All Star Tower Defense beginner’s guide: currencies, units, and game modes

All Star Tower Defense (OG ASTD) is a Roblox tower-defense game built around a simple loop: summon units, place them against enemy waves, and spend battle-earned Cash on upgrades. The official listing sums it up as: “Use your units to fend off waves of enemies.” Your first priorities are to confirm that you entered the original experience, assemble a six-unit team with complementary jobs, learn what each currency buys, and use Story Mode before tackling endurance-focused content.

This guide covers the original [OG] All Star Tower Defense experience by Top Down Games, not the separate All Star Tower Defense X. Names, banners, shops, event currencies, and available modes can change, so treat live lobby and in-game displays as the final authority.

What you do in All Star Tower Defense

Every battle follows the same broad pattern. You bring a roster into a stage, deploy units where they can attack the route, survive successive enemy waves, and upgrade those units as the battle economy grows. Units have different abilities, and upgrades can unlock new attacks or improve existing ones. Outside a battle, the Summon Gate is how you expand the roster.

The official game description highlights cooperative Story Mode and an infinity tower. A community-maintained wiki also uses the labels Regular Infinite, Progressive Modes, Category Raids, and Gauntlet. Those additional names are community terminology rather than a complete, permanent official mode list; open the current lobby to see which modes, maps, restrictions, and rewards are available on your server.

Confirm that you are playing the original experience

Search results can show more than one game with a similar name. The original experience and All Star Tower Defense X are separate Roblox games with separate systems. The most visible practical difference in the supplied official descriptions is the Summon Gate rotation: the original listing says new items appear in the Summon Gate and Emote Shop every hour, while the All Star Tower Defense X listing says its Summon Gate refreshes every 30 minutes.

How to use this guide Follow the systems and terminology below Do not assume the same currencies, banners, units, or modes apply

Check the experience title and developer before spending Gems or planning around a banner timer. If the lobby’s labels differ from this guide, trust the live game rather than trying to force the two experiences into one ruleset.

Your first battle: a practical starting sequence

  1. Enter the correct lobby. Read the full experience title and confirm that it is the original game. Look at the update board for current notices, codes, or event information; the official listing directs players there and to the developer’s social links.
  2. Inspect the Summon Gate. The gate is the source of additional units. Before spending a currency, read the currently displayed banner, cost, featured pool, and any rules shown in the interface. Banner costs and rewards are not permanent.
  3. Build a usable six-unit roster. Start with complementary functions rather than six units that all perform the same job. A beginner-friendly structure is a leader, main damage dealer, economy unit, buffer, and two support or utility choices.
  4. Enter Story Mode first. Story stages provide a controlled place to learn deployment ranges, attack timing, enemy routes, and upgrade menus. If the lobby offers matchmaking or a team option, cooperative Story Mode is also an official part of the game’s described loop.
  5. Deploy before the first wave reaches your base. Place your opening damage or control unit where its range covers the route. The exact button labels can change with interface updates, so follow the current deployment prompt rather than an old video.
  6. Watch the battle economy. Cash is the currency used to upgrade units during a battle. Decide whether the next purchase should strengthen your main attacker, add coverage, or improve income; do not spend every point on one unit if another lane is exposed.
  7. Upgrade with a purpose. Open a unit’s upgrade panel and read what the next level changes. Prioritize upgrades that add an attack, extend useful range, improve area coverage, or solve the current wave’s problem.
  8. Review the result. After the stage, note which lane leaked, which unit carried damage, and whether you ran short of Cash. Use that observation to change one roster slot or deployment position before repeating the stage.

How to build a beginner six-unit team

A fan-maintained All Star Tower Defense guide recommends thinking in roles. This is a planning heuristic, not an official balance ranking, and no single six-unit lineup is guaranteed to be best after every update or in every mode. Named “best unit” lists are especially unreliable when a banner, stage rule, or balance patch changes.

Leader

Choose a leader whose effect helps the rest of your squad. A leader slot is most useful when its bonus matches the way your team actually deals damage or survives waves. Read the leader description in the current unit interface; do not assume a bonus applies to every unit or every mode.

