Planet Zoo 2 has six named Wildlife Reserves at launch, but not every zoo animal can be sent to one. The launch-edition Zoopedia, checked on 19 October 2026, lists 136 animals: 58 have at least one named reserve, 46 have release-group information without a reserve assignment, and 32 have no release information. Wildlife Reserves are restored natural areas that you populate with eligible zoo animals, then manage through ecosystems, biodiversity and field research. The game launched on 13 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What are Wildlife Reserves in Planet Zoo 2?
Wildlife Reserves are large conservation areas outside the main zoo. You restore habitat, establish ecosystems, build a research network and release eligible animals raised in your zoos. The animal’s Conservation entry shows its release-group options and, where applicable, the reserves it can enter.

Frontier describes the system as taking conservation beyond the zoo: released animals return to natural habitats, while reserve research earns Conservation Credits and raises species-research levels that benefit your zoo.
Which Wildlife Reserves are available?
The current launch-edition Zoopedia names six reserves. Species assignments overlap, so the totals below are not unique-animal counts.

Can every Planet Zoo 2 animal be released?
No. Reserve eligibility, a release group and release information are separate things in the Zoopedia.
Animals with a release group but no named reserve
These 46 species can show one or more release-group types, yet their current entries name no Wildlife Reserve, so they cannot currently be sent to a named reserve:

Animals with no release information
Thirty-two species show neither a reserve assignment nor a release-group type in the checked entries. This category comprises the 30 exhibit animals plus Bactrian Camel and Koi.
What release-group types does each species use?
The permitted group type is species-specific. A species can list more than one type, so the figures below overlap and do not add up to the number of species with release groups.
| Release-group type | Species listing the type |
|---|---|
| Mixed Group | 64 |
| Solitary Male | 49 |
| Female Bachelor Herd | 36 |
| Breeding Partners | 30 |
| Solitary Female | 18 |
| Male Bachelor Herd | 16 |
The game displays the exact group composition and welfare or genetic thresholds for your selected species. The published launch information does not provide universal group sizes, so use the requirements shown in the current release-group screen.
How do I release an animal into a Wildlife Reserve?
Release is a multi-stage process. Research, animal quality, group composition and habitat readiness all have to line up before the final release.

- Research the species. Use zoo vets; additional research can unlock release-group options.
- Accept conservation projects. Complete the project requirements associated with the release.
- Move candidates to Animal Storage. Animals must be available there when you build the group.
- Create a release group. Choose a permitted type for the species.
- Add qualifying animals. The interface can require specific longevity, fertility and genetic-diversity values.
- Finalise the group. Finalisation cannot be undone, and the animals enter acclimatisation.
- Choose the destination. Select Release to Wildlife Reserve or Quick Release for Conservation Credits.
- Build a Research Outpost. This provides the base for reserve research and the Research Vehicle.
- Paint an ecosystem. Set its area and terrain, then satisfy any water, highland or lowland requirements until the ecosystem is Established.
- Remove pollution. A polluted ecosystem cannot support a healthy reserve rating.
- Remove invasive flora. Clear plants that are not native to that reserve.
- Release the group. The selected animals can enter only an established ecosystem.
- Complete ecosystem roles. Release groups may require functions such as rooting, browsing or hunting; filling every required role can make the ecosystem Flourishing.
- Build the Research Network. Use Observation Platforms, Acoustic Monitors and Camera Traps.
- Conduct field research. Drive the Research Vehicle or walk through the reserve and photograph animal behaviour without disturbing the animals.
How do ecosystems and biodiversity work?
Every reserve has ecosystems suited to its geography. A new ecosystem starts as Invalid; it becomes Established only after its area, terrain, nature and special requirements are met. Some release groups need a Flourishing ecosystem, which means all of that ecosystem’s required roles are filled.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The reserve’s Biodiversity Rating has two parts: an Ecosystem Rating and a Research Rating. Established or flourishing ecosystems, varied species and clean native vegetation improve the ecosystem side. Pollution and invasive flora reduce it. Observation Platforms, Acoustic Monitors and Camera Traps improve the research side.

Many marine and reef animals are different: sharks, rays, Hawksbill Turtle and West Indian Manatee currently have release-group information but no named reserve assignment.
What do reserve research and Conservation Credits provide?
Research activity in a reserve pays Conservation Credits and raises species-research levels. Those higher research levels feed back into zoo play, making the reserve a progression system rather than a one-time animal disposal option. A Research Outpost is the infrastructure hub for the Research Vehicle, while the wider network of observation and monitoring equipment increases the Research Rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are reserve assignments exclusive to one Wildlife Reserve?
No. Several species appear in multiple reserve lists, which is why the six reserve totals overlap. Choose the destination shown for the particular animal and release group rather than assuming a species has only one possible habitat.
Can I send a shark or ray to a named reserve?
The current launch entries do not assign sharks or rays to a Wildlife Reserve. Several of them still have release-group types, so they may be eligible for other release mechanics without being valid destinations for the six named reserves.
Will animals without release information become eligible later?
The launch data does not promise future eligibility or additional reserve assignments. Treat the Zoopedia’s current Conservation entry as authoritative for your game version and check it after updates.

Quick Release awards Conservation Credits without placing the animal in a managed reserve ecosystem. A reserve release instead uses acclimatisation, habitat requirements and the Research Network, and contributes to reserve biodiversity and research progression.
