse, or keyboard controls depending on their interface.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Media Gallery is removed
ASUS has removed Armoury Crate’s Media Gallery and directs users toward the newer Media experience in Xbox Game Bar. This simplifies Armoury Crate by reducing duplicated media features, but it also changes the workflow for users who previously browsed screenshots and clips inside Armoury Crate.
The ASUS changelog does not provide a complete migration guide or promise feature-for-feature parity. The exact Xbox Game Bar menus can also vary with the Windows build installed on the device, so users should expect to manage captures through Xbox Game Bar rather than look for the old Armoury Crate gallery.

Xbox Gamepad Cursor Mode
ACSE 2.2.6.0 adds support for Xbox Gamepad Cursor Mode on the shared Ally release. It is intended to make desktop-style navigation easier with the handheld’s physical controls, reducing reliance on the touchscreen when opening apps, navigating Windows, or using the device while docked to a television or monitor.
ASUS’s release note confirms the feature but does not specify every button assignment, whether it works in every application, or how it interacts with gamepad input inside games. Those details should be checked on the individual device after installation rather than assumed from the feature name.

The enhanced haptics option is specifically associated with the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X and requires the appropriate MCU versions. It should not be advertised as a feature of the original Ally or 2024 Ally X.
What the November 2025 “major” update changed
The latest shared release should not be confused with the more consequential Armoury Crate SE 2.1.15.0 update from November 18, 2025. That release introduced several Xbox-oriented and performance-management features:
- Default Game Profiles: a preview feature optimized by Xbox that automatically applies profiles to supported titles in battery mode, with the stated goal of balancing frame rate and battery life.
- Full-screen-experience key bindings: shortcuts for entering or exiting the full-screen experience.
- Command Center update notifications: more visible notification support for available updates.
- Radeon Chill integration: AMD Radeon Chill behavior was integrated into the FPS Limiter.
- P-core/E-core controls: these CPU-core controls were exclusive to the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA—not the 2023 ROG Ally or 2024 ROG Ally X.
ASUS’s November 2025 changelog is the appropriate source for those features. They should not be retroactively attributed to ACSE 2.2.6.0.
How to install the update
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update Center.
- Choose Check for Updates.
- Install the Armoury Crate, BIOS, firmware, or driver packages that ASUS presents for your model.
- Keep the handheld connected to its official AC adapter, especially during BIOS or firmware installation.
- Restart when prompted.
- Open Update Center again and check a second time. Additional packages can appear after a prerequisite update or reboot.
Armoury Crate SE can centralize many Ally updates, but the complete update picture still has several layers: Armoury Crate SE, BIOS, MCU firmware where applicable, AMD graphics and chipset drivers, Windows Update, and individual game or launcher updates. These updates do not necessarily arrive together. ASUS documents the Update Center workflow in its support FAQ.

Prepare before BIOS or firmware updates
- Save important work and back up important files.
- Confirm that you can access your BitLocker recovery key before starting a BIOS update.
- Record your current BIOS, Armoury Crate SE, MCU, graphics-driver, and chipset-driver versions.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals if your setup has previously experienced dock or controller problems.
- Do not shut down the device, close the lid, or disconnect power during firmware installation.
These are sensible Windows-handheld precautions, not evidence that ACSE 2.2.6.0 itself causes BitLocker failures. Firmware changes can sometimes lead to recovery-key prompts or boot issues in particular configurations, so preparation is worthwhile.
If the update does not appear
- Check that the Ally is connected to the internet.
- Restart Windows.
- Restart Armoury Crate SE and return to Settings → Update Center.
- Check the installed Armoury Crate SE version against the release being discussed.
- Open the model-specific ASUS support/download page directly.
- Make sure the selected download matches the model family—RC71, RC72, RC73YA, or RC73XA.
- Install BIOS and firmware only when they are intended for the exact device.
Do not cross-flash a BIOS package from an ROG Xbox Ally X onto a 2024 ROG Ally X. If Armoury Crate SE is damaged or refusing to update, use ASUS’s official Armoury Crate SE installer and support route rather than a repackaged third-party installer.
If a firmware update fails, leave the device connected to power and follow ASUS’s model-specific recovery guidance. ASUS Cloud Recovery and other official recovery tools can be useful when necessary, but recovery may erase data, so they are not a first-line substitute for a normal update.
Windows updates are part of the experience
The software experience on an Ally is not controlled by Armoury Crate alone. The devices run Windows and support launchers including Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App, and GOG Galaxy, as described in ASUS’s launcher and Windows support guidance.

ASUS notes that Windows 11 update KB5053656, released March 27, 2025, added support for a Gamepad Layout Keyboard for controller-oriented handheld use. That feature should not be confused with Armoury Crate SE’s Xbox Gamepad Cursor Mode.
Should you install ACSE 2.2.6.0 immediately?
For most owners, yes—once the package appears through Armoury Crate SE’s official Update Center. The Apps tab, reorganized Settings, and cursor mode directly address common Windows-handheld usability issues, and the update keeps the older Ally generation within ASUS’s continuing software-support path.

Consider waiting briefly, or at least preparing more carefully, if:
- the update includes BIOS or MCU firmware rather than only Armoury Crate software;
- the handheld is essential for work, travel, or another time-sensitive use;
- you depend on an external monitor, USB-C dock, custom controller mapping, or unusual peripherals;
- BitLocker is enabled and you have not confirmed access to the recovery key;
- you want to check for model-specific reports before changing firmware.
Waiting in those circumstances is practical risk management, not an ASUS recommendation. If you do update, verify your dock, display, controller mappings, sleep behavior, audio, and favorite games afterward.

What this update does not change
- It does not increase the original Ally’s or Ally X’s hardware specifications.
- It does not turn a standard ROG Ally into a ROG Xbox Ally.
- It does not provide the ROG Xbox Ally X’s P-core/E-core controls to the 2024 ROG Ally X.
- It does not guarantee higher frame rates, lower temperatures, quieter fans, or longer battery life.
- It does not make every Windows application easy to operate with a controller.
Performance and battery behavior can change because of a specific BIOS, AMD driver, Windows update, game profile, FPS-limit setting, or Radeon Chill configuration. Attribute those effects to the specific component and test rather than to Armoury Crate SE as a whole.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the update justify buying new hardware?
Not by itself. ACSE 2.2.6.0 is a reason to keep a functioning RC71 or RC72 updated, not a strong reason to replace one.
An upgrade becomes more rational when the buyer also wants materially better endurance, storage flexibility, ergonomics, connectivity, or a newer Xbox-oriented software and hardware platform. The ROG Ally X (2024) is the direct hardware alternative for original Ally owners who want to remain in the standard Ally ecosystem. The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models are a different generation, not merely an Armoury Crate upgrade.
Before buying, compare the live regional price, warranty, storage, battery, USB-C and dock requirements, and the exact model identifier. A dated ASUS eStore listing showed the ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 when crawled, but that is not a guaranteed September 2026 price or universal regional price.

Verdict
Armoury Crate SE 2.2.6.0 is a meaningful quality-of-life update for the original ROG Ally and 2024 ROG Ally X. Its strongest additions are better Settings navigation, the new Apps tab, and Xbox Gamepad Cursor Mode. Removing Media Gallery is a workflow change that some users will welcome and others will need to adjust to.
The important qualification is model support: enhanced haptics belong to the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally generation, while P-core/E-core controls belong only to the ROG Xbox Ally X. For RC71 and RC72 owners, update through the official channel, prepare properly for any bundled firmware, and expect software polish—not a transformation in hardware-level performance.
