On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, a steam-hauled narrow-gauge train will recreate the atmosphere of Czechoslovakia’s founding as it runs from Jindřichův Hradec to Nová Bystřice and back. The event, Republika přijíždí Úzkokolejkou (“The Republic Arrives by Narrow-Gauge Railway”), combines a scenic ride through Česká Kanada with live scenes of soldiers, civilians, a field kitchen, First Republic fashion and a performer portraying Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Reserve a seat online in advance, then pay the travel fare separately aboard the train.
When and where does the 1918 steam-train event run?
The excursion takes place on the Czech national holiday of 28 October, marking the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918. The 2026 edition commemorates the 108th anniversary. The train uses the historic narrow-gauge line between Jindřichův Hradec and Nová Bystřice, crossing the South Bohemian Česká Kanada landscape and calling at intermediate stations.

How do I reserve a seat and pay for the ticket?
Seat reservations are made online before travel. A reservation holds your place; it is not the travel ticket. The fare is paid separately on board the train, so passengers should budget for both steps and carry a payment method accepted by the operator.

What happens in Nová Bystřice?
The destination program turns the railway excursion into a historical reenactment rather than a simple sightseeing train. More than 100 actors and performers are reported for the 2026 event.
- Actors appear as soldiers returning from the First World War.
- Scenes involve civilians and prisoners of war.
- A field kitchen and period equipment recreate everyday wartime conditions.
- A First Republic fashion show presents clothing associated with the new state.
- A performer portrays Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the leading figure associated with the founding of Czechoslovakia.
The operator describes the concept as taking passengers by steam train into 1918 and placing them at the ceremonial proclamation of Czechoslovakia. It is staged entertainment and historical interpretation, not a literal reconstruction of every event that occurred on 28 October.

Why is 28 October 1918 significant?
On 28 October 1918, the Czechoslovak state was proclaimed as the First World War ended and the Habsburg monarchy collapsed. The date remains a Czech national holiday. The event uses that anniversary as its narrative frame, linking the journey, uniforms, civilian scenes and public ceremony to the uncertainty and optimism surrounding the republic’s birth.
How should visitors plan the day?
- Reserve seats online first. Historic carriages were reported to be filling, and the operator said additional capacity could be added if demand required it.
- Arrive early at Jindřichův Hradec. The outbound departure is 09:50, and boarding a heritage train can take longer than boarding a regular service.
- Keep the fare separate from the reservation. Pay the applicable tariff aboard the train; a booking confirmation alone does not cover the journey.
- Use the Nová Bystřice window deliberately. The scheduled return is 15:35, leaving time for the staged program and a short visit before boarding.
- Allow for heritage-railway variability. Treat the listed return arrival of about 18:05 as an operating estimate rather than a guaranteed connection time.
Could the timetable or train formation change?
Some operational details are time-sensitive. Expats.cz reported that the historic carriages were filling and that operator Gepard Express could add capacity if demand warranted. The same report said both locomotives were scheduled for post-season servicing, including major bearing work. The locomotive known as Krausska was due for a six-year boiler inspection and test in February, while track repairs between Jindřiš and Jindřiš-zastávka were scheduled from 18 November. Those later maintenance plans do not change the published 28 October timetable, but they are a reason to verify final operating information close to departure.

Who is this excursion for?
It suits visitors who want a full-day heritage-railway outing with live interpretation rather than a transport-only journey. Families can use the published family fare, while history enthusiasts may prefer the combination of period equipment, uniforms, fashion and political ceremony. Anyone needing a guaranteed onward connection should allow extra time after the approximately 18:05 return to Jindřichův Hradec.