Main damage dealer

This is the unit you expect to carry ordinary wave clearing. Give it enough room and Cash to reach the upgrades that define its attack pattern. A high displayed damage number is not automatically better if the unit has unsuitable range, attack timing, placement limits, or a cost your opening economy cannot support.

Economy unit

An economy unit helps you generate or preserve the resources needed for later upgrades. Its value is indirect: an early investment can be worthwhile if it lets the rest of the roster reach important upgrades sooner. Test the timing in Story Mode and avoid delaying all early defense for an income plan that cannot survive the opening waves.

Buffer

A buffer improves another unit or group through a temporary or persistent effect, depending on its current description. Place it so the intended attackers receive the benefit, and check whether the effect has a range, target type, duration, or activation condition.

Slow or control support

Slowing enemies or otherwise controlling their movement buys your damage units more attack opportunities. Control is often most useful at bends, chokepoints, or near a unit whose range covers the affected route. Verify the current stage and enemy rules before assuming a control effect works on every target.

Second support slot

Use the final slot to cover the weakness revealed by the mode: additional damage, another utility effect, broader range, or a specialist required by a stage. A flexible support slot is safer for a new player than copying a fixed tier-list lineup without understanding why each unit is present.

ASTD currencies explained

A community currency guide lists six currencies. Their exact costs, rewards, banner rules, and event uses can rotate, so inspect the current Summon Gate, shop, and event panels before committing resources.

Currency Reported purpose What to verify in the live game
Gems Hero Summon pulls Current banner cost, featured pool, and any pull rules
Gold Secondary Hero Summon currency Whether the desired summon is currently available and its price
Stardust Special Summon and Dual Starhunt banners Banner availability, requirements, and rotation schedule
Cash Upgrading units during a battle How much the current stage awards and how upgrade prices scale
Tokens Lobby purchases and shops Which shop or event is open and what items are currently stocked
Candy Emote Shop and event-related purchases Whether an event shop is active and when its inventory changes

Gems, Gold, and Stardust: summon currencies

These currencies are spent outside combat on different summon systems. The names alone do not tell you which banner is best: a banner can have a different pool, cost, or availability from the one shown in an older guide. Open the current gate, compare the displayed options, and save currency for a banner that contains a role your roster lacks rather than summoning simply because a timer is ending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash: the battle-only budget

The currency guide describes Cash as being earned during waves and resetting when the battle ends. That makes Cash a tactical resource, not a permanent account balance. If a stage ends, unused Cash does not become Gems, Gold, or Stardust. During a run, spend it on the upgrade or deployment that addresses the next threat instead of treating the largest possible number as a goal.

Tokens and Candy: lobby and event spending

Tokens and Candy are associated with lobby purchases, emotes, and event-related shops in the community guide. Event rules can rotate or disappear. Before farming either currency, confirm that the relevant shop is open and that the item you want is still listed; an old event guide may describe a shop that is no longer active.

Choosing a game mode

Use the official mode names first, then treat broader community labels as optional descriptions. The official Roblox listing names Story Mode and the infinity tower. The community wiki additionally lists Regular Infinite, Progressive Modes, Category Raids, and Gauntlet. The lobby’s current mode panel determines which of these labels are available and what their rules mean now.

Mode or label Best initial question What is established What you must check in-game
Story Mode Am I learning maps and progressing through stages? Officially named; supports the game’s wave-defense loop and cooperative play Stage order, map requirements, matchmaking, and displayed rewards
Infinity tower How long can my team endure escalating waves? Officially named as part of the game Entry rules, wave scaling, session length, and rewards
Regular Infinite Do I want repeatable endurance play? Listed by the community wiki Whether it is currently open and how its rules differ from the infinity tower
Progressive Modes Does this run change difficulty or objectives over time? Community-listed label Progression conditions, restrictions, and payout shown in the lobby
Category Raids Does the stage restrict unit categories? Community-listed label Allowed categories, recommended roles, and entry requirements
Gauntlet Is this a challenge sequence rather than ordinary story progression? Community-listed label Stage sequence, failure rules, and current rewards

Start with Story Mode

Story Mode is the clearest place to learn the controls and discover whether your six-unit structure works. Use it to practice opening placements, identify when an economy unit can be afforded, and learn which upgrades solve a wave. Cooperative play can also expose you to positioning ideas without requiring you to master every map immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move to endurance content when your opening is stable

The infinity tower and community-labeled Infinite modes are appropriate when you want longer runs and a test of sustained scaling. Do not call one mode the universal “best farm”: the available official material does not provide a complete reward table, and payouts or restrictions can change. Compare the reward panel, expected session length, and team requirements shown before entering.

