Start with Squire and Chemist, then build the prerequisites for the role you want; character level alone does not unlock jobs. This guide covers the standard job tree in The Ivalice Chronicles, not the different lineup in The War of the Lions.
How job unlocks work
Each unit has separate levels for its jobs. Earn JP while working in a job to advance that job’s level; meeting a listed prerequisite makes the target job available to that unit. If a requirement lists several jobs, that unit must meet every listed level. One character’s progress does not unlock a job for another.
You do not need to master every ability in a prerequisite job. The unlock guide specifies job levels, not ability mastery. Abilities learned in one job can also remain usable after changing jobs, as described on Square Enix’s game overview.
All standard job unlock requirements
The following are per-unit requirements for The Ivalice Chronicles, as listed in RPG Site’s job guide, published September 30, 2025.

Plan a route toward the job you want
Physical jobs: Samurai and Ninja
Raise Squire to level 2 to open Knight and Archer. From Knight, level 3 opens Monk; Monk level 4 opens Geomancer. From Archer, level 3 opens Thief; Thief level 4 opens Dragoon. Samurai draws on Knight, Monk, and Dragoon, while Ninja draws on Archer, Thief, and Geomancer, so each advanced job requires investment across two branches.
Magic jobs: Summoner, Orator, and Arithmetician
Chemist level 2 opens Black Mage and White Mage. Black Mage level 3 opens Time Mage, and Time Mage level 3 opens Summoner. White Mage level 3 opens Mystic, and Mystic level 3 opens Orator. Arithmetician requires higher levels in both lines: White Mage 5, Black Mage 5, Time Mage 4, and Mystic 4.

Gender-restricted jobs and Mime
Dancer requires a female unit with Geomancer and Dragoon at level 5. Bard requires a male unit with Summoner and Orator at level 5. Mime has the broadest listed requirement: level 8 in both starting jobs plus level 5 in Summoner, Orator, Geomancer, and Dragoon. Track these thresholds on one character; progress cannot be combined across your roster.
Unique character jobs are a separate system
Story characters have exclusive jobs that are not unlocked by meeting the generic tree’s JP requirements. They become available as characters join or progress through the story. RPG Site’s guide lists Ramza’s Squire progression and unique jobs associated with Agrias, Mustadio, Rapha, Marach, Meliadoul, Orlandeau, Beowulf, Reis, and Cloud. Those classes are not additional generic-job prerequisites.

Which jobs are included in this edition?
Some guides mix The Ivalice Chronicles with Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. RPG Site identifies Dark Knight and Onion Knight as War of the Lions exclusives, so they are not included in this edition’s standard unlock table. A separate guide published by Position Is Everything on May 20, 2026 gives conflicting claims about those jobs; use an edition-specific guide when following requirements.
Square Enix describes The Ivalice Chronicles as having “over 20 jobs,” rather than publishing a precise count in its 2025 announcement. Avoid treating counts from guides that may combine editions as definitive.