Use restricted modes as team-building tests

Category Raids, Progressive Modes, and Gauntlet may ask for a different roster or sequence of decisions. Because their exact restrictions are not documented in the official listing, read the lobby description first. Swap the flexible support slot, then reconsider your leader and economy timing rather than replacing every unit blindly.

Battle decisions that matter most

Cover the first leak before chasing a perfect build

A stage is lost when enemies reach the end, not when your roster lacks every possible upgrade. Put an affordable attacker on the route, then add economy or support once the opening is secure. If one lane fails, strengthen that lane before investing in a distant unit that cannot affect the immediate threat.

Spend upgrades according to the wave problem

Read the upgrade text and match it to the battlefield. More range can cover a longer section of road; an additional attack can solve a dense wave; control can buy time; and a damage increase can finish targets that currently survive with a sliver of health. The useful choice depends on the map and enemies in front of you.

Keep the team’s roles complementary

Six damage units can look powerful in a menu while leaving you unable to fund them, control a fast enemy, or benefit from a leader effect. Conversely, too many support units may leave ordinary waves alive. After each run, change one role or one placement so you can identify what improved the result.

A simple progression plan for new players

  1. Learn one Story stage. Identify the route, safe opening positions, and the first upgrade that prevents leaks.
  2. Stabilize your six roles. Keep a leader, damage source, economy option, buffer, control option, and flexible support until the stage teaches you that one role is unnecessary.
  3. Spend summon currency deliberately. Read the live banner and target a missing role instead of following an undated tier list.
  4. Repeat with one improvement. Test a different opening order, placement, or upgrade timing, not an entirely new plan every run.
  5. Try cooperative Story Mode. Use the additional perspective to learn positioning and role coverage.
  6. Enter endurance or restricted modes only after checking their panels. Confirm availability, rules, restrictions, expected length, and displayed rewards in the current lobby.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

  • Launching the wrong game: compare the experience title and rotation timer before spending anything.
  • Using a copied “best team”: replace at least one slot when your mode, banner access, or balance version differs from the guide that named it.
  • Ignoring economy: if later waves are impossible because upgrades arrive too late, test an economy unit or a cheaper opening before adding another expensive attacker.
  • Over-investing in one unit: if another lane leaks, buy coverage or control before taking a marginal upgrade on an already-safe lane.
  • Assuming event currency is permanent: check that the Token or Candy shop is open and verify its current inventory.
  • Treating community labels as official specifications: read the live mode description for restrictions and rewards; names such as Gauntlet or Category Raids do not establish their current rules by themselves.
  • Relying on old codes or pity advice: the currency guide’s detailed thresholds, code examples, farming claims, and expiry dates are time-sensitive and should be checked against current official notices or the in-game interface.

What can change after an update

The official Roblox listing consulted for this guide was displayed as updated October 8, 2026. The community currency and mode pages are secondary resources and can lag behind live changes. Recheck the following whenever you return after a patch:

  • Summon Gate and Emote Shop rotation timing and contents
  • Gems, Gold, Stardust, Token, and Candy costs or earning rules
  • Unit abilities, upgrade effects, placement limits, and balance changes
  • Story, infinity, Infinite, Progressive, Category Raid, and Gauntlet availability
  • Mode restrictions, rewards, event end dates, and lobby requirements

For updates and codes, use the in-game update board or the developer links referenced by the official listing. No physical accessory, replacement component, or paid product is required by the documented beginner loop; progression is built around Roblox gameplay and its in-game systems.

Sources and evidence boundaries

The core loop, Story Mode, infinity tower, and hourly original-game rotation statement come from the official Roblox listing for [OG] All Star Tower Defense by Top Down Games. The six-unit role framework and the broader mode labels come from a fan-maintained All Star Tower Defense Wiki, which is not an official developer balance guide. Its currency page supplies the six currency names and reported purposes, but detailed thresholds, rates, codes, and event behavior should be treated as volatile community information.
